— My Alphabe-Thursday (2nd), the letter "L" / Thursday Two Questions —

n.
New Zealand and Australia; more of our most recent cruise pictures
Here we have some pictures to honor Alphabe-Thursday letter "L"

"L" is for Laugh.  Today I have some pictures from our recent stay in Sydney that may make you laugh.  At the least, I do hope they will make you SMILE.

We stayed in Sydney three and a half days and three nights after our New Zealand Australia cruise on the Diamond Princess.

This giant rubber duckie made me laugh a little, Mrs. Jim is smiling.  Sitting in Sydney Harbor, it is a piece of art commissioned for the Sydney Festival.  It was created by Dutch artist Florentijn Hofman [Zap2it Blog for more].  We enjoyed the Festival activities all over town.   Saturday night we went to a concert in the park.

On Sunday we walked down to the Market City (link) on Hay Street.  It has Haymarket and Chinatown, both to add to the sense of being in a large city market.

Here is Mrs. Jim on the draw bridge when we walked back from the Nautical Museum.  The fellow in the background wearing a yellow vest is a part of the Park Guide force.  I had asked him a question about the yellow duck anchored below.

Nothing to exciting about the lollipop tree but I smiled.  It was a part of the souvenir shops located on the bank row of shops along the Harbor.  We did buy a plush kangaroo.

We had a pleasant ferry ride (Sidney Ferries) around the Harbor on the Inner Harbour Ferry.  It left the Circular Quay and sailed over to the Australian National Maritime Museum.  I liked going under the Harbour Bridge.  You can see the Sydney Opera House in the background.

We rode the train over and back across the bridge, we took took the ferry to Manly Beach for a morning, we rode the tram to the Harbor Fish Market, and took the bus to Bondi Beach for our major rides.  There were many more as Sydney has a wonderful public transportation system.  Since Mrs. Jim and I were seniors our all day tickets to all modes were $2.50 AUS each day.

Riding with the pedaling fellow in this bike mobile looks like it would be fun but he didn't have many takers.  Mrs. Jim and I did ride in one of these in China and the ride was not fun.

The street painter was going to donate his painting to a local Salvation Army unit.  There were a lot of people in his painting but I couldn't figure out what he meant it to be.

These two pictures I took at Manly Beach.  Kids, perhaps a very small adult, could enter an OZBOBBLE to jump and roll around.  It didn't look like fun to me.  It cost $10 but I don't know how long a person could stay for that ten.

We didn't see a Water Dragon at the beach.  Thank goodness, it could bite.  They are Australia's largest lizard, the females grow to be a couple of feet long while the males grow to three feet long.

When was the last time you saw a Woolworth's Store?   We haven't had them in the U.S. for years and years.  This one had merchandise similar to what our Target Super Store would carry.

The plate?  That is my last breakfast aboard the Diamond Princess.  The porters had taken our luggage and all we could do was to wait for our turn to disembark.  This was a good breakfast I got in the buffet.  It had English and American bacon, one egg broken yolk over hard, one small pancake (under the egg), sausage links, a pineapple wedge, and some canned peaches.

That breakfast held me until after our Sydney Opera House tour that started at 1:30 p.m.  We had already checked into our hotel and then caught the free shopping bus back down to the Harbor.

Now for my Thursday Two Questions.

My last post last week was about a "K" word, Kangaroo.
My Two Questions for this week (you can answer just one if you wish):.

1. Do you ever laugh at things that make you smile?  What was the last thing you smiled about or laughed at?

2. What does your community have for mass public transportation?.
I wish the Houston Metropolitan had decent public transportation.  If yours does you should feel lucky.

Bonus Question: What is your favorite "L" word?

— My Alphabe-Thursday, "Z" Cars I Have Known — "Z" Two Questions

.
Posted in respect for Aphabe- Thursday's Letter "Z"

The Letter "Z" is the last letter of our English alphabet.  Strangely enough, the English do not use this letter very often.   I refer to you our English (American)  "Z".  (Google Search for "use of letter Z in british english" )

I would have picked "Z" for Zebra but I did not have a picture of one on file.  And I wasn't about to run down the 65 miles to the Houston Zoo for one.  I did try one toy store and found no toy Zebra there.

So I picked "Z" for "Z" Cars instead.  I just happened to have had a couple of blogs written about the two here.

First, above, is a BMW "Z4" Car.  The Z4 was introduced in 2002 and is still in production with an improved model. (Google Search for "BMW Z4") (Jim's 2008 blog featuring this car) BTW, this "Z" is owned by a lady friend of ours.  For this picture it is sitting in our church parking lot.

Second, to the left on my NAPA calendar, is a 1968 Chevrolet "Z"-28 Camero.  My son had a 1968 Camero painted blue and white like this in high school.  His was an "RS" Camero. (Jim's 2010 blog featuring this car)

Now for my Thursday Two Questions.

I really enjoyed your responses to my Yellow Car post of last week.  I did have a couple of Yellow Toy Cars that I did not post about.
My Two Questions for this week (you can answer just one if you wish):
..er

1. If your older relative willed you his one of his Z Cars like these above, would you want the newer BMW or the older Chevy, which would you want?  Why that one? I
It would be a toss-up for me.  I think neither car is very desirable for my wants.
. aell
2. Do you have or would you like to have a collector car?  What might it be?
I have a 1950 Ford Tudor and a 1974 Ford Mustang II Ghia. My 1998 Ford Mustang GT convertible has a few years to go before it will be a collector car.
Bonus Question: What is your favorite "Z" word?  Or "Z" Car?.

My Thursday Two Questions post is for Amanda.

— My Alphabe-Thursday, Yellow Cars I Have Known — "Y" — Two Questions —

.
Posted in respect for Aphabe- Thursday's Letter "Y"

"Y" is for the Yellow Cars I have known.  Posted here are a few.  You can click on any of the pictures to see a larger size view.

Above left, is a toy car belonging to KP's friend who is three years old.  It is one of his favorites.  On the right, with Mrs. Jim 'driving', is a toy car at the Peppa Pigland Park near Southampton, U.K. where we visited while on a British holiday the last three weeks.  Did you note that the other two passengers, KP and me (JIM), are hanging on tightly?

Now we see the railroad Yellow car, again transporting KP and Mrs. Jim.  Then there is the Peppa Pig Yellow Bus showing off at Peppa Pigland.

I know, this car is not a Yellow Car.  It is brown.  What makes interesting is that the car is the M&M car at the super interesting M&M Store in London, U.K.  We could only wish that one of these M&M characters would have been Yellow.  The bike, it is sort of Yellow but definitely not a car.

Again, a not so Yellow Car.  But it is a car.  And for those of you who like reflections, 'eat your heart out.'  The next picture you may have seen.  This one was in a London newspaper lamenting the flooding of all these Yellow Cars in Hurricane Sandy flooded New York.

Just thought you'd like to see a Volkswagen Sharan car.  I had never seen one before here but this one is running around on the London streets.  Also it does have a Yellow license plate.  The spotted Yellow animal here is probably a giant Yellow Car Cat.  At any rate KP liked to ride in it even if nobody donated a coin to make it gyrate.

This vehicle is another Yellow Bus (Car) that shuttles people to and from the parking lot and airport terminals. This company has coupons to lower their rates to below the competitors. It also might be the one that has covered parking.

The vehicle below is a Yellow service Car for the railroad.  They used to be hand cars but this one is too large for that and has an engine.

I found it at one of the the Cinque Terre, a region composed of five villages on the Italian Riviera.   It appears to have been 'out of service' for quite a while.

— My Alphabe-Thursday, Xenogamy — "X" — Things in a Row — Two Questions —

.
Posted in respect for Aphabe- Thursday's Letter "X"

Question: What do you get when you cross a sunflower with a moonbeam?

Answer: A very short yellow sunbeam  sunset.

"X" is for Xenogamy. Xenogamy defined: "The term xenogamy (along with geitonogamy & autogamy) was first suggested by Kerner in 1876.[2] Cross-pollination involves the transfer of pollen grains from the flower of one plant to the stigma of the flower of another plant. It is also called Xenogamy (Gk.xenos=strange, gamos=marriage)." [from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xenogamy

KP and BP's other grandfather John (BIL Billy's father) develops his own variety of hybrid roses by using selective cross pollination.  Some he has patented.  All of his roses in his garden are beautiful.

My Sunset picture:  It was a pretty sunset over the lake with pink sky and red sun. But my camera (a Sony Cyber-shot DSC W560) red eye fixer 'fixed it'. There was such a pretty red sun that should have been in the middle of this picture when I took it from inside our friend's house at her breakfast room table.

Pumpkin Things in a Row I found at the Waitrose Supermarket, Finchley Road, London.  Mrs. Jim bought one of the small pumpkins for £.99 to make the jack-o-lantern in the picture below.  We have been using it as a center piece on the dining table now for a week.

The middle picture was the candy row dedicated to Halloween and the one on the right was a fireworks for sale display shelf.  I haven't heard many fireworks on Halloween night.  I think they are more for Guy Fawkes Day celebrating.  [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guy_Fawkes_Night]

This is supposed to be for a November 5 holiday but friends have invited us to celebrate with their bonfire Saturday night.  There might be fireworks then too.

Here are KP and BP helping with more of my birthday celebrating.  This was after trick or treating was finished.  KP got a lot of candy from the kind neighbors who love for the children to come.  For us after our children left the roost our favorite Halloween thing to do was to see the costumes and to watch them ask for and give a thank you for the candy they got from us.

KP helped Mrs. Jim make and frost this cake.  There were no birthday candles in Karen's flat so KP and I decided we could do a little make believe using this pink highlighter marker.  You should have seen it being lit and them watching me to blow out the candle.  It all worked very well.

See more of my birthday celebrating here.

Trivia:  The favorite candy folks like to give out is Tootsie Roll candies.  The most unliked candy the kids get is Tootsie Roll candies.

— My Alphabe-Thursday, Wagons and White — "W" — Things in a Row — Two Questions —

.
Jim sitting in an old Wagon
Posted in respect for Aphabe- Thursday's Letter "W"

"W" is for Wagon.  This picture of me sitting in the old Radio Flyer (I think that is what it is) has been my Blogger profile picture for quite a while now.  There were a few others earlier but this one I like and so I will keep it. I still have me with the old Ford in the Canadian Yukon Territory for my facebook picture though.

The picture was taken at the The Antique Rose Emporium at Brenham, Texas.  It is one of many wagons there to be used by customer to haul their plant selections up to the registers for check out.

Next we have "W" is for White showing in some of my pictures that you have not seen yet.  This display is down the street from our house.  I like the White rocks lining the flower bed.  This month the bed is decorated for Halloween.

Make any picture larger by clicking on it.

On the left is another house, White, down the street from us.  They do not have any grass in the front yard, only these plants.  Most are flowering plants and many are wild flowers.

On the right are two White bags of golf balls that our son, Mike, gave us.  He finds a lot of these while playing.  They are balls that others have lost.  Also some are balls that he no longer plays with as he has hit them too many times.

The White truck above makes grocery store deliveries on Karen and Billy's street.  The delivery charges are very reasonable.  And then our White dog, Katrin, has had a shampoo, nail job, and a haircut at the groomers.  Can you see the Halloween decorations on the ear ribbons?  She has been "outside" and now is wanting in.

In the White sack are Adi's ashes back from the crematorium.  The White angel beside the bag has made some rounds.  It once helped remind our dying friend, Katrin's 'mother', that the Lord had angels watching over her bed.
The White sign is at a local golf course.  I did not see any snakes but did see a couple of alligators over there.

We saw the lady walking with the White flowered basket on her head walking alongside the highway in Guatemala.  I don't have the slightest idea who she was, where she came from, or where she was going.

Below is our granddaughter, KP, helping us to find the Bloomsberry Central Baptist Church in London this Sunday.  She had the map (White) and was really a big help.

I really enjoyed your responses to my Velocipede post of last week

My Two Questions for this week (you can answer just one if you wish):

— My Alphabe-Thursday, Velocipede and Vehicles — "V" — Things in a Row — Two Questions —

.
"V" is for Velocipede and for Vehicle
in respect for Alphebe- Thursday

This Vehicle is a nice Chevy truck that Karen (a neighbor) takes us to the airport in.  It is holiday decorated for Halloween.  Lots of ghosts, goblins, pumpkins, jack-o-lanterns, and cobwebs inside too.  We left Tuesday for London, U.K.

In this picture you cannot see the velocipede as it is under some of my garage 'stuff.' I think it is next to the two old green Raleigh bicycles (also velocipedes) but I couldn't see it and I don't think you can either.

The major vehicle in this picture is my black 1950 Ford Tudor Deluxe Custom. This car has 102 K miles on it but back with the 50's models anything over 100 thousand is gravy.

Dad always retired his cars when they hit 100 K. Then when Lois (my sister [link]) or I needed a car Dad would give us his old one. I was first with his 1951 Ford Deluxe Tudor.

This was during my Army days and I had worn out my 1950 Jimmy Dean Mercury Tudor. That old Mercury had served me well. One time in the middle of the night coming through New Mexico back home to El Paso the generator bracket broke.

This was a time when our twins, then babies, Mike and Mitch, were with us (of course). We would coast down hills and drive up using the engine power. We were taking U.S. Highway 54 and some of those hills were little mountains. Since the water pumps and the cooling fan were inoperative I knew that we could not make it back to El Paso.

I have looked and looked on the maps and can not figure out for sure which town we stopped at. The train station master (??) let us come inside by his fire to keep warm that night. The next morning was Saturday and the repair facility was closed. Even if he was open there would not have been a new bracket in town for us. But a kindly welder welded the bracket back together again for us with no charge.

People are generally nice to soldiers, because they are terribly underpaid and most all of the enlisted men are very poor. We were so poor that on a Private First Class pay having two kids we PAID NO INCOME TAX. Governor Romney would have written us off as not voting for him for sure, being one of the '47 per centers'.

At any rate my '50 Ford will be a fine ride for our Montgomery Country Early Ford V8 Club rides when, if ever, I get it back on the road. Mostly now it needs tires but also a few other fixes would make it better.

The velocipede? It is a nice pretty one, all pink with white seats, handlebars, and wheels. It was our Karen's when she was small.

Well, we will dig it out for KP (her latest pictures) to ride. She might be big enough to ride it this December when she comes from London for her Christmas visit to Mimi and Papa.  BTW, do you think my garage is messy?

Oh yes, a velocipede here, on this post, is another name for a tricycle.  Actually according to Wikipedia the word velocipede means any human powered vehicle with one or more wheels.

— My Alphabe-Thursday, Three Umbrellas — "U" — Things in a Row — Two Questions —

.
Three Umbrellas
in respect for Aphabe- Thursday.

"U" is for Umbrella.  Here we have three.

First is our KP with here 'rainy day protector.'  She is so happy with it mainly because she likes Mickey and Minnie Mouse.

No one told her that it is bad luck to open an umbrella in the house.  But both in London and in Houston we always carry our umbrellas because we never know when the weather will turn to rain.

Next are two of mine.  The top one in the picture obviously came from Bloomingdales but I did not buy it there.  Like many of our umbrellas it just showed up in my collection.  It is quite old judged by the mechanism being non-push button.

The lower one, still in the store casing, is to replace it.  I purchased one like it at our local Academy store but it only lasted one rainstorm.  Then it came apart just like it's predecessor from Bloomingdales did.

I took it back to the store wanting a replacement.  I did not have my receipt but there was a warning on the package of the one in the store that these carried a 'lifetime' warranty.

Sure enough, they did replace it without a receipt.  Please note that I did save the receipt for this one, "just in case."

- - - - - -

Here are some wild persimmons (Google Link) that I found on my walk this morning.  I was pleasantly surprised to find them.

They were not laying in rows like in this picture, I did that for my "Thursday Things in a Row" post for pat.  You can go here for more "Row" posts by other bloggers.

And this then, is the tree they were growing on.

— My Alphabe-Thursday — "T" —

.

"T" is for tires.   Seems that two guys, old or young, get together by a special car the "kick some tires like the fellows above."  This car has white tires that I didn't know even exist.  I doubt if it should be driven in Georgia where the dirt is red.  Who would want to be accused of driving a 'red neck' car with dirty red tires.

"T" is also for a Model T Ford.  This one is a runabout roadster.  Most of these 1923 to 1927 Fords have been torn apart and made into a "Model T bucket hot rods" (Pictures)

This one belongs to my friend John.  I don't know what year it is but you will see John and his wife driving it all over town.  Fast in this car is 30 mph which John calls going 35 mph.
