Starts with "U": Up starts with "U". Guys, never, never, leave the seat Up. (Some like the top lid up, bottom down. Makes for a rush relief faster.)
Tom's choice, "Utility": Pickup trucks are Utility vehicles. When they appear with a car front and a hauling bed behind, example, the Ford Ranchero, the Australians and New Zealanders call them Utes.
The one above is a VW Ute we found while walking in New Zealand. We arrived very early in the morning for our cruise, Aukland, New Zealand to the bottom of NZ, then over to Tasmania, Australia, and up to Sydney. So we spent the morning examining the central NZ opposite of Aukland.

A Favorite: Another Utility Vehicle that we found in Lisbon, Portugal. This is a Citroen 2CV Food Truck find in Lisbon, Portugal while we were visiting there in November. I bought an Ice Cream Bar from the owner. I couldn't find this easily, but I think there may be another letter behind the "2CV" for trucks. The Citroen 2CV models were made from 1948 to 1990. A Collector Car now they are priced in the mid $25K's and up.

Starts with "N": New York City starts with "N". We enjoyed our visit back in 2008. We've been there a few other times, once we took our younger daughter back when she was in the fifth grade.
A Favorite: We liked the New York's "Hello Deli"; it was David Letterman's Favorite restaurant. And it was just around the corner from the Ed Sullivan Theater where his program was broadcast.
"N"ecessary: Taxicab's were Necessary in NYC. Of course most all here walk a lot, a lot of places we want are often far apart. And of course parking down town is very expensive and the taxis, busses, and the subway are very reasonably priced. Many families do not have a car, not needed.
Oh, yes. We didn't find our what the NYPD was parked here for.
Lagniape #1: Cathy Lee was being interviewed out here in NBC's patio.
Lagniape #2: Nice horses were pulling the carriages through NYC's Central Park.

Our long and winding walk on New Year's Day (five years after New Year of the part above) New Zealand, down the hill (we paid for a ride up) took us through the Wellington Botanical Gardens. The flowers were in bloom (their January 1 in the Southern Hemisphere is like our July 1 here) and all was cared for very well. This family seemed to be enjoying themselves.

Letter "M" -- Friday's Weekend Roundup 11 and Reflections and-or Street/Candid Captures

What do she and our family have in common?

The young lady is 6 feet 4. Her 49 inch legs, from thigh to toe, may set a world record. For sure for Houston they did and probably are a record in Texas also. Things are bigger in Texas.
For sure too she would intimidate me if we were alone in an elevator. Ladies who are taller than me worry me.
Street/Reflections: Our 2012-13 New Zealand Princes cruise ended up with us being in Sydney, Aus. We had a wonderful three and a half days there.

Starts with "M": "Minutes" to get downtown Houston in a morning with a average good traffic. We live in Katy on the left, I-10 with 44 Minutes. "Houston is the fourth larges city in the United States."
A Favorite: Houston Methodist Hospital West front entrance, scale model. Many nice cars, several old, toy cars. Perhaps I should will them mine, 27 or eight, plus a motorcycle, last count.
"Mini": Mini Skirts were the rage long ago, back then ladies liked to show off their pretty long legs. (even Mrs. Jim had one).

Letter "U" -- Friday's Weekend Roundup 10 / Reflections and-or Street/Candid Captures

Starts with "U": "U" will be for Umbrella today. Last year there were three, these two shortened type but I lost my black one, left it on a bus in London,, and now I use the one on the right.
It was Mrs. Jim's, but it became tricky to open so we got her a new one like the tricky one. Now I use the older one instead of buying a new one.
Her newer one has identification stickers, one is on the handle's end, you see the white glob on the end.
A Favorite: I hope you won't accuse me of being vane by posting a photo of myself. But it is my favorite. We, Mrs. Jim and I, were on the Sydney, Australia, ferry that goes around to the other side of Sidney peninsula. The bridge takes one over
to an Island (??) to the north.
James' request, Reflections: Don't say a muddy puddle won't give off a Reflection. I was at the back of our library and noticed this mother duck herding her eleven baby ducklings over for a swim. According to our newspaper this was the first time to come to Texas after a four-year hiatus.

Colour my World -- a Poem for Tuesday
Composing with Color
Why do I use broken crayons to write
Colors in small pieces I've lost their names
Their wrappers are gone they're no longer proud
Now looking dull still for me they'll wax bright
It's for those bright hues on paper they leave
I'm inspired to fashion my morning thoughts
Evening ones too, even in midday's heat
Mournful sticks colorful hues they invoke
That the color shows through to those who read
That their thoughts and dreams can depart this world
Mono-colored and ugly bit brightened
My hope for them those broken crayons bring
"Thanks" to those small naked pieces of wax
You have lightened the young and old and me

Letter "A" -- Friday's Weekend Roundup 10 / Reflections and-or Street/Candid Captures

Starts with "A": Airplane starts with "A". Mrs. Jim flew in this little yellow plane the last time she flew private. It is a surplus rescue, a T-34 Trainer ( Wikipedia ) that is now giving rides to plane and flying enthusiasts. I'm not sure what year she flew, the T-34/5 planes were grounded in 2004 but eased back into use later.
She flew front seat and had the duty of putting down the landing gear. The pilot was in back, they flew over the Galveston Beach that ran maybe twenty miles down to the west of the city. They did barrels and loops with the top open.
I had gotten her the ride for one of her earlier birthdays. It was worth every penny seeing her sooo happy. Mrs. Jim's older brother had died flying his P38, shot down on a bombing run over Italy. Her younger brother also crashed his plane, an experimental, with his feet forward but survived and mended, his legs look like zippers.
Tom's suggestion, "Ample": In this old butter churn are the marbles that I have salvaged from my childhood, eighty some years ago. Some I believe were Agate marbles (Bing Search), I have not sorted them for a several years.
Ample in Number to make the churn look nice. It was used mostly by Mom, she made butter for our family. We now have it sitting on the guest room bedside table. Later Dad sold cream to the creamery in town and we were given butter and buttermilk for free.
A Favorite: This is Amber, our grandcat. Amber stayed with us while our daughter was in London working. She and her family stayed there five years, Amber was to die in 2013, before her regular boss lady came back to Texas. Read more of Amber here,

Reflections and/or Street Photos/Candid Captures: This lightened twilight photo is part of our green space build for Flood Control. It is two blocks to the south of our home. We walk quite often, it goes for miles, you can see one of the concrete walking paths under the trees to the upper left. Out of sight the path loops to the left and returns on the other side of the little stream.
We used to walk long distances but now at our ages we don't walk so far. Doctors' orders, Mrs. Jim's and mine, independently, suggested that we walk for thirty minutes five times a week. We give honest tries to do this. Mrs. Jim's breathing therapist suggested additionally that we climb a flight of stairs every two hours during the day.
Called the "Cinco Ranch Trails" (Cinco Ranch Subdivision, Katy, Texas) Pere the site (URL), "Get to know this 13.5-mile loop trail near Katy, Texas. Generally considered an easy route, it takes an average of 3 h 57 min to complete. This is a very popular area for road biking, running, and walking, so you'll likely encounter other people while exploring."
One reader's comment on the site above,
"This trail can be customized for the distance that you prefer to walk. There are many parts that combine to make the 13+ miles. Most of these trails are single trails totaling approximately 1.5 to 2 miles each. I normally add 2 or 3 of these together. The only downfall to this place is the lack of trail markings. You could easily miss a turn and accidentally extend your hike if (you're) not familiar with the area. All walkways are paved."

Yes, I remember those crayons, I didn't like them at all. I liked new unused crayons. But of course you are right, "they'll wax bright." Your poem colors the world bright.

ReplyDeleteYou had me right at the first stanza - what a way to just stop and swoop in and see the beauty for what it is, less than picture perfect - but whoop! it takes the brave heart and curious mind to say, hey, grab me this and let's play anyhow - because any colour is better than none at all.

Colors have a way of extending its kaleidoscopic hues to dampen sadness and loneliness. If only one gives time for its presence, it is a good pay-off!

The sadness of crayons for me was that favorite colours wore down too quickly leaving me with greens and browns (which I dare not use) with my colour blindness problem lest I be laughed at. It didn't help as they laughed anyway with seas and sands and skies but no trees or bushes or leaves anywhere!
