Flashback Friday # 6 ~ Medical Memories

We are still in London with Karen and family after our Baltic cruise. Today is KP's first birthday. Tomorrow I will post about her celebration.

These PJs are Lady Bug PJs. There is a large lady bug on her shirt but her hand is covering it up.

KP is just ready to start walking.

Yesterday we took the Metro into downtown London to get her a push chair (stroller for U.S. people). She loves riding the rails. Notice how nicely she hangs onto the pole. Like a native Londoner.

Her push chair glows in the dark and shines in the headlight beams of cars. That was a surprise to me. I discovered from this picture as it shined in the flash as well as headlights.

After Karen came home from work the three of them went for a walk in the park and had a bite to eat. There is a neat little gelato shop down the street. KP had her share coming home. She acquired the taste of ice cream quickly, it was already in her genes from Mrs. Jim and me.

Now Flashback Friday:
Linda's orders are:

.
Were you prone to accidents and injuries when you were growing up? Did you ever break a bone? Knock out any teeth? Get stitches? Have you ever ridden in the back of an ambulance? Did you ever have surgery or spend any time in a hospital? How did your folks treat injuries and illnesses? With lots of TLC or by telling you to get a stiff upper lip? Was there a particular home remedy that your mom (or dad or whoever!) used or any "traditions" involving injuries or illnesses? What's the worst injury (or illness) you had when you were growing up?

1. Got to tell about the time Bess (one of our work horses) kicked me. I was about 12 or 13 and Dad had sent me to the pasture to bring up the horses. That would be Bell, Bess, and Minnie. Minnie was our riding horse, I rode her to high school for my first two years.

Bess didn't want to come up and so I got me a stick to whack her good with. I was holding the stick behind my back so that she wouldn't see it until I sprang. Bess didn't like me coming towards me that way. She whirled and kicked me silly.

My back hurt something awful but I made it the quarter mile or so back to the farm yard. The folks must have taken me to the doctor but I don't remember doing that. All I remember was laying on my back for about a week until it got some better.

2. Next I should tell about the time I got the chicken pox. I was at a hotel in Lincoln, Nebraska, attending an FFA convention. My specialty was judging weed seeds. I did get to judge and am thinking I did pretty good.

The problem was that all the boys from our school caught the chicken pox from me. I think my sister, Lois, did too, and maybe Dad.

It could have been the mumps. Lois will probably e-mail me to let me know. She checks THIS BLOG every day but very seldom leaves a comment. Several of my cousins also read it.

[Lois did straighten me out. She left this in her comment (# 2):
Think it was the measles you brought home to me. Dad brought home the mumps to all of us. You stayed awake to see them take out your tonsils, but you told me I should let them put me out when I got mine out a month later. And I'm thinking you got ringworm from our baby calves.]

3. When I was sixteen I had my tonsils taken out in the hospital as an outpatient. The doctor did not take out my adenoids because I only had a local and was not put to sleep. I remember the wire guillotine noose coming out of the little tube.

That noose went into my mouth and around my tonsils. Then the doctor pulled the handle. The wire of the noose cut my tonsils off and the doc removed them with a pair of long tweezers. I can't remember getting stitched up or what he did with the tonsils.

The best part of having my tonsils out was that ice cream was about all I could eat for a day or so. Mom said she saw one of my twins (I had two in my class who were born the same day as I was, October 30) smoking a cigarette the evening he had his taken out. I didn't smoke where my parents could see me doing that.

4. I did catch ringworm on my righ arm. I still have the scar. Probably I caught it from the cats. Anyway, we had a Dickens of a time getting it stopped. Dr. Lukens used iodine to kill it with. I remember he used a florescent light to make the sore show up. When it didn't glow anymore he declared me healed.

5. That about sums things up. We didn't take castor oil or any other periodic home remedies. Thank goodness for. In general I was pretty healthy and strong even though I was small in size.

I might add that most of the Flash Back Friday kids did this one last week. Last week I was in the Baltic Sea on a Princess cruise ship and didn't have a chance to get it done. Internet was costing five cents a minute.

So I am doing this one instead of the one assigned for today which really does not fit me.

Since we are still in London there is a good chance that I will not get every comment answered AGAIN. I am sorry about that because I do like to read your blogs and leave comments.

Neat stroller--push chair! Is that an England safety-thing? Think it was the measles you brought home to me. Dad brought home the mumps to all of us. You stayed awake to see them take out your tonsils, but you told me I should let them put me out when I got mine out a month later. And I'm thinking you got ringworm from our baby calves.

Love the push chair! I miss England.

I enjoyed your flashback but loved hearing the word 'push chair' more. We lived in a little village outside of London for six years...we moved back to the states a year ago. I love London and miss it a lot. Enjoy your holiday!

It absolutely made me cringe to imagine being awake while your tonsils were removed!! Shudder!

I didn't care for how your tonsils were removed. The ice cream yes, but not the tonsils.

Yikes on the horse kicking you too. Bess knew about the stick. Just saying.
