Weekend Roundup/Reflections -- das Ende

HAPPY NEW YEAR

 _ _ _ _

This Week's Prompts are New Year, A Favorite, Festive, and A Lagniappe for the end of the year.

I finished the alphabet last week with the letter "Z".  Not sure about 2022, whether or not we will have alphabet photos to find.
_ _ _ _

My New Year Resolutions ditty.  It gets longer over here:

I used to think Resolutions

 Never again
After I found out
 How far away
Monahans is from me
 Monahans Texas
Is 510 miles from me
 Here in Katy Texas

 Resolutions are useless
Useless as driving to Monahans
 Because I don't know
Don't know anyone there

And I don't know
Anything I need to Resolve
 _ _ _ _

A Favorite. Our backyard in the winter.  It was 82F this afternoon, we had lunch outside on the picnic table.  We may get cold this weekend so I will take care of the Hibiscus by bringing them into the garage.

 _ _ _ _

Festive.  The candy corn is a leftover from my Birthday.  It and National Candy Corn Day are celebrated the same day, October 31.

This year it was very Festive as we had a family lunch at a nice place.  Two of the five kids came with spouses, two granddaughters and spouse, and great grandchildren.  After lunch we watched one of the grandchildren play soccer and football

The cinnamon jellybeans wanted to be in the picture and the jars were full of candy when we left the Marriot Hotel in Washington, D.C. a few years ago.

  _ _ _ _

A Lagniappe:  This is an old picture that belonged to a friend of Mrs. Jim.  The lady died several years ago, we don't know much about the photo, it seems to be taken at a business workshop.  The fellow third from the left is of the friend's father.

 _ _ _ _

Reflections.
Water Reflections.  Nice sunset too.  Weather guy is telling us to pack the swimsuits Saturday night as we will have a few days of cold, almost freezing during the nights for the first few.

Letter "A" -- -- Weekend Roundup and Street/Reflections

HAPPY JULY 4th DAY !!!

2 TV Houston, Weather]

(a.k.a. "Independence Day")
- - -
A NEW SERIES of ALPHABET posts STARTS TODAY
(means we are half way through the year!!)

THE FIRST LETTER FOR THIS SERIES:

 - The Letter "A" Prompts are: (A) Starts with the Letter "A"; (B) "Ample" (Tom's Choice); (C) A Favorite; (D) Street/Reflections; and (E) A Lagniappe.

 - - - -

[click picture once or twice for larger or larger still view]

(A) Starts with the Letter "A":  Asleep starts with "A".  These guys "sleep a lot," I bought the stuffed Snoopy dog in Omaha, Nebraska, in 1975 before Christmas on sale at Macy's.  The puppy I bought for Adi in 2011 but hadn't given it to her before she died in 2012.  I keep that one to remind me of how nice a dog she was. (Adi's meme)

(B) "Ample" (Tom's Choice):   "Ample" time to make this blog post ready for Friday, now one minute past midnight Thursday morning.

Since I am the worrywart type I like to have Ample supplies around and always be ready.  The blog will be ready shortly and I'll post it tomorrow morning.

p.s. I write most all my posting here using my old Galaxy 8 smart cell phone.  Even the picture postings.  I tweak and spell check again with Mrs. Jim's computer if I have time.

[Photo courtesy of our ABC13 TV Channel promotion]

(C) A Favorite:  I like this capture because of the '68 Chevy Malibu that is like, even the color, Mrs. Jim's car when we were married.  I plan to see Jordana Brewster driving it in the latest movie episode of "The Fast and Furious."

(D) Street/Reflections:  I got caught taking this one by the younger great granddaughter .  These two greats have excellent appetites and like most foods.

(E.1) A Lagniappe:   This year's Father's Day gathering.  All five of the kids came, some grandchildren, greats, and the youngest great-great.  Spouses too.  The children are getting old too, the youngest son is 61 and one younger daughter is still in her forties.

Three are married, our older daughter is a new widow, her husband died of the COVID-19, and the oldest son has been retired a for a few years.

We ate at my favorite Mexican restaurant in the Heights,
Berryhill In The Heights
 (of Houston).

(E.2) A second Lagniappe:  Carryover from last week, Our neighbor's McLaren is plenty Zippy.  It is a 2014 McLaren,

2014 McLaren MP4-12C Coupe: Review, Trims, Specs, Price ... (link)

I still have not ridden in it "yet''.

(E.3) A Third Lagniappe: "Surfside Beach, also known locally as Surfside, is a city in Brazoria County, Texas, United States, that is situated on Follet's Island by the Gulf of Mexico near the city of Freeport. The population was 482 at the 2010 census.[5] . . ."

Letter "O" -- Weekend Roundup and Street/Reflections

Note my "booted foot!!!"

I fell last Friday and broke, of all body parts, my right foot big toe.  Foot doctor says to wear it for eight weeks and hope the break will grow back together.
 _ _ _ _

THE FIFTHTEENTH LETTER FOR THIS SERIES) - the Letter "O" Prompts are: (A) Starts with the Letter "O"; (B) "Over" (Tom's Choice); (C) A Favorite; (D) Street/Reflections; and (E) A Lagniappe.
 _ _ _ _

[click on the picture for larger viewing - click that picture for larger yet]

(A) Starts with the Letter "O":   Orange Tree starts with "O".   It's time for an update.  My much posted Orange Tree froze in our unusual February winter storm and a Blanket Over it wasn't enough help.

I am thinking of a pretty blooming cherry tree to replace it but Mrs. Jim thinks that maybe our winters aren't long enough and cold enough for cherries. It will be replaced with a small tree again.

Body Outline; Lower Right (click for larger)
[my Cape Horn, S. Africa Beach photo]

(B) "Over" (Tom's Choice):   Penguins all Over.  I used this picture in my Day 8 NaPoWriMo "poem", at .

(C) A Favorite:   Left Over Mac 'n Cheese.  This day I was almost Out of Luck, Only Five Pieces of macaroni were left for me.

Like many Other Grandparents we keep a supply of Mac 'n Cheese for our youngest 1granddaughter who lives within walking distance from us.   Right now I have a small bowl of Left Over Mac in our refrigerator.

(D) Street/Reflections:   "Family Feud" score board,  Reflected on the coffee table.  To win $2000 today's contestant winning team needed at least 200 points, they ended up with only 153.

Note my "booted foot!!!"  I fell and broke, of all body parts, my right foot big toe.  Foot doctor says to wear it for eight weeks and hope the break will grow back together.

(E) A Lagniappe:   A nice Tea for Old Folk had these goodies for eating along with our tea.  We were just about to sample the chocolate puff cookies when we had to leave for a tour of the place.
 _ _ _ _

 - I am attempting to write at least one poem a day for the National Poem Writing Month.  Today is Day Seven of the 30, you can see my progress here, .
 _ _ _ _

Bonus Questions:

(1)  Tell about any dealings you have had with an Afternoon
Tea.   When we are on a cruise, most cruise ships have Afternoon Tea at about 3:00PM for an hour, either in a dining room or large lounge.  I like the lounge high looking out over the bow or the aft on showing contrails of water being kicked up by the propellers.
Also, our younger daughter, KP likes Hotel Afternoon Tea, especially the hotels in London.

(2) What is your favorite Word starting with "O"?  Mine today will be  "Often", because unlike many other words, it only has one definition.  And also because it means things are happening.

(3) Anything else you were reminded of here that you would like to tell about?

The Letter "I" -- Weekend Roundup and Reflections

The thirty-fifth issue of Weekend Roundup for this year, 2020...
(THE NINETH LETTER FOR THIS SERIES)
- the Letter "I" Prompts are:
(A) Starts with the Letter "I";
(B) "Intricate" (Tom's Choice);
(C) A Favorite; and
(D) Reflections.
_ _ _ _

(A) Starts with the Letter "I": My "I" is for Insect.  I am partial to Bees and Butterflies, butterflies are pretty while bees work to make us honey.  Both are pollinators, Monarch Butterflies crave Milkweed plants. And both are diminishing rather rapidly in numbers.  Our Sierra Society had this sticker on their web site for the taking.

This little bug on my finger found me in our backyard, it had landed in the pool.  Flying ants come seeking a home and to get a drink.

Not all insects are likeable, really some are downright pesky towards us.  Some bite us folk, some spread germs to make us sick, and others damage our crops and flowers.

My Father's Day present from younger Daughter and youngest Granddaughter was four cans of flying insect spray,  a joke gift as I once said when my last can was being used on a wasp was, "For Father's Day I would like to have four cans of flying insect spray."

(B) "Intricate" (Tom's Choice):  This was a very Intricate Rescue Transaction of a small toad or frog marooned in our swimming pool, resting on the regulator device in the hose network for our bottom skimmer machine.

Still alive, we had to pull the hose towards us so that the 'frog' could be reached.  Then with a stick we knocked him off gently into a can which we then emptied onto the backyard grass.  After it landed it promptly scampered away.

Yes, frogs are green and come from tadpoles but toads are brownish-gray and I don't think they come from tadpoles.  Most trapped in the pool filters are the young rabbits who haven't yet learned they can drink the water but can't get back out of the pool.

(C) A Favorite:  A few weeks back I had promised to show the Coke Floats that I had forgotten to take a picture of before we ate them.

There were hardly any calorie's because the ingredients were on the "Lite side".  Our drink was a Diet Coke of which we used one half each.  The ice cream was two dips of Blue Bell Homemade Vanilla Lite.

Blue Bell Light Homemade Vanilla is also our favorite Ice Cream varieties.  Only problem is that the Blue Bell had discontinued it's Lite creams for the duration.  We hope that they will resume making it when the COVID-19 epidemic is over.  This was our last carton from our horde.

(D) Reflections:  I may have posted this before.  If you've seen it I am sorry.  I might fix it.  The picture is of a part of our backyard through the back door full length window.
The Reflection is of me, a selfie that wasn't in my plan.
 _ _ _ _

Bonus Questions:

What is your favorite ice cream treat?  Mine is Vanilla ice cream with a still warm piece of most any fruit pie.  Mince Meat please not.

Tell about one of your experiences with wild life.  In our first home, two years after the beginning of our 47 year marriage, we had Mama Rockie Racoon trying to live in our attic.

We had to get her out of there before she had babies.  Another Intricate Rescue, we waited for her out time for eating and doing what ladies do when they go to town.  Then I nailed boards over the hole she had made in the wooden shingles so she wouldn't come back to her nest.

Next was to place the wire trap we bought from the Feed Store baited with tasty goodies.  That probably was warmed, so it would smell good, cat food.  The next morning there she was inside the trap, and mad because she could not get out.

I carefully lowered her from the roof with a long rope and then loaded her in the back of the pickup truck, carefully because her long legged paws were trying to scratch me.  We took her to a wild life preserve farm and Mrs. Jim opened the trap's door after I had put it on the ground.  She skittled away fast, we think to get a new home.

With a different mother, this happened each fall until we had a new asphalt shingle roof installed.  Those old weather beaten shingle pulled down and out as the racoons had learned.

The Letter "D" -- Weekend Roundup and Reflections

The twenty-ninth issue of Weekend Roundup for this year, 2020...
(THE FOURTH LETTER FOR THIS SERIES)
- the Letter D" Prompts are:
(A) Starts with the Letter "D";
(B) A Couple (Tom's Choice);
(C) A Favorite; and
(D) Reflections.
_ _ _ _

(A) Starts with the Letter "D":   "Die Afrikannse Taalmonumt" is The Afrikaans Language Monument dedicated to the acceptance of "Afrikaan as the official language of South Africa.  We visited the monument on a hill not too far away. (

Wikipedia Link)

For us the sign, one of the lines, directed us on the "Road to Our Winery Picnic and Tasting."  And the monument is pretty and large.

Look like good South African fun outing?  Each couple had a basket full of good food.   We were a ways northwest out of Cape Town.

(B) Dark (Tom's Choice):  I am afraid of the Dark and what can't be seen in the Dark.

One thing I am not afraid of is the International Date Line.  At the right is a picture of it from our plane, out the window.  Unfortunately, it was Dark outside.
 ..
We were over the ___ Sea flying from Australia to our home near Houston, Texas.

(C) A Favorite:  This is the Outhouse on our farm.  Unfortunately a tree fell on it and then it became unusable.  Fortunately for indoor plumbing coming in 1938 along with electricity.

Fortunately also was that my little sister would walk with me before bedtime, in the Dark.  That she only did if I let her carry the flashlight.

(D) Reflections:   We were at the "Old Town" in South Dubai looking across the water to the city North.
