The Letter "F" -- Weekend Roundup and Reflections

The thirty-first issue of Weekend Roundup for this year, 2020...
(THE SIXTH LETTER FOR THIS SERIES)
- the Letter "F" Prompts are:
(A) Starts with the Letter "F";
(B) "Full" (Tom's Choice);
(C) A Favorite; and
(D) Reflections.
_ _ _ _

(A) Starts with the Letter "F": "Ford" begins with the Letter "F".  This is a picture of a 1941 Ford Pickup from my truck calendar for 2020.  I am not sure why my scanner did make me a color copy.

My Grandfather H. had a 3/4 ton 1941 Ford pickup that he used to haul his horses.  Grandpa had a male breeding horse that the neighbors would 'board' for a half day, more or less.  Sometimes I would ride with him when he was 'making rounds.'

The time I remember best was when my little sister, Lois, was born at home.  I was five and Grandpa came to our farm home to get me for riding.  He did sometimes take me for rides in his car also.
[click picture for larger size, click again for super sized]

I have owned three pickup trucks, a 1972 and a 1975 Datsun, and a 1986 Chevy S-10.  They all treated me right, I have the grill from one hanging in our garage.  I have not owned a Ford pickup, but many Fords (click list of cars I owned).

I worked for Ford Aerospace for 17 years and bought several as returns, one year old, from upper Ford executive perk rentals.  Those cars were two 1976  Granadas, a 1969 Thunderbird, and a 1974 Mustang II Ghia.  I bought from Ford new a 1967 Station Wagon and a 1972 Pinto.  Three of the cars,  the Pinto were totaled by the Tropical Storm Claudia flooding.

(B) "Full" (Tom's Choice):  This Coke Float makes for a Glass Full

(C)  A "Favorite":  My Feet across the room from our Fireplace.

I have been thinking about having another Favorite Foot Contest, could be a Pretty Feet, an Ugly Foot, or just plain Foot Contest.  But maybe not, I don't have nearly as many readers as I used to.  I could run it on Facebook too to get enough Entrants and Voters.

Maybe I won't have it.

(B)  "Full":  About Half Full of my boyhood marbles.  This is  the butter churn we used on the farm before we sold cream to the local creamery.  It sits on the night stand in our guest room.

A lot of my marbles were Hand-me-downs from telatives making them over one hundred years old.  The ones I  got with my money could be over eighty.

I didn't have other kids to play shooting marbles with and lose so i accumulated quite a few.

(D) Reflections:  I took the marbles in a churn pictires in the guest room bath.  The mirror is against the wall as is the shower beside the vanity.

It wasnt intended for a Reflection but it will be different than my usual ponds and buildings.  And lo and behold another with the mirror caught me as a selfie. [click picture for larger size, click again for super sized]

Weekend Roundup -- 07-18(b) (for letter "G")

The 33rd issue of Weekend Roundup for this year...
The week's prompts:
(1) Starts with "G"; (2) A Favorite; and (3) Great

(1) Starts with "G":  "G" is for Garden.  Above is a nice Garden Salad that our daughter made for Granddaughter KP's pool party, four of us with KP swimming.  It was for main course with all the pretty vegatables and then burrata  cheese for protein and dairy.  Summer late afternoon had just set in. Perfect for swimming.

Mrs. Jim's Garden is in our backyard.  At present she has one plant, a Basil plant.  We have used some leaves from it and have given more away.  It did get infected, in the picture at right you can see that the bottom stems now have no skin.  Some insect at them and left this mess.

I don't know what it is, if any reader can identify we would be happy..
[click on any picture for larger size viewing]
So if any reader can identify we would be happy.  I sprayed it good with "Captain Jack's Deadbug" and things got better.  The spray bottle says it "Kills bagworms, borers, beetles" and a host of other pesty folk in smaller print.

We generally use it for spraying beetles and bagworms on our lemon tree.  Both plants are showing next to the right fence in this picture below.  The lemon tree is the only thing besides flowers that grow in the rest of 'our' backyard "Garden".  I did plant some potatoes in the front flower bed.  One plant survived a rabbit attack.

 :
(2) A Favorite:   This is Mrs. Jim and I standing in front of the Giant Octopus.  The Giant was one of the Characters in the Pirate aka King David Study during the kids VBS (Vacation Bible School) at our church.
(3) week's word, "Great":   Aren't these some Great Feet !!!

Intro:They are sooo great, I have been very happy with them for most of my life.  The unhappy time I wasn't was when the right foot broke down,  That was right during my younger daughter's wedding. I was supposed to walk her down the isle, how could I do that one crutches?  Easy, the doctor said that I could put shoes on and walk on them but only going down the isle with the daughter.

My toes:  Here on the left, the hammer toe effect came about after our friend ran over my foot with her car, the back right tire and wheel rolled onto it and stopped (when I screamed, she stopped).  So while the car was standing on my foot, I had to convince her to drive on forward OFF my foot.

The right foot toes are webbed, the second with the middle toe.  The doctors would have cut them apart but my mother said not to.  My older daughter has these webbed toes as does her granddaughter.  The biggest problem is that because the second toe sits on the big toe, the nail area of the big toe because sore and inflamed unless I keep that part cut short.  The left foot toes are slightly webbed also

My arches are terribly flat.  That did not keep my out of the military service though.  Mostly my foot becomes tired easily.  While in college my right foot middle metatarsal broke after excessive marching as a part of my University of Nebraska Pershing Rifles (an ROTC military college fraternity) initiation hazing my second year of college.

Now with aging a buildup of cuticles grow under the nails, making them hard to trim.  Usually when that part becomes softened after a bath or shower.  That condition makes the cuticle a candidate for digging it out and throwing it in the trash.

My foot doctor wants to "rebuild" my foot but there's no way I will allow that unless it falls all the way apart or if I cannot walk on it.

Last of all is a beautiful foot contest or an ugly foot contest.  I generally with the latter but get an honorable mention for the beautiful foot.  If enough readers would ask, I might have another.  The first ones were sort of a bust (Link) ( "Foot" Link, my blog ).
- - - - - -

The end, that's all for tonight.

~~ Friday’s Hunt v.4.11 -- "K" is for ...

Friday's Hunt topics for the week of September 15th:
(1) Starts with K; (2) Stinky; and (3) Old.

(1) Starts with "K": "K" is for Kids.  Since Sunday was Grandparents Day our third-grader kid's classes hosted their Grandparents for lunch.  We went to KP's school, armed with a Chic-fil-A kid's meal, a chocolate milk shake, a Chick-fil-A chicken sandwich, a Diet Coke, and two small bags of chips, and had lunch with her.

This is our 4th year to attend, their having been back from living in London (U.K.) five years, again for now a fourth year of elementary school observation.

"K" for kid's grandparents also has the kid's learning about cataract surgery.  Mrs. Jim had hers this Wednesday.

And the Kids too worked with crews to dry houses after Hurricane Harvey.  Our help varied, mainly Mrs. Jim and I helped coordinate activities in our Sunday school class in providing prayer support for the victims, for the houses, and for the crews themselves, especially in the area of safety as far as electrical shock, cutting, fatigue, and overheating.

Additionally all three of us, Mrs. Jim, KP--we have been keeping KP for the last ten days, there was no school until Monday--and I one afternoon was spent repackaging and grading diapers into paper sacks holding 20 diapers.  Another afternoon, Mrs. Jim did wheelbarrow duty, hauling wallboard, wet insulation, and carpeting to the curbs at a house that needed drying.

Drying prepares a home for contractor work rebuilding. (In 1979 when our home flooded with 33 inches of water the Flood Insurance Program paid us $36,000 to rebuild outs.  Building costs have more than doubled now, and only 17-20% of Houston homes were covered by flood insurance as the price had gone way up.)

Below is a day's agenda for 12 crews to clean and dry 15 houses.  We are just about finished, there were 618 homes that were appealed to our church needing flood help according to the last figures given us to have our class pray for.  Additionally, "All work and no play makes Mrs. Jim a dull lady" works for certain at our home.  Her she is planning another cruise and looking at last year's which left from Los Angels and went around Cape Horn and back up to Rio de Janeiro.

(2) StinkyStinky Feet.  But our daughter and I do not have stinky feet, they smell like STRAWBERRIES.  Have ever since Karen was a little girl.

My sister's feet, my feet, and my old sandals.  Ugly foot contest?

(3) Old: My old Ford.  I've had several, but this was my last one, being hauled away to be with it's new owner.  A 1950 Ford Tudor.  That doesn't count Mom's 1974 Ford Mustang II Ghia of which I have had since Mom died back in 1999.  It is classified as a forty-three-year-old Classic here in Texas.

Well, anyway, here is a picture of it up on the flatbed auto hauler.  It does drive, but I never did except around the block when I bought it.  But I did drive it when I visited the new owner, even the overdrive worked.  I think it had 102K miles on it and was all original.  I hauled it back from Nebraska in 2007 but then I didn't know much of it's history.  Neither did the fellow I bought it from.

Note:  I have had another 1950 Ford Tudor, black like this on back in 1965.  It was sort of my hobby car, not club or anything like this time.  It also was original except for the dual exhausts.  A list of all my cars, http://jimmiehov.blogspot.com/2006/11/my-political-call-last-night-eight.html, at the end of the post.

Here is Mom's 1974 Mustang II Ghia.  I was the first owner, Mom wanted me to buy her a stick shift from the lease cars turned in for the Spring of 1975.  I worked for Ford Aerospace at NASA Houston then and some of our executives were encouraged to lease a new Ford every year.

Mom didn't trust the automatic transmission in the car Dad had purchased as she couldn't tell what gear it was in and was afraid it might be choosing the wrong gear at times.  This Mustang II and a hot rod Ford Torino were the only Fords that year with standard transmission.  She said, "Yes, get it for me" of the little down-sized Mustang.  That was the first year of downsizing for it.  It was built on a Ford Pinto chassis (we had a yellow 1972 model Pinto for our driver car--it was lost in our 1979 flood along with two other cars and a motorcycle).

~~ Friday’s Hunt v.3.16 -- "P" is for ...

Friday's Hunt for the week of April 21:  (1) Starts with P; (2) Week's Favorite; and (3) foot/feet

(1). Starts with "P":
"P" is for pills, the pills I take every day.  This in the end of my morning ritual of ten (10) pills between breakfast and lunch.  There are nine pills later on during the day.

Two of the morning's are prescription, one is a full strength aspirin, six are various vitamins and minerals, and three are digestive aids  My dctors and I think that all these pills are helping to keep me alive.

I need to have food with some of those so generally I have saltines and either peanut butter or cottage cheese, low fat or no fat, with my pills.
"P" is for Potato Salad. Mrs. Jim made some for us this week.

Sometimes Mrs. Jim tries to make Mom's and has just about gotten it perfected.  As far as we know hers was never written down, she just had it perfected and kept it in her head.

Mrs. Jim makes a delicious Potato Salad with her own experimenting as well.  One version has small apple slices in to give it a little crunch.  Always it has onions, sweet pickle relish, hard boiled eggs, and mayo.  I think she might put a little sugar in sometimes as well.

In the picture of my lunch plate you see lots of yellow mustard applied to the top.  My Rule No. 107 is never to mess with the cooks creations very much.  The cook in your favorite restaurant appreciates when you ooh and awe over his or her cooking.  But on the leftovers, Rule No. 107.a allows for a liberal application of mustard on Potato Salad.

(2) Week's Favorite:  This could have been the Potato Salad above, but too much has been going on for that.

Instead, this Week's Favorite was Easter and the pre-Easter preparations.  My pictures will be fairly self-explaining. [You can click on them to make them a tad bit larger.  My Picasa (free) program is not working well so that will be all the bigger I can make them at this time.]

Good Friday evening our daughter Karen and family invited Mrs. Jim and I over for Dinner, aka Supper. Above is the hors d'oeuvre hour yummies. She baked the Gougères (link) making them of Goat Cheese.  The eggs are candy coated chocolate eggs, in the other bowls are pop corn, potato chips, and mixed nuts.  On the tray was crackers and anther homemade cheese spread.

Seafood Bouillabaisse was our main dishIt is a French tomato based stew derivation with some vegetables.  Then Karen's for seafood had mussels, shrimp, and whitefish.

When Mrs. Jim is with Karen and KP we have a 'three generation' gathering.  By the time I took this picture we had all removed our crowns that were inside the crackers.

(Easter Crackers link)  On the Easter Table Crackers (they also make them for Christmas and just plain party table crackers) you have the neighbor on your right take one end and you take the other, in your right hand.  Then your neighbor on your left will offer you one end of his or her cracker.  One command every one pulls.  The thing pops when it gets pulled apart.

At the front of our house we placed the cross you see to the left of the entryway.  The letters are on the backside and the resulting white cross goes out Friday Evening.  Then on Sunday morning the sign is meant to be turned around showing the letters, "He is Risen!"  The smaller letters below say, "He is Risen Indeed!"  I brought the sign in Tuesday morning.

(3) foot/feet:  I have sometimes threatened to have a Pretty Foot contest or an Ugly Foot contest on my blog.  Then I will say that my right foot win the Ugly Foot contest and the right will win the Pretty Foot contest.  I do have several posts about feet or foot situations.  ( Links,  ,  )

Here are pictures of my feet today and one from another day (sideways view).  [You can click on the pictures to make them appear in larger size.]

- - - - - - . . . .

One:  Read your car feature

This person thinks a lot of his car.  What kind of a car do you think it is?  Answer will be here on down a bit.

I say "his" because how many ladies still use The Club for theft protection?  Did you ever use The Club?  I have one and still use it on my 1998 Mustang GT Convertible.  Like this man, I say no one ever has stolen it while The Club was on it.

This man goes to church every Sunday morning and is always n attendance on Wednesday nights for supper and the pastor's study period.  His car?  It is a 1986 Chevy Cavalier.  A picture of it is at the bottom of this post.

Two:  Ugly Foot Contest winner (link) revisited

Pretty feet?  These feet are still not very pretty.  But they are mine.

Up close, see right, you will see why they aren't so very pretty.  My right foot has semi-webbed toes. Click picture.

Three:  My favorite pick-me-up snack

This would be my yummy light or no-fat soda crackers with peanut butter concoctions.  I'll have one or two of these with coffee at mid morning.

When I play golf, I take five.  One or two with coffee while driving to the course.  Then one or two at about eleven for my quick energy boost, and I'll have what is left while driving home.

Oh yes, the cups are two of the set of eight that I rescued from a big box of assorted items.  Mom had a lot of these and Dad was putting them in the auction when he sold the house.

Mom had died about five years earlier and Dad was moving into an assisted living after he stopped driving.  Two of the cups have been broken so now I only have six.

Four:  I do my own wash--today I'm showing my outer clothes, next week it may be my sock and underwear drawer.

I washed all my clothes in one load this week.  Sometime I do two loads if I have a lot of clothes or have missed a week.

On the right are my dress short sleeved shirts, a long sleeved blue dress shirt, my every day shirts and a pair of blue Docker pants.  The every day shirts were the ones I wore at my teaching job before we went 'casual' for dress.

In the left picture hanging are my golf shirts.  Please note that they all have pockets.  I have a lot without pockets which I don't wear very often.  These are my faves.  Mrs. Jim had a white blouse drying in the back but it didn't bother me.

Five:  It ain't free if it costs

My Coke Rewards people e-mailed me telling me of a "Free MacDonald's Quarter Pounder" (hamburger).  I enjoy the free things that My Coke Rewards has given me.

So I clicked on the link and this is what I got.  My "Free MacDonald's Quarter Pounder" would cost me fifty points.

Oh yes, here is my friend's 1986 Chevy Cavalier.  Isn't it pretty.  He told me the mileage, it might still be in the 30,000's.  It was very low, I remember.  This man is in his high eighties.
