Six Word Saturday

my Six Words:
Happy people -- nice highchair -- Happy Family

[click to enlarge -- Backspace button to return]

Pictured are a couple of happy people, my wife (Mrs. Jim) and Martha, director of the Montgomery County chapter of Family promise.  The high chair was a gift which would go to one of the families being served.

Family promise is an 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization which helps families displaced from their homes to get back on their feet again.  The standard term of stay in the program is three months during which the family has a job or jobs, a  place to live, and most often a car.  And then a financial plan to stay solvent.  This is a tall order and there sometimes an other three month, an extension.

Housing, food, help with getting a job (which may include training and possibly continuing education upon graduation from the program) , the car, and day care for the children are the most pressing needs.  Local churches and church people are a major source of funds.  Grants are also obtained. although they have dwindled to some extent due to the poor economy.  Another source is from fund raising projects and fund raising drives.

A family in need may be referred to the Director or Assistant Director or the clients themselves may make application.  Around sixteen to twenty parents and children are considered a "full house."  These families week will start Sunday afternoon by their moving into church rooms provided that week by one of the supporting churches.  Meals will be provided by the church people of the church for that week.

The next morning it is breakfast and then off for the day.  Typically things are progressing for the families so parents or parent will be off to work.  If they don't have a job it will be spent job seeking and doing activities to find opportunities or to attend training for a job that will sustain the family.  The children go to school if they are of school age or attend child care if not.

In the evening the families return to their church home for the week.  At around 5:30 a host couple(s) from the church greets and helps the families to be ready for a hot dinner prepared by a volunteering Sunday school class.  Many times the adult clients are in evening classes or have homework to do.  Church families come in to eat with the families, then visit with them or play with and help with the children until bedtime.  One couple will stay with the group overnight and help with breakfast and transportation in the morning.

The Day Center is where parents not yet having a job stay to make phone calls, prepare their resumes and complete application forms, prepare themselves for interviews, and things like this.  There they are assisted by the Director and Assistant Director.  The chapter has a van to transport to where the clients need to go if they don't have transportation yet of their own.

Cars and furniture are provided by donations.  Some of the cars are trade-ins that dealers will give.  Other times someone will donate their former car instead of trading it in.  Sometimes the car is purchased by an individual or a group of persons.  The chapter gets them ready by turning the car over to a local automotive repair shop.  Cars donated by dealers are generally fault free, i.e. in fine shape to drive.

This high chair was donated by a local neighbor of the Day Center.  The young family receiving it was most happy for their youngest child having such a nice gift.  The father now has a nice job, one with family health benefits.

Montgomery County Family promise has fifteen or sixteen participating churches.  Mrs. Jim is on the board of directors.  There are several other chapters in the Houston area for this much needed area of service.  Montgomery  County borders on Harris County (home of Houston, Texas).

Mrs. Jim's Status:
She is driving again, even alone by herself.  She is to wear "strong" shoes like her running shoes with a firm sole.  Also only light walking in shoes, heavy stuff she should wear her boot.  That was for this third month.  We still do the home therapy of 'bending' her two affected toes.  Next Friday, March 28, we are hoping for a complete release by her doctor.  Her surgery was on January 2 of this year.

A new MacDonald's cup handling procedure?

People are saying that Katrin is not getting on the blog often enough. (Some of my kids say that too.)

So here she is right after her bath yesterday. She was all frisky but decided it would be OK to settle down enough for me to take her picture or two. She will have her own post not too long from now.

MacDonald's cup holding procedure:
.

[super sized] [super sized]
..
This seems unsanitary to me. If I want someones fingers or thumb in my drink cup (which I don't) then at least they could put on a clean rubber glove before handling it.

Do you think they do this so that the clumsy help they hire won't be so apt to drop the cup.

The lady in a different colored dress was doing this at the Sealy, Texas, MacDonald's Restaurant last Friday. That different color dress denoted either supervisor status or a trainee. I don't know which suited her.

At Hurst, Texas (1401 W Pipeline Rd), it was a young man who grabbed every cup with his fingers inside. He had on a regular colored outfit. And he didn't look like he was just hired yesterday, he was knowing what to do and he did most tasks rather quickly.

What about your MacDonald's, is this a nationwide procedure now?

Adi Can -- Be a working dog

Jim's Little Photo Place today:
Wordless Wednesday (still has a classic Morris Minor 1000
I found when traveling in the Isle of Man)

Today: National Punctuation Day (so do it write!)
Source: Kelley of Regis and Kelley today
Picture of the day:

[Click any picture for large size] [super sized picture]

Yesterday Adi was a working dog. We visited residents who live at Hearthstone Assisted Living Center in Conroe, Texas. We have made several friends there, they like to visit with us. Adi sure gets a lot of loving and petting there!

We sign in at the front desk after visiting the residents who are sitting out front, either in wheel chairs or the rocking chairs always there. This is the South you know, even Mrs. Jim has a white wooden rocking chair on our porch.

After that we walk through the halls stopping at the parlors, game area, and puzzle place. Most times we stop in at the Harbor, a portion of the center especially reserved for Alzheimer afflicted residents. Today we ran out of time and couldn't.

We did have pretty long conversations with two of Adi's friends in particular, we look them up every time we come. The rest of the time was spent with shorter visits with so many I lost track. I'm sure Adi did too.

We are a certified Pet Therapy Team, certified by the Delta Society. We are trained, then have to pass both a written test and a two-part suitability test which shows Adi's training and her gentleness, and how well we handle ourselves in different simulated 'surprise' situations. [Delta Society link]

Adi and I belong to the Montgomery Pet Partners (link) which consists of teams, an animal and an owner/other, who assist in various situations where therapy animals are helpful. Our people visit hospitals, nursing homes, and assisted living centers. Interested persons may also join our group but cannot participate with an animal until certified by the Delta Society (tests are passed).

The other aspect is reading, Adi is a reading dog as well. This involves tutoring a child where the child reads to the dog (and owner of course) and in weekly visits to the children's reading programs, mostly on Saturday mornings.

Now, all work and no play make Adi and Jim dull kids:

Our morning began with a nice walk back from the golf pro shop where Mrs. Jim dropped us off for her 8:40 tee time. She went golfing with her buds. Actually my day began with a Tuesday morning Bible study with about 15 other men at the club house. Then our walk. [super sized picture]
Too bad Adi isn't a counting dog, she could enjoy herself counting all these horse apples that the winds from Hurricane Ike blew off. Adi can count to two and six, one bite of graham cracker is never enough when I'm taking my medicine. She has one bite and then the second when I am on pill number six. [super sized picture]
We ended up down in the quiet area of the golf course. It is down from our house just a short walk away. The lake is up after our rains but it will be lowered soon for inspection of the dam. Hurricane Ike may have damaged it as did Hurricane Rita three years ago. That year the lake remained empty all next summer still while the dam was being repaired. [super sized picture]

Adi got tired, she is tiring more easily now in her older years. (My Autumn poem link)

In case you don't go to that link, here is the picture I have posted there:

Word of the day:

HELPMATE, n.
Devil's Dictionary: A wife, or bitter half.
"Now, why is yer wife called a helpmate, Pat?"
Says the priest. "Since the time 'o yer wooin'
She's niver [sic] assisted in what ye were at --
For it's naught ye are ever doin'."

"That's true of yer Riverence [sic]," Patrick replies,
And no sign of contrition envices;
"But, bedad, it's a fact which the word implies,
For she helps to mate the expinses [sic]!"
Marley Wottel

Urban Dictionary: single mom -- A woman working more than 40 hours a week while simeotaneously cooking, cleaning , and nurturing the future generation without the benefit of a helpmate.
TheFreeDictionary: A helper and companion, especially a spouse. [Probably alteration of helpmeet (influenced by mate).]

Word History: The existence of the synonyms helpmeet and helpmate is the result of an error compounded. God's promise to Adam in Genesis 2:18, as rendered in the King James version of the Bible (1611), was to give him "an help [helper] meet [fit or suitable] for him." The poet John Dryden's 1673 use of the phrase "help-meet for man," with a hyphen between help and meet, was one step on the way toward the establishment of the phrase "help meet" as an independent word. Another was the use of "help meet" without "for man" to mean a suitable helper, usually a spouse, as Eve had been to Adam. Despite such usages, helpmeet was not usually thought of as a word in its own right until the 19th century. Nonetheless, the phrase "help meet" probably played a role in the creation of helpmate, from help and mate, first recorded in 1715

Plans for the day:

Check blog comments and answer, especially the Little Photo Place for Wordless Wednesday madness.
Shop a little in Montgomery and maybe Conroe and Willis -- for new supply of hot dogs, relish, ice cream, frozen dinners, and whatever sounds good. Our refrigerator and freezer are bare. Also need to get the heavier wire to tie the two bushes.
Mrs. Jim is playing bridge with her three cronies in the afternoon. She will wash Katrin in the morning.
After bridge she will run a couple of errands then go to the church to finish her job--volunteer--doing orchestra librarian work.
After that is orchestra practice. Mrs. Jim plays the viola.

Update: 9:45 AM, a neighbor just called to say that our electricity came on at 11:35 last night. We will be coming home!
We are still with Karen and Billy. Estimates for our power are 19, 22, and 29 for electricity. Then we will return home. All our kids have power except for Mitch and Carmen, we haven't heard from them lately.
Yesterday we played golf here in Katy, that was nice.
Link to IKE destruction pictures on the Web (I know, you've seen too much already).
Tomorrow I may 'read a car' here, check back if you'd like.

We are fine after Hurricane Ike came through. Thank you for checking on us.

We evacuated to Karen and Billy's today because we have no electricity yet at our home. Their light's flickered a little and went out for a few minutes but didn't stay off.

Please note: Nothing blows down in this video, the strong wind is just steadily blowing from the west. You can see it blowing across the golf course. My feelings won't be hurt if you just watch a little of it because it is basically the same for the whole time.

.

[Jim1Jim1 YouTube]
.
We had no damage to our home, not even a shingle was lost. The winds reached about 80 MPH for a couple of hours.

So many have lost so much more than just electricity and their food.

We did have a was wax myrtle bush to blow over. I cut part of it out and will try to straighten the rest up better when the flower bed dries up some.

Those garbage pails are full of the stuff mostly from our refrigerator and freezer that we had to out.

This pretty horse apple tree out back in the golf course lost one of its two trunks. And the wind blew most of the apples off onto the ground.

Trees in the road were quite common. A few, like this one, were on our subdivision roads. The ones falling on the power lines cause the outages.

About one of ten gas stations are open, they run out of fuel quite often. Some limit to ten gallons, others to $20 or $50 to stretch it out further. Lines are fairly common, a half mile is common as well. Coming in to Houston from our end a lot of the evacuees from Dallas are running on empty. Some run out of gas waiting in line.

Yesterday we went to Willis and picked up four bags of ice that FEMA was giving out. For people who have transportation, this works pretty good. Buses are non-existent up where we live, taxis are few, so most of the ice went to people whose could drive. They were out of rations and we didn't need water.

FEMA was at three other locations in our county, and sixteen in Harris (for Houston) County. So far that is nineteen distribution places for four million people, lined up in single lane car lines. And they operate from 10 AM to 6 PM, not real good for working people. [Before posting this I saw on the news that the volunteers who are handing out the stuff for FEMA at one place figured out that two lines of cars could go through twice as fast as one. Of course they ran out of ice, water, and rations earlier.]

Just not good. I am sure we will hear all the good and bad about FEMA, but for sure they don't want the bad rap they got for Katrina and Rita.

.

[large picture][super sized] [large picture][super sized]
.
Mrs. Jim has a tee time for Friday, we will come back if these guys have all the course ready. Fallen trees are left and right at this time. In the meantime we will play golf over here with Billy and Karen.

We probably will go to the grocery store just for the fun of it because they are open over here. Gas lines are shorter too.

Things that didn't stay in Tekamah (and Nebraska)

We got home late this Thursday afternoon from Blogstock '08 and a detour to Telluride, Colorado. Our Colorado visit will be told in part in a later blog.

[large size][picture courtesy of Jerry (Jerry's blog)]

About half of the Blogstock '08 festival attendees wore t-shirts with this logo. Mrs. Jim and I didn't get one as we really weren't around very much during business hours.

Mrs. Jim and I didn't have anything to hide. I scratched my head and found some things that did not stay in the Corn Country (Nebraska).

[large picture] [super sized]

Several of these items shown are from the Welcome Bag given to Mrs. Jim and me the first night of Blogstock, starting at the top row from left to right:
1. A pack of two black and one red markers from the Dollar General store in Blair, Nebraska. We had to get these to make our poster for the float.
2. A nice tall mug from the Morrow Kennels. This will be nice for my Arnold Palmer drinks.
3. A neat little star template I made to stencil the stars onto the poster. As a retired engineer, it had to be almost perfect. See the poster below.
4. A new phone book having Tekamah, Herman, and Blair phone numbers in addition to Fremont. Borrowed from the Super 8 Motel at Blair.
5. A very nice book made by
Ralph Campbell for the Blogstock attendees. It contained a bio and a couple of posts of the others and a few who wanted to come but couldn't. Thanks, Ralph.
6. A jar of honey from bees on Cliff's farm. Well, from Sue Bee who has hives on the farm.
7. A nice jar of cherry jelly. I suspect the cherries were from trees on the farm.
8. A bright orange bag the Blogstock favors came in. The computer cartoon reads "I love my computer because all my friends live in it."
9. June 25th Burt County Plaindealer with an article about Blogstock written by
Cliff Morrow.
10. Ten washers I got that were left over from weighing down the trim on our float
.
11 (Not shown) Two nice ball pens, green and white, advertising the Morrow Kennels.

[large picture] [super sized]

A neat little sore from rubbing on the stirrup leathers on Major's saddle. I had left my blue jeans at the motel. No pain, no gain, my nice ride, see the previous post, was well worth this little bit.

[large picture] [super sized]

[large picture] [super sized]

Four dozen plus two golf balls given us by our cousin, John, of Tekamah. John walks a lot and when his walk is at the cemetery beside the golf course, he finds many 'out of bound' balls.

Thank you, John. And Cliff, you might identify one of these (golf rule number one, identify your ball).

At any rate is 'finders keeper' rule for our family and John graciously gave us these balls that he had found.

Now, Mrs. Jim and I will play 'one for me, one for you' with the NIKE and Callaway balls. Then Mrs. Jim will take what she wants and I can have those she doesn't want.

Something that did stay in Nebraska

[large picture] [super size]

We worked hard to make this poster (aren't my home drawn stars beautiful!) and similar mate, then left both of them in Cliff's truck. We aren't sure whether or not he will save it for us or give them to a cousin. We would like to have them to show Adi. Maybe she has looked at the blog. I hope so.

Bloggers writing about Blogstock '08 (so far)

Be sure to click on any picture you like to make it large enough to see real good.
http://cliffmorrow.blogspot.com/ Cliff said we made the paper in three places and left links to two.
http://homespunheadlines.blogspot.com/ Ralph put on a couple of pictures that have Mrs. Jim, one of me.
http://lz-blogger.blogspot.com/ Jerry's blog is the most comprehensive report so far (I'm checking them as I write).
http://slidingthroughlife.blogspot.com/ Rachel has a nice picture of Mrs. Jim talking and working with Mrs. Morrow. I'm there too in another one.
http://changelog.complete.org/plugin/tag/blogstock John and Terrah's son, Jacob, was the hit of Blogstock '08! Mrs. Jim and I couldn't figure out how he was able to eat all the sour cherries he picked.
http://forest.complete.org/ Terrah doesn't have pictures but does have some nice commentary on Blogstock '08.
http://jamiesmindlessblather.blogspot.com/ Jamie Dawn has some nice things the rest of us missed.
http://jwiley.typepad.com/ Jerry has a neat little rundown on some logistics of attending blogstock.

Note: Scroll down on these blogs if you are looking this post in July 2008 and you will find them. If later, you probably should do their blog search--upper left hand box on most--on their blog using the word, Blogstock.

We surely did have a good time. And we got to meet quite a few fellow bloggers and their families.

Forty-five years of marriage!

That's right, my sister-in-law and her husband (Velma and Royce) are celebrating their 45th wedding anniversary today! How in the world did they manage that? (They are the couple on the left in this picture below from last year)

.

I didn't ask that question, instead I asked Velma what her favorite Bible verse was.

Her answer to that one? She and Royce put their heads together and came up with this one. "I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me."
***

Did this apply to their happy marriage also? Yes indeed, they are an excellent witness to the Christian life including their marriage.

You see, they and their marriage are blessed by the love of Christ! Being married to each other for forty-five years was for them to live the love of Christ towards each other.

They are also blessed with three loving children and their spouses and five loving grandchildrean! God has indeed blessed this couple.

HAPPY ANNIVERSARY GUYS! HAPPY ANNIVERSARY, ROYCE AND VELMA!

Let me tell you about my operation

Jim's Little Blog post # 1002

It all started a few of weeks ago. Jim had given me a bath and was drying my feet.

Then he gave my right paw a big squeeze and talked about a tick! I almost panicked, "A tick! A tick! O my goodness (OMG stands for this in Jim's house)! A tick!"

Mrs. Jim was called, partly because Jim was hurting my paw and partly because he didn't have his glasses on. Mrs. Jim said, no, that wasn't a tick. "TYG! (Thank you goodness) I hate ticks."

It isn't the ticks I hate so badly, it is the pulling of them off. Invariably the head, full of blood, stays in my bod. That means get out the hot matchstick ends to burn them out and to burn them dead.

You see, ticks will live without a body and just work their way further into your skin. Sucking blood as they go.

If it wasn't a tick, then Jim said we would get Dr. Hablinski have a look at it. We went right away that afternoon. Dr. said it wasn't a bug or a boil, but it looked like I had another tumor (link to the last one).

Since it came on so soon after the last one, he wanted to take the tumor off. And while it was going off, I would be asleep and he would like to clean my teeth too. We made an appointment for May 1st.

Along with the appointment was a package of 18 pills, with the directions to take two a day starting five days before my surgery. Jim said they were 250 Clavamox, an antibiotic to stave off infection of my heart. I have a heart murmur of 'two.' (Jim takes Amoxilin before his dental procedures too, he has a 'double heart murmur "of two" scaled.')

. . . . . . . [large picture] [super sized]
I really enjoyed my car ride, but then I saw we were at my vet's office. Now I like Dr. Hablinski a lot, but just a lot of times they mess with my body and I don't like that. I don't like shots either, but there were no shots today (while Jim was there).

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . [large picture] [super size]

"They're taking me away, they're taking me away!"

"I think I should get paid for this pose"
"I smell trouble here"

[large picture] [super size]

"It won't hurt, sweet heart
She's a nice lady, she likes puppies
Everybody here likes Adi
You'll be all better real soon
I'll come to get you in just a little bit"

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . [large picture] [super sized]
Now that it was over, our ride home was fine!

But, did they hurt me? It must have hurt because look at my foot and all the stitches they put in. And clean your teeth? Of course that hurts.

Only thing was, I really didn't feel a thing after the needle stuck me. Yes, there was a scary needle and it didn't hurt like it looked. In fact, I was so at ease that I slept a lot.

When I woke up, it was all done. I heard them calling Jim to come get me in about half an hour.

He got right over here. Was I ever glad to see him. They said I ran all over the vet's waiting room and into the first observation room for quite a little while. Then I settle down in time to hear that I would still have to take my antibiotics 'til they were finished, keep the halo on for ten days and AFTER the stitches were removed, and cool it for the rest of the day on half rations. Boy! A poor doggie girl isn't even supposed to eat much after a grueling ordeal like this.

. . . . . . . . . . . . .. . .. . [large picture] [super sized]

So I lay around this retirement house with Mrs. Jim and Jim. We did go for a go golf cart ride one day to get the mail. I think we will do that again today.

The cyst? Doc's office called this morning and left a message, THEY were all gone. It was an "abnormal benign tumor." That is good news but we will ask but I think some bad because it was a tumor and not an ordinary cyst.

Why I stopped buying clothes

PJs were last item, except for a pair of jeans.
I bought two pair six years ago, they were $1.00 each at WalMart in their Fall Clearance Sale.

The Kids and Mrs. Jim buy them for me.
I am getting them trained pretty good. Most of the time the clothes even fit.

More than half of the clothes people buy are golf shirts. I have them trained for this too, they MUST HAVE A POCKET. But not very many golf shirts have pockets any more so a lot I get don't have them. Mrs. Jim is best at finding ones with pockets.

Money or gift cards are next in line for what people give. They think I will buy me some new clothes but that seldom happens.

Mrs. Jim is my fashion director.
They things I buy for myself generally don't match or aren't stylish. When I dress up I ask her how my clothes will look, quite often even before I even put them on. She buys me very fashionable duds if I will just wear them.

I am a retired college teacher, professors are supposed to look seedy.
And I do.

Now I need reader help. I started this post back in February with a topic outline having only the first three reasons and no explanations.

I have forgotten any other ideas I had on why I stopped buying clothes but I know there are many more.

Your input won't hurt my feelings and will help a lot with this post.

Thank you.

BIG NOTE HERE!!!!

MaryT, this is not the kind of help I wanted or needed!!

MaryT, aka the teach, of the Work of the Poet has tagged me. I soon will dutifully and reluctantly answer as I always have dutifully and reluctantly before. Some of you may remember my humble efforts. (link)

However, as you will see in Item # 8, there is a catch. I am supposed to tag in turn five of my blogging friends. I have many blogging friends and I do not wish to be unfair and show partiality or the likes, so please, could I have five volunteers to be tagged? Please?

These are what you would asked to answer when you volunteer:

1. What was I doing 10 years ago?

2. What are 5 Things on my To-Do List for today:

3. Snacks I Enjoy:

4. Things I would do if I were a Billionaire:

5. Three Of My Bad Habits:

6. 5 Places I have Lived:

7. Jobs I Have Had:

8. 5 People I Want To Know More About:I Am Tagging:

See, that isn't hard.

.
So volunteers, please volunteer now!!

"Nothing by mouth to eat or drink after midnight" [two of us]

UPDATE: Adi is home and resting. She was so glad to see me when I came to 'rescue' her, she ran all around the vet's office--on her leash--barking and yelping. She was very hungry when she got home. I probably didn't help her enough there, they have her on half meals until tomorrow to help her throat rest.

Adi goes under the anesthetic, knife, and scraper. We go in at 9:00 to Dr. Hablinski at the Willis Animal Clinic.

She will have another cyst removed (link to previous surgery) from her right front paw topside. While she is under Dr. Hablinski will clean her teeth. She has had her teeth cleaned once before, also under anesthetic.

Of course she had to be squeaky clean. She tolerates her bath but really gets frisky after.

.

I will be on a liquid diet today as Friday (5-2-2008) I will go in to St. Lukes at the Woodlands at 9:00 for a colonoscopy.

Both of us can have our meds, Friday until I get back home it is nothing by mouth except for my blood pressure pill and a sip of water.
