A Favorite: Lady Bird Johnson was my Favorite First Lady. 284 acres of The Johnson Texas farm was made into an open to the public, Lady Bird Johnson Wildlife Center. It is now a state botanic garden and arboretum with over 10,000 different species of wildflowers from all over Texas. It was featured on the March 2024 issue of the Southern Living Magazine, page 88 and ff.
More than 240,000 visitors have been coming every year. Mrs. Jim and I took my parents from Nebraska there in the 1980's, They, retired former farmers, were thoroughly impressed. I think my dad, generally a Republican voted for him, same as our family here in Texas.
A Lagniappe: Two Love Birds
A Sad Update!! A squirrel has eaten these birds' eggs, robbed from their nest; so they have no reason to stay here. They are headed further north in their migratory journey up from Central America.

Letter "C" -- Friday's Weekend Roundup 12 and Reflections and/or Street/Candid Captures

From left to right, my inherited watch, Mrs. Jim's father's clock, and my grandfather's pocket watch. Grandpa had hocked this clock when he needed to come back to Nebraska after having found the soil was for miserable farming soil, full of rocks as well.
A Favorite: Mrs. Jim has a nice Clock Collection for an amateur.
I have three clocks, an "atomic clock" still in a box, a Western Union rectangular wall clock pictured here, and the 'inherited watch' also above. Technically Grandpa's watch is mine as well as the kitchen clock in my growing up home. I inherited the wall clock. My parents, former owners, were married in 1932. The ones you are seeing are all in Mrs. Jim's collection.

Starts with "C": Well, I 'have' a Corvette. Last week, the "B" post, I mentioned that a Corvette was on my Buckett List. Yes, I 'have' it, a toy, but it belongs to my younger daughter, a Barbie Doll Corvette. She left it here with most of her toys.
Mrs. Jim inherited these traveling clocks.
This clock was in the kitchen of our farmhouse growing up. My parents received it as a wedding present. Note in its location photo, left, is another clock in the upper right, possibly my grandparents.
Mrs. Jim inherited these three furniture top clocks as well.
Mrs. Jim inherited the antique clock on the left, the history is on the note behind the front door, see below. We purchased the newer Emperor clock on the right. I had to assemble it from mail order although they were also selling these models in kit form.
The note on the door on the bottom left above was pasted on.
It tells that the History a little of the Antique clock above to the left. The note reads,
- Thomas Whipp (maker), Rochdale Long case clocks, 1820-1842 (sources I found said "circa 1770")
- Rochdale is 10 miles North of Manchester
- Purchased in Chipping Norton, Oxfordshire, 5 July 1965

Letter "M" -- Friday's Weekend Roundup 11 and Reflections and-or Street/Candid Captures

What do she and our family have in common?

The young lady is 6 feet 4. Her 49 inch legs, from thigh to toe, may set a world record. For sure for Houston they did and probably are a record in Texas also. Things are bigger in Texas.
For sure too she would intimidate me if we were alone in an elevator. Ladies who are taller than me worry me.
Street/Reflections: Our 2012-13 New Zealand Princes cruise ended up with us being in Sydney, Aus. We had a wonderful three and a half days there.

Starts with "M": "Minutes" to get downtown Houston in a morning with a average good traffic. We live in Katy on the left, I-10 with 44 Minutes. "Houston is the fourth larges city in the United States."
A Favorite: Houston Methodist Hospital West front entrance, scale model. Many nice cars, several old, toy cars. Perhaps I should will them mine, 27 or eight, plus a motorcycle, last count.
"Mini": Mini Skirts were the rage long ago, back then ladies liked to show off their pretty long legs. (even Mrs. Jim had one).

Letter "E" -- Friday's Weekend Roundup 11 and Reflections and-or Street/Candid Captures
- Tom's this Week's Prompts: Starts with "E." A Favorite. "E"arly.
We both were watching the little tugboat move our ship away from the dock where we boarded.
But Mrs. Jim (here) caught me taking her picture. Most time she humors me and doesn't complain. Mostly, when I'm driving she isn't real keen on that, me taking pictures.

Starts with "E": Egret starts with an "E". You can read more about this one here (she/he got killed--on the bridge never more). Some of you probably have read about it in poem form. I won't forget this bird.
A Favorite: This little rabbit and his little brother were side by side under a tree Eating, nibbling on some grass. By the time I was ready to get for picture taking they had separated so that I could only get one. I chose the closer of the two, big brother.

Tom's suggestion, "Early": Early to Bed wasn't the issue here, back in 2011. (Katrin, still asleep here, died in 2013.)
"Katrin had a perfectly good bed. But when we went over to pick her up after our return from visiting Karen's in London there was no bed for her. The lady who keeps her was out and her husband could not find the bed.
That was not a problem for the moment although I helped him look for it we both gave up on finding it. When the lady came home she called Mrs. Jim per instructions as the husband had given us too low a figure for her keep.
After settling on the fee, Mrs. Jim asked about the bed. She said to come on over. When Mrs. Jim got there this new bed was waiting in the utility room for us. Of course, it wasn't Katrin's bed, not the one we had brought.
Then the lady fessed up. Another dog that she had named (neither of us can remember that dog's name) had attacked the bed and chewed it up until it was in pieces of foam rubber scattered on the floor.
We don't know who paid for this new bed. Mrs. Jim knows the dog's owner. Either the owner or the keeper lady paid for it. We don't care who. And Katrin is happy so all is well.
Oh yes, we think Katrin had brought a toy, a little stuffed chipmunk. We think we are ahead so the toy wasn't made an issue."

Letter "D" -- Friday's Weekend Roundup 11 and Reflections and-or Street/Candid Captures

"D" for Dark (Tom's choice): Here at right is the picture of The International Dateline that I took from the flight attendants' window on our way home from Sydney, Australia. It was at night, Dark, and my camera did not pick up a good photo. But having a photo of an invisible object is better than not seeing it at all. (Read more here...)

Our Guest
She spends her mornings in our front yard
That's where the shade is in the mornings
Where the shade is in the afternoons
In the afternoons this duck's across the street
She's across the street where the shade is then
She drinks sprinkler water from the street
I worry about the water in the street
Has washed fertilizer from the soil
Fertilizer from the soil tastes not good
She drinks it anyway that's all she's got
All she's got but needs it for her eggs
She'll hatch them in a shadow box nest
Her chicks after they're born will leave the nest
She'll spend her mornings in our front yard again

Starts with 'D': Duck starts with "D". One Muscovy Duck hen has left her flock along running water stream to make a nest up here in our neighbor's second story shadow box above their garage.
I don't know if she'll try for 14 to 18 baby ducks to hatch or not. The neighbor said there are only two eggs, that was three, but he found a third smashed on the pavement below.
Do you know the incubation period for Muscovy Duck eggs is 35 days instead of all other ducks whose are about 28? Muscovy duck's eggs are also larger.
A Favorite: A 1984 Dodge 600 Convertible. One like this was my play car but it had a sad ending. I had it for several years, I bought it used, about six or eight years old, from the local dealers used car lot, and paid six or eight hundred dollars for it. It was in fairly low mileage and in good condition and had the 4-cylinder engine, with the Mitsubishi-built 2.6 L 4-cylinder which was available as an option. We drove it a lot, kind of all over the eastern third of Texas.
My car ended in repair shop, I'd taken it in for a leaking water pump and an overdue timing belt replacement. All done, the mechanic took it out for the evening. Drunk, coming home he totaled it out. He was jailed and didn't know us. The next morning I had a call seeing if my car was still own by me or was it stolen. The driver, the mechanic, was suspected of stealing it.
"D" for Dark (Tom's choice): Here at right is the picture of The International Dateline that I took from the flight attendants' window on our way home from Sydney, Australia. (Oh yes, the attendants had the exact time that we would be crossing so finding it was no problem, it was right below. Dah.)
Reflections and/or Street Photos/Candid Captures: The white glob in the window is an unwanted Reflection.
I was in the waiting room in my doctor's office taking a picture of I-10 feeder road, west out of Houston across the pond and didn't know of the glob until later. The water reflection was not so hot either because of ripples caused by the breeze.

A Favorite: Breakfast will be my favorite "B" word today. These are the Last Bites of my egg, cheese, and sausage croissant breakfast sandwich along with Tater Tots and coffee today at Burger King.
Tom's Choice, "Big": I wrote a poem Wednesday about a Big glob of snot, hanging. Read it here. It is clever but not pretty (my evaluation).
.Reflections and/or Street Photos/Candid Captures: A Bad Year for the animal life. The Bird standing near the edge in the right of the picture is a Blue Heron.
You can see how our lake, in 2006 was filled up, not with water but with weeds. This is the spectacular Lake Conroe. Our dam had been fixed after Hurricane Rita destroyed a major portion of it last summer. FEMA helped with $1.x million. It just didn't rain all the summer.

My photos and Writings are of "A" words, "Ahead", "Along", and "After", as seen in these photos taken through a vehicle's (tour bus) window.
Starts with "A": Ahead starts with "A". Ahead of us on Main Street of a small town, on our way to Corleone, Italy, was this heard of sheep being driven through town.

Tom's choice, '"A"long': Along the road, beside the road, were these vultures gathered here to visit a deer that was killed by a car.

"A" Favorite: After we had gone and now came back, this Heron was sitting no more. Only a pile of feathers and perhaps some bones remained for us to see when we returned a few days later.
I dabble in writing poems, many are posted on my other active blog, a few are here. This poem was my tribute to this brave creature:
The Friend I Miss
We met there on the bridge one early morn
Admired your beauty always when I passed
Always thinking of the hard life you had
Friend my dear I miss you now very much
You've gone away I'm guessing in the morn
You were laying there lifeless on the side
Brave, you died a death you never deserved
Each time I pass I pause and wonder why
I miss the sight, you watching for a bite
Did you have a family I'll never know
No grave no flowers just a few will mourn
Count me one to ponder each time I pass

Reflections and/or Street Photos/Candid Captures: Another "men's restroom" photo, this one was taken at our doctor's office building. It is totally touch free, no pun intended. All is operated by the nearness of a human. Got to touch the water and the towels though to get washed of. Haha.
From left to right:
The urinal flushes when the fellow moves away;
(not pictured to the left, so does the sitting place);
The soap dispenser operates when the hand is near;
The water faucet squirts when body is close;
Another soap dispenser for the other sink;
The towel dispenser when the hand is near; and finally,
The door opens when a hand is waved near this trigger.
Not mentioned is the selfie of me in the left side of the mirror Reflection. The photo is tilted, sorry but to straighten it the door activator gets cut off. I only took this one picture.
Without a doubt I'm giving this Rest Room a grade of five plus (5+). You can see my other Rest Rooms Ratings, by clicking here. (Not real good, I must get busy and do some others. Promise,)
