Watching our College Football teams playing on TV makes my heart warm
Watching our family college teams playing football games is my favorite TV activity. Both my and Mrs. Jim's teams earned bowl games this year. Although LSU will be playing at Houston, we are undecided as to whether or not we will attend in person. ESPN TV will do a good job.

Men's Power Lunch — MidWeek Blues — Grant Teaff
Our Church has started having a Men's Power Lunches series. Monday, this week, our speaker was Grant Teaff, former head football coach at Baylor University.Grant has been in the College Football Hall of Fame since 2001. Around here he famous for having been the winningest coach against the University of Texas (at Austin) [Wikipedia article].
Of course I attended along with over 149 other men who dropped in during their lunch hour. I would say that less than half were members of our church, the First Baptist Church of Conroe, Texas (link).
Coach Teaff talked about how he encouraged football players to be the best they could be. At what ever assignment they held. As he talked he showed how to apply his teachings to our own lives. To be the best we could be. Teaff is famous for his jokes, I thought both funny and corny, which he liberally sprinkled on all us.
It is a wonder I don't have a picture of the delicious McKenzie's Barbecue plate I had. I must be getting old.
Take a look at the (BLUE) speaker schedule. I am sure you will recognize some of these. All of them will show up on Google Search, most will be in Wikipedia.
If you would be in town on any of those days remember that I have invited you to come. The lunch costs $10.00. Next time I will take a food picture but it might not be barbecue from McKenzie's.
Below is the speaker, Coach Grant Teaff.
He had been having them but when the assistant minister left to start his own church we stopped having them. A lot of the young people like this type of service with the loud music and praise songs. I like them too but then that isn't acting my age.
In January we plan to change the contemporary service back to Sunday mornings while one of the other services is going along.
Our pastor is Dr. Mark Dennison (picture link). He is fairly new to us since this Spring and has gotten off to a great start. He is a lot younger than me but we can communicate and relate fine.

Adi Can . . . . . . . . (and do an Awww Monday) . . . . . . . . pose with Harry Husker
The University of Nebraska Corn Huskers did win their (American) football game this Saturday, playing against the Baylor University team. I claim Nebraska on the basis of being an alumni because I attended there for three semesters. Later, eleven years of sitting out and eleven years of night school, I finished my schooling in Texas colleges.

They came down from Nebraska in droves and convoys. The average distance might be from Lincoln, Nebraska, to Waco, Texas, which would be 725 miles and about 11 hours of driving time. The roads are all Interstate Highway or equivalent.
The right picture I am showing the Baylor Marching Band who played to us at half time. Baylor has an excellent music department and a very good band. We are always impressed by Baylor. Oh, yes, I need to mention our daughter, Karen is a Baylor grad with a Bachelor of Business degree in Accounting. Of course that doesn't prejudice our thinking about Baylor's excellency one bit.

Just to show the teams right after the ball was snapped from the center to the quarter back see the picture on the left. It also shows how the Nebraska fans spread out in other sections of the stadium.
On the right is the traveling semi of the Nebraska team. It carries all the teams equipment and goodies. I have never seen this truck on the road but it looks like it should keep up with traffic quite well.

GO COUGARS!!! -- Ruby (Red) Tuesday -- My friend's new RED Ford Mustang
My friend has a new RED 2010 Ford Mustang GT. She likes it a lot. I think the inside is prettier than the outside. Those blue flaming/fanning stripes on the side don't add very much.
How about those University of Houston Cougars, my alma mater's football team? Ranked 12 and 15 for this week, depending on your favorite poll.

When the Storm Comes

Our storm this week is Hurricane Gustave. We were in Baton Rouge for the LSU/Appalachian State Football game Saturday (8-30-08). We are LSU fans, Mrs. Jim is a [Geaux (LSU)] Tiger. GEAUX TIGERS!
We won 41 to 13. I wish LSU had run the score up but they are an honorable team and they don't do that. Instead they let practically the whole team play when they get comfortably ahead.
We had very good south end zone tickets, on the fifth row.

Mike The Tiger is the LSU Mascot. He is rather young and here is liking his nap. I like my naps too! And I don't even have a $1 Million home to nap in.

After a very nice Cajun meal and a nice goodbye to Mrs. Jim's Baton Rouge widow cousin, we joined the New Orleans evacuation team. It turned out that I-10 West out of Baton Rouge was not crowded at all, the N.O. people wanted to go north, not west.
Before Lake Charles, Louisiana, we departed and took the lesser-traveled back roads. This morning we found out it was taking twelve (12) hours to travel from Lake Charles on to Houston. Our travel time was a total of seven hours with about one hours worth of stops for gas and a snack at McDonald's.

My plate: half of Mrs. Jim's shrimp poboy (link) and half of my fried catfish dinner. Missing? Yes, Brew Baker's does not have hush puppies. And today they were out of oysters already. But it was still all good. Mrs. Jim's cousin took half her catfish home in a doggy box for another day's eating.
Yes, God was good to us on this trip. We escaped the storm, avoided most of the horrible evacuation traffic, and saw us home safely in the middle of the night.
I believe this whole trip was enriched by realizing how good our God is, even during the storms. Just like the Disciples in the storm on Lake Galilee, Jesus had provided. Each had a basket of leftover fishes and loaves there with them in the boat (Matthew 14:20) But when they called Jesus, he even stopped the storm for them. (Jesus Walks on the Water)
We are enlarged by the storms when we can realize how good God is to us, even when the storms of life seem insurmountable.
