Letter "O" -- Friday's Weekend Roundup 11 and Reflections and/or Street/Candid Captures
This Week's Prompts Starts with "O." A Favorite. "O"ne. Reflections and/or Street/Candid Captures.

Starts with "O": Onions, they are a part of many of my recipes. I was pretty proud of this sandwich. Mrs. Jim was having eggs and grits for lunch. I opted out of those although she volunteered to hard boil an egg for me with hers if I wanted. I wanted.
Before the egg was finished I had decided that I would like an egg salad sandwich. I said that I would make her one also but she stuck with having her beloved grits. (Note: I had my first serving of grits at a Holiday Inn restaurant where I was staying when I first came to Houston from a three year duty with my company, Philco Corporation)
My Ingredients, yours may vary:
- One hard boiled egg
- One hot dog bun
- A piece of onion, One large purple plum, One teaspoon tartar sauce, Mayo as needed for consistency (I used light), One teaspoon yellow mustard if you want, I did not, Salt and Pepper, I used a couple of pinches each.(mix all these together and make the consistency suit yourself by the amount of mayo and mustard
My Ingredients, yours may vary:

- Other items that you yourself would add to make a deviled egg or egg salad can be used
- Two fairly large Romaine lettuce leaves
I cut the center out of the hot dog bun to replace that part with my egg salad. Dice the egg and onion into fairly small pieces, the fruit into larger. Put in the lettuce, add the salad. Yummy!

A Favorite: This little Hibiscus has been having a pretty bloom about one every other day, all spring and all summer. Once in a while it has two blooms at the same time. I took this picture from right our back door window, it is full length.
Growing in the box are seven little volunteer Vinca flowering plants that I rescued from being covered with the new mulch put on our flower beds. BTW, rabbits do not eat vinca plants or blooms.
Tom's choice, "One": One good great sandwich.
This was our supper the other night. Almost a sandwich, for the picture, Mrs. Jim had hers open faced, for mine I completed with a covering slice of toast to complete its being a sandwich. The French would call hers a "Croque Monsieur" with ham and cheese.
Ingredients: (makes two)
Two eggs
Four slices of deli ham
Four slices of cheddar cheese
Four slices of bread (Mrs. Jim's used only one)
Cooking and assembling:
Cook the eggs one at a time;
Open and stir the egg in a square bread slice sized microwaveable Pyrex type bowel (I should add to spray the vessel with vegetable oil, and cover the egg with a paper towel as it will likely pop a little-that doesn't hurt a thing)
Microwave 75 seconds at 60% power
(This was my supper the other night. Almost, the Mrs. has hers open faced as shown in the picture; I completed mine with a covering slice of toast to make the sandwich.
It takes about ten minutes to make for two.)
Flip them upside down
Layer the ham, then the cheese
Turn them right side up so that the pretty egg is on the top.
(I put a little ketchup on each bite when I cut it. For me, ketchup goes on a lot of things.)
Pronto!!

Reflections and/or Street/Candid Captures: My son, Tim, took this photo back in 2016 while at his work. He is a Boatman and had just untied this ship from the dock five minutes before.
The ship, leaving the Houston Ship Channel with its cargo, struck an obstruction in the water, leaking gallons and gallons of flammable liquid. Somehow the liquid floating on top of the water caught fire. Causes and damages are still under investigation when he gave me the photo. No life was lost.

A Favorite: Breakfast will be my favorite "B" word today. These are the Last Bites of my egg, cheese, and sausage croissant breakfast sandwich along with Tater Tots and coffee today at Burger King.
Tom's Choice, "Big": I wrote a poem Wednesday about a Big glob of snot, hanging. Read it here. It is clever but not pretty (my evaluation).
.Reflections and/or Street Photos/Candid Captures: A Bad Year for the animal life. The Bird standing near the edge in the right of the picture is a Blue Heron.
You can see how our lake, in 2006 was filled up, not with water but with weeds. This is the spectacular Lake Conroe. Our dam had been fixed after Hurricane Rita destroyed a major portion of it last summer. FEMA helped with $1.x million. It just didn't rain all the summer.

Letter "Q" -- -- Weekend Roundup

(A) Starts with the Letter "Q": A Quaint old truck belonging to a ham radio fellow, see his antenna at the back.
Question: Why is this old truck looking so Queer (starts with "Q")?
Answer: Because it is Quaint and has an antenna for mobile operation on top of the cargo roof.

(B) "Queen" (Tom's Choice): Our friends from Towcester, Northampshire, England, 65 miles NNW of London came to town to visit us. They explained that Queen Elizabeth would travel in her carriage through the streets to open Parliament for the then current session. They would show us a quiet place on the sidewalk to see her pass by. That was much excitement for us.
Not very original and neither is this post. It is a rework from one I did in 2013. Karen was to run the Paris Marathon (she finished!) on April 15th so cheering her on was our excuse for going to London and Paris at that time.
I wish we could go again this April but no family to visit now so that is open for discussion now. See more of this episode, click here, from my March 14, 2013 post, for my "Q" word Queen back then.

(C) A Favorite: My Quick yummy morning breakfast snack break is over. Mrs. Jim brought my coffee, the food was part of her breakfast doggy bag which she brought home from Monday.
A breakfast croissant with egg, ham, and cheese. I saved the top lid piece of the croissant for dessert and put gobs of strawberry Jam on it.
(D.1) A Lagniappe: Q-tip is a common compound word seldom seen in the blogs, not even for the "Q" word of the week. Guess I was pretty hard up. Please see the "Note" below for a rundown of the name. It must be properly protected or it will go generic. I believe this may be the case already. Time will tell.
So of what purpose is the lowly Q-tip? Men use it to hand pollinate the citrus plants, apply glue or paint in hard-to-get-to places, clean the wax out of their ears (I'd rather use the rounded edge of a paper clip), use it with alcohol or nail polish remover for cleaning up tiny spots, and--what am I leaving out for the guys?
But what in the world do women do with their Q-tips? They are the keepers, we men have to ask for one. Mrs. Jim had this one and another in the top drawer in the bathroom. She said she had a bag of them under the sink, but I didn't see them.
But what does she do with them? What does she use them for? Most ladies aren't brave or stupid enough to dare stick one in her ear. Nor does she build model cars or work with trains. My guess is that she uses them for tasks which men use their index finger but for which a women wouldn't dare use her finger.
Now, I am asking for the women reading this to tell me what they use the Q-tips, i.e. "cotton swabs", for.

The Letter "H" -- Weekend Roundup and Reflections
The thirty-fourth issue of Weekend Roundup for this year, 2020...
(THE EIGHTH LETTER FOR THIS SERIES)
- the Letter "H" Prompts are:
(A) Starts with the Letter "H";
(B) "Heavy" (Tom's Choice);
(C) A Favorite; and
(D) Reflections.

(A) Starts with the Letter "H": Heart starts with "H". This is my "Lite" daily breakfast, one half of a package of two Honey and Oats granola bars. Mrs. Jim has the other Half for hers.
The Saltine cracker oeanut butter filling is a midmorning snack that I eat as a stomach cushion for my midmorning pills, nine every other day, ten the other. Definitely not a Hearty Breakfast and Snack but they are Healthy.
(B) "Heavy" (Tom's Choice): Heavy, that would be a Hearty Breakfast. Some days at midmorning Mrs. Jim makes me pancakes and an egg, with my added sausage patty or link which I believe would be hearty. Ot an egg sandwich on toast with ham and cheese and ketchup.
I can make my own sandwiches, Mrs. Jim will get one also. I cook my egg in the microwave for 50 or 60 seconds at 70% power.
(C) A Favorite: How about a Sausage and cheese Kolache. That would Lighter, not being as Heavy as above.
Eating. They come warm from the bakery and we reheat them for eating leftovers on subsequent days. I cut mine open leaving the sausage all laying in one half, the other I fill with jam. Strawberry preserves today.
[BTW when I retired from the college, 22 years there, part of my going away present was a dozen of these rulers. Now after 19 years I still have two, this green and the other is orange. Don't envy me too much, I worked long and ?? hard. Three years at the Lincoln, Nebraska, Elgin Watch Factory, five years in the U.S. Army, and seventeen as a Ford Aerospace Engineer.]
We generally have one Kolache per serving although we buy them BOGO using the coupons at the right. Buy three, get three free. The coupons are on the back of our grocery receipts from the Kroger and H.E.B. stores.
We have three Kolache Factory stores within 4.1 miles, the one down the street from us is 1.1 miles.
They will do 'Dine in' again when COVID-19 comes to an end. Before that mostly I would come in and walk out. We can still do that but instead as I have become shy, I use the 'Drive through.'

Each night we returned to the ship which meant a nice breakfast and evening meal. Also we only had to unpack our suitcase once, at the ship."

This was before we set sail on our Viking River Cruise from Moscow over to St. Petersburg. It was previously posted with a summary post of our cruise. The Letter "E" ~~ Weekend Roundup and Reflections
Note: My Sabatical is over, It was a thirty day cruise from Dubai to Cape Town, we were gone from December 3 to January 10. We were aboard the Oceania small ship Nautica and stopped along the way. Mrs. Jim and I visited more UAE countries, Oman, four stops along India's coast, numerous Islands of the Indian Ocean, and four countries in South Africa.

The fifth issue of Weekend Roundup for this year, 2020...
(THE FIFTH LETTER FOR THIS SERIES)
- the Letter "E" Prompts are:
(A) Starts with the Letter "E";
(B) "Enormous" (Tom's choice);
(C) A Favorite;
(D) Reflections.

(A) Starts with the Letter "E": "Enjoy" the scenery as your houseboat chugs through the Back Waters of India. This one was out of Co Chin.
(C) A Favorite: Part of what Mrs. Jim was seeing from her dining room window. Look through the windows behind her, not very much was commercialized. Through the trees were a lot of rice fields. Note the lovely Reflection in the picture above.
(B) "Enormous" (Tom's choice): Now where did I lay my towel? Kind of problems one has when getting out of the tub. Especially if you are large and your tub is a mud puddle in the desert.
South Africa's Aquilla Game Preserve a ways out from Cape Town. All animals were rescue animals from the wilds of Africa. The employees were local town folk.
(D) Reflections: A Wall of Mirrors to greet you upon entering the dinning room on our ship, Oceania's small ship, the Nautica. What you were seeing was a part of the Excellent Christmas Brunch Buffet.

My Two Questions (you can answer just one if you'd like):
1. When was the last time you were riding on a boat (or ship)? An easy question for me, it was on our long cruise that we just finished. It was a thirty day cruise from Dubai to Cape Town, we were gone from December 3 to January 10.
2. What do you think of when we are discussing being "Enormous"? I think of e e cummings (link) and his autobiographical book, "The Enormous Room. It is the story of his four months during WWII, being incarcerated . He was bunked in a large room with 30 other prisoners (Link). I recommend reading, get it from your library.
Bonus Questions:
1. What is your favorite "E" word? This time it will be "Easy". That should be Easy for us retired people, Mrs. Jim makes a good example of how to do that, would you say from the picture above.
2. When will you, or did you already, retire? Mrs. Jim retired in 1999, I did two years later. I tell anyone who I think might listen that they should not wait too long. So many of my friends have waited so long that they die before or right after.

~~ Friday’s Hunt v.4.21 -- "U" is for ...
Friday's Hunt for the week of November 24th: 1. Starts with U; 2. mosaic/collage; and 3. “I ate this”Mrs. Jim's Brother and Sister-in-law visited us over the Thanksgiving Holidays. Both Mrs. Jim and her brother are LSU Alumni.
1. Starts with "U":
"U" is for "Uruguay", there on Mrs. Jim's Birthday, January 1, 2017
"U" is for "Under" -- "Under the 'balloon drop'". What do people do underneath a balloon drop anyway?

What do they do at the drop? First, they wait and wait. Then they look up or down on the balloons falling. Lastly, they stomp all the balloons until all are broken and the floor is ready for dancing. A few will save a couple to take home to show the kids.
2. mosaic/collage: I think this would make a beautiful Mosaic. I might try it.
This picture was part of the decorations on our cruise walls. It was for sale.
If you don't like this then try the Breakfast Dish below or the half eaten Texas Cinnamon Apple Fritter I picked up this morning. I am not particular. I hope our 'Teacher' isn't.
