Letter "U" -- Friday's Weekend Roundup 08 / Reflections and-or Street Captures

NOTE:  google has taken over my blog and I cannot post on blogger blogs except as 'anonymous' and sometimes that also.  Today I cannot post comments on Tom's or Margaret's blogs.
"I liked this, Tom, especially the Holstein.  But I have my problem, can only post on Blogger writings if they allow "Anonymous Comments".  Google has taken over my blog, says I'm signed in and returns to the blog I just read with no Results.
NOTE:  I loved Margaret's Rainbow but can't tell her, can't post on her blog.  Also liked Jackie's Unicorn Cones but couldn't tell her.

This Week's Prompts:
Starts with "U"; A Favorite; Tom's choice, "Under";     and Reflections and/or Street Captures
 _ _ _

Starts with "U": "Units" starts with "U", as in "Units of measure."  This scale shows Units of weight measured in ounces and in grams.  Sort of a plastic antique, the scale was made before digital weight scales were invented.

Here I was weighing one of the stacks of four in my 16-ounce box of soda crackers.  It showed four ounces plus a smidgen that would have been for the wax paper wrapper. The scale was sitting on a newspaper.

A Favorite:  "Un" isn't a word, it's a prefix.  Put that Un in front of an adjective or an adverb and it make the word meaning "not" or seemingly "not" the original word.

So, I'm saying that it is Unbelievable that the movie robot, E.T, is now age forty (40)!  Parade Magazine has been keeping track.

Tom's choice
, "Under":  Car here is Under Repair.
There isn't anything wrong with my '98 Ford Mustang GT Convertible but I needed a car for this picture.

The week before there was a big problem in the that NEW battery installed by our local Ford Garage and dealer, Auto Nation of Katy, Texas.  The battery went dead and would not recharge the next day after I drove it.

I didn't like this battery the minute I popped the hood to "see" what was wrong.  The battery didn't fit the battery holder and was sitting cock-eyed on the not useable battery holder box.

It hadn't been driven since May of 2020.

My youngest song bought me a new battery for an Auto Parts place and we put it in.  It held a charge and the next day I drove it to get it state safety inspected.  The next Monday I drove it to the courthouse annex and renewed the license.

NOW it drives like a charm with it's 113K miles.  It has always been garaged since I bought it as a retirement present to me, in 2001 with 49K miles.  Next year it will be 25 years old and be classified as 'Antique' or 'Classic', my choice according to how much use I put it into.

Reflections and/or Street Captures
:  I was taking a picture of our hibiscus's and noticed that I had included one of the windows with a small reflection of the backyard.  So I took this one showing more of the backyard.

Lagniappe: The Countries I've visited that start with the Letter "U".  (I've been to at least 76 countries):

Letter "V" -- Weekend Roundup and Street/Reflections

THE TWENTY-SECOND LETTER FOR THIS SERIES

Prompts are: (A) Starts with the Letter "V"; (B) "Verdant" (Tom's Choice); (C) A Favorite; (D)  Street/Reflections; and (E) A Lagniappe.

  _ _ _ _

(A)
Starts with the Letter "V
":   Valley  starts with the letter "V".  This pretty Green (Verdant??) Valley seen at the edge of the North/South highway in South Africa, northwest from Cape Town.

(B) "Verdant" (Tom's Choice) The Verdant patch of the Verdant Green Peas makes quite a fresh contrast with the rest of my breakfast plate, grits and eggs and green peas.

Do you put a big glob of butter left to melt in the middle of the Grits?  And do you salt and pepper your scrambled eggs?  I do, the grits too.  Also I put catsup on them but not for this day.

Is it Vary vs very? Learn the difference between the homophones Vary vs very, their usage, & easy examples. ✓ Visit Grammarist today! "
(C) A FavoriteVery/Vary.  I Verge on overuse of the word "Very".  https://grammarist.com/homophones/vary-vs-very/

(D) Street/Reflections:
 - What are they doing?
 - What is going on here?
 - Give up or check your answer(s)?  Click here

(E.1) A Lagniappe:  Our church had a Saturday afternoon, May 15, "Crawfish and Car Show".  We had 175 cars, I didn't bring my mother's "Grandma's Green Mustang II" to show. (See it here)

This car is a Model A Ford, I think either a 1929 or 1930.  Our Tom may be able to differentiate.

(E.2) A Lagniappe:  I had planned to post a picture of our first Vinca bloom of the year.  It was a
 pretty white.

Originally a lot from the fall would last us through winter but our hard freeze Texas killed them all.  These come up as volunteer plants, a red one would be next.

Friday’s Hunt v1.4 -- "D" is for ...

1. Starts with D ~~ Downton Abbey, Christmas Preserves, Plum with Port and Spices.  We bought this delicious jar of jam from the World Market after Christmas at less than half price. We also bought some stolen (German sweet bread type, it comes in loaves), cookie mix and some other food stuff.

2. Week's Favorite ~~ Mrs. Jim's Tortilla Soup.  We bought this from KP as a part of her fund raiser for the school.  There were three soup mixes in the box.

The mixes are the flavoring and spices.  You add your own food ingredients.  Mrs. Jim added diced tomatoes, chopped onions, and chopped chicken baked chicken breast.

The soup turned out to be really delicious. It was very good with or without adding some corn chip pieces.

3. Beautiful ~~ Birds on a wire.  I caught these while stopped at a traffic light, I think in Willis Texas. Sometimes there are a lot more but this time they were only on these two wires.  If you decide to count tem please let me know (as a comment) how many you find.

[Added Note:  My blog entries 'auto-post' to my Facebook pageMy son, Tim, commented there that he had counted 86.  I think there are more so you can add your count also.]

4Poem for the week.  I wrote it on my other blog, Jim's Little Photo and Poem Place (link), as an exercise in writing a "real poem" using my writing to portray an "artifice".  E.E. Cummings used these devices (link).

Parts of this poem are real, I do have a fear of girls/ladies who are taller than I am.  But other parts may be part of a sham/artifice (or do they show latent tendencies?).  I will let you guess which that or those might be.

Other notes from that post:

Friday’s Hunt v1.3 -- "C"is for ...

[click on any picture for larger view]

1. "C" is for cooking and cookbook. One of our Christmas presents for KP was a cookbook. Not just any cookbook, but a Disney  Princess Cookbook. KP loves it and Christmas Day she began planning her breakfast menu. Kp is six.

She consulted with Mrs. Jim who helped KP decide that only one item would be good for a start. It would be Miner's Mini Muffins with Blueberries.  And they could cook the next time KP was to come to our house.  That was Winter Holliday between Christmas and New Year's Day.

Everything went along without problems until Mrs. Jim decided that she didn't have the frozen blueberries like she was thinking. That all worked out fine though because she had a bag of large chocolate chips.  KP found that chocolate chips were on the alternate ingredient.  All was fine.

Their mini muffins were really good. We had several with our milk or coffee. The rest of the batch went home with KP. I'm glad they doubled the recipe.

KP is off to a good start in using her cookbook.  My order for a nice 'large breakfast' is being considered.

2.  Week's Favorite:  Wednesday I had a dental appointment to replace a crown that had broken loose.  Mrs. Jim and I carpooled, her bridge was before my dentist so I drove her over and kept the car.  They played at the home of couple belonging to the Conroe (Texas) Sunday school class we left when we moved to Katy.

Fords, left to right:  1914 Ford Model T Roadster with pickup bed conversion;
1930 Ford coupe with 'rumble seat; and 1931 Ford 'woodie' station wagon.

Only wives played, but I visited with John for about a half hour before leaving for the dentist.  John has some antique cars.  The three pictured here are a Model T Ford and two Model A Fords.  We kicked tires for a bit while John filled me in with some of the latest news.

John was instrumental in getting our Montgomery Early Ford V8 Club started.  We both are charter members.  I sold my 1950 Ford Custom Deluxe Tudor V8 when we moved.

3.  Inside. Two Nativity sets out for Christmas.  Above is a Fisher Price set that we ordered for KP last year before Christmas.  This year she had it on the hearth in front of their fireplace.

Just about every time I was to her house she had a different arrangement.  This one was after Christmas.

I would recommend you getting one for any of the little ones in your life.  You'd be surprised what all they know about the birth of Jesus.

This is the Nativity set we bought in Bethlehem, Israel, in 1980 during our Holy Land visit. It was said to be hand made from olive wood. We get it out for display during every Christmas season but leave the manger, Baby Jesus, Mary, and Joseph, and the Angel out all year.  Sometimes a camel and/or other figures also stay.

4.  Poem for the week.  I wrote it as a tribute to David Bowie who died January 10, this week.  For inspiration I listened to and read his song, "Slip Away".  It has a sad ending, I got really sad writing it.  Also inspiring was remembering when KP, Mrs. Jim, and I did an afternoon paddle boat outing on the lake in Regents' Park, London, U.K.

You can read more on my other blog, Jim's Little Photo and Poem Place, where I first posted it. (blog link)

Friday’s Hunt v1.2 -- "B" is for ...

1. Week's Favorite ~~ JP, our great-grandson, and Mom and Dad, our oldest granddaughter and her husband, visited us January 2.  In the picture we get to see Mom showing off JP's new two front teeth.

JP was given a lesson on demolition engineering by his cousin, KPJP is a fast learner as you can see.

JP is now eight months old and he likes to play with the other children.

2. Starts with "B" for Boots.~~ If I was a girl I would wear tall black boots and very short skirts. That's the way I like my boots, for ladies.

Of course I can't change that, I'm way too old. I do have boots, two pair. I have my Army boots, very old now. I also have a nice pair of cowboy boots, a present from Mrs. Jim.

Trouble is that I can no longer wear boots, men's for sure. My podiatrist has me wearing athletic shoes with generic arch supports.

Wonder what I'd look like in a black pair of sandals?

3. (a) Outside ~~ Well, the first two pictures are 'outside' of our home.  I took these during the candle light portion of our church's Christmas Eve worship service. We had there services with nice attendance at them all. ?

3(b). Outside ~~ These are outside of our home.  Also taken Christmas Eve Day.  [again, click on a picture for a larger size]

Friday’s Hunt v1.1 -- "A" is for

Starts with A…Anteaters, aardvarks, and Australia

Mrs. Jim and I had this 'discussion' about the comic strip in Saturday's Houston Chronicle (Friday, January 1, 2016).

Old people don't have too many worldly things to worry about, like ISIS, Mexican immigrants, who will be our next president, etc.  Except that neither of us are for Trump or Cruz.  We think either would ruin our country.

Our discussion about the comic strip was about the creatures in the strip.  I called them Aardvarks, Mrs. Jim knew the weren't, just merely Anteaters.  My position was that they were the same creature by another name.

I was wrong.  Read on. Sorry I have no personal pictures.
BTW, January 1 is Mrs. Jim's Birthday.  We have had a nice day.

Anteaters -- They are cute (?) smallish creatures originally from Mexico, Central America, and South America. [picture from today.com, Feb 21, 2014](Anteater Wikipedia link)

A distinguishing feature they have is a long tongue which can wrap around an ant or termite.

Other species are commonly confused with the anteater, including the common aardvark featured below.

The aardvark doesn't have the pointy nose like the anteater but does have a long tong to catch the insects. (See the baby's long tongue in the picture above.)

Aardvarks originated in Africa.  They are often confused with the other similar animals with anteater characteristics. [picture from Wikipedia, a commons release (link)]

This chart from Wikipedia, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anteater_(disambiguation) , helps distinguish the various animals similar but not related to the African Anteater.

Australia is a nice place to visit.  One of my favorites was the wildlife animal rescue and reserve that we visited in Tasmania, Australia in 2003.  I blogged about this, click here.  I am sure that they had a Numbat or two there but I can't find a picture of any of them.  By going to the 'disambiguation' link above and clicking on the Numbat link you could see one.

Below is Mrs. Jim feeding a kangaroo on our Australia visit to the state of Tasmania.

I did have this picture (below) of what I thought might be a Chinese Pangolin, scaly anteater common name (link), but now I think he was more of some species more like an Iguana.  I sure wish I knew what he is.  I spotted him at the Tasmanian wildlife rescue center also.
Perhaps maybe you know?
