Starts with "G": What does the word "Gras" stand for in 'Mardi Gras'?  Answer:  highlight the blank area below 
Mardi is the French word for Tuesday, and gras means “fat.” In France, the day before Ash Wednesday came to be known as Mardi Gras, or “Fat Tuesday.”

This year Mardi Gras was on February 13.  Our younger daughter brought us these two small cakes as a Mardi Gras present.

A Favorite:  My favorite today will be Green 
Grasshopper.  I have forgotten where I found this green guy grasshopper.  Maybe in the Grocery store garden section?

Letter "I" -- Friday's Weekend Roundup 08 / Reflections and-or Street Captures

This Week's Prompts: Starts with "I." A Favorite. "I"nsect.  Reflections.

Starts with "I":  Isle of Man.  About one fourth of my blood line is from the Isle of Man, land where the cats with no tails are from (Manx), and the people are called Manx.  We visited in September of 2007.

The Isle of Man isn't a country so I can't put it on my list of countries we've visited.  It is a self-governing British 'Crown dependency,' not a country. (Wikipedia link)  It is located off the coast of Britain.  Though there is a ferry that goes there, we flew.  My Mom's side-grandfather's family came from the Isle of Man.  We visited it in September 2007 (prior blog posts).

The main thing we did in the Isle of Man was to go out North and South from Douglas, the capital city in the middle, where we stayed up to the north by train and then go to the south end via bus.  Lots of site seeing.  We did see evidence of the Corkhill family having been there.  One lady at the Information center in Douglas informed us that her maiden name was Corkhill.
    

A Favorite:  A Fairy Bridge, and Fairy Garden are on the road to the airport from Douglas. It is customary to say hello and goodbye to the Fairy as you pass. That brings good luck.

You can stop there to post a letter to the Fairy. Just leave it in his garden. Chances are if the letter contains a wish, the Fairy will make it come true.  


Tom's choice, "Insect":  What's in the dustpan?  These are the "see no bugs" of the Insect Variety "I don't see no bugs".  


This is the first time I had seen them, the other night.  Some of my meds I missed earlier and then were too close to bedtime ones.  So I opted to take them in the middle of the night when I was up for the little room.  

In preparation I made four half-soda-cracker pieces spread with PeanutButter and wrapped them up in a piece of paper towel.  After taking my meds I left the paper towel on the vanity and went back to sleep.  

In the morning when I came to wash up I saw many little, tiny brown bugs swarming on the paper towel.   They were on the underside of the towel also so I sprayed everything to the left of the sink.  

Soon I brushed them all up.  You are seeing the dustpan with some of the bugs and at the back is some fingernail clippings.

Moral of the story is "If you want to see the bugs of the 'I don't see no bugs' variety just leave a piece of sweet sticky paper towel on a flat place."  Then soon the place will be swarming with those little Insects. 


A Lagniappe and Reflection(??):  This was yesterday's Z I G G Y cartoon. It doesn't make sense to me.  Especially because I can't 'see' the purpose and time factor into a comic situation.  If you see please tell me why this is funny (besides being wierd) and help me with time and hurry fitting in.

BTW, Mrs. Jim. tried also but she didn't really make things sound better.

~~ Friday’s Hunt v.4.16 -- "P" is for ...

Friday's Hunt for the week of October 20th: 
(1) Starts with P; (2) Surprise; and (3) Looking up


(1) Starts with "P": "P" is for Perky.  Our Hibiscus was really perky today.  It has 12 or 13 blooms, outdoing itself. 

It's usual is 2-4, mostly three.  I know, by the time I took the picture only ten were showing.  Maybe you can count more.



(2) Surprise: It was a surprise this morning when I pulled the curtains back and, "Whoa!!  Surprise, surprise."

"Is this OUR back yard?"


(3) Looking up:  We enjoyed looking up at this giant spider.  It looks so real, it ought to animated for a scary Halloween movie.  It was in the Bentonville, Arkansas, Crystal Gardens entry way to the Art Museum.  An elderly lady was the Artist.  I don't know if she "Man Handled" the pieces for the welding (they were large and heavy).

~~ Friday’s Hunt v.3.24 -- "X" is for ...

Friday's hunt for the week of June 16th:  (1) Starts with X; (2) Week’s Favorite; and (3) Insect

 (1) Starts with X:  X's are hard to find. I did do some Flash writing on my other blog, my main character was named 'Xentor".  I actually quit before I hardly started, here are some of those, click.  This opportunity was available only on certain of Jenny's Saturday Centus days.  100 word posts with certain other restrictions were . (Saturday Centus posts)  About a year ago Jenny became ill and has almost stopped blogging.

KP was one of those descendants absent.  She was in San Antonio with a prior reservation.
The family picture was taken by a wait staff at the restaurant.  She wasn't the best photographer.

(2) Week’s Favorite:  Did you note that this "Friday Hunt" was done on Saturday?  Well last night we had a Father's Day dinner at my favorite gathering restaurant on 11th Street in the Heights of Houston. Berryhill's Mexican Restaurant.  

 Mrs. Jim and I shared chicken 'fajitas for one.'  Sorry no picture. Berryhill's is famed for its fish tacos. My say, "they are good but too messy."  To work around that I order them "dry" with the fish sauce on the side. That works.  And I can be judicious with the sauce's application. 

 Sixteen of our twenty-four were present. I noted that the fifteen of them that were here, all were my descendants, spouses of one, or steadily following one.

The nine others were accounted for; four were here in Texas having other commitments, two are in California/Arizona, two in Alaska, and one in Washington, D.C.


Some more pictures: Our oldest granddaughter's due date is less than a couple of weeks away.  She will add one more girl to our two girl "Greats" list. One boy, JP (link).

 (3) Insect:  June Bug. The little brown beetle who flies the night away, looking for a light. When, and if, it finds the light it spends the rest of the night worshipping that light. And then before daylight our June Bug dies.

 Several years back I blogged a feature, "June Bug of the Week." I didn't exactly give it that name. I had a running joke with Rachel that what she called a June Bug was actually not a June Bug as June Bugs are supposed to be brown. You will notice that NONE of these is a real June Bug. June Bug, June Bug! . . . No, its October Bug!

. October bug really isn't a bug at all. I found her climbing our wall by the back door. That is a brick she is clinging to, wedging herself against the door frame. I wonder where this creature is now? I hope she can find food and water. A lot of those little white bugs come to the window in the door every warm night, then they die there. I think she will have plenty of food to help her grow up fine. What will she look like when she grows up? I sure don't know. I don't even know what she is. Do you?

June Bug! June Bug! It's Brown, It's Brown! -- Blogdogs, Peas in a Pod?

Update: My June Bug Collection is over [please click] here. It includes a "BUG" for each month, every one of which, except this one for June, aren't really June Bugs. . . Until last night this was the only June Bug we have had this summer. It was in the dining room, just barely crawling along. After a couple of photo ops I released it; I really think it was done for. Most June bugs only live a short while. They come to the lights, fly around, and die. Of exhaustion? Maybe a heart attack? What color: brown, of course. Never green. Now it seems it all depends on where you came from as to what a true June bug is. Here's my kind (I'm a native Nebraskan):

Why until last night? Because last night another one came, bit the dust, and was lying on the back door mat this morning.

My Blogdog, Adi


First pea?


Now Adi is a real trouper. She goes with me almost everywhere, except when I leave the house. She goes outside with me, but not very often in the car, although she loves riding. Adi likes to be in my blogs, so far she has been mentioned in my blogs 82 posts since December, 2005.

As usal, while I'm blogging, Adi is right here with me. Tonight, in this picture, in the kitchen you will find us. Since we use a laptop, we might be most anyplace (remember this one?). The printer and scanner are in the bed room, so when I take the computer in to print or scan, Adi is in her bed in that room.



The bed you see goes with Adi wherever we are. In the car, it sits behind the passenger sear. When we are in the kitchen (or breakfast room) it is where you see it, under the breakfast room TV. When we are in the living room her bed makes it to between our recliners. If we forget to bring the bed,she lays in front of the couch on the rug.



Back to blogdogging. She is a buddy, more so, she is a watchdog. Look carefully, she is sleeping with one eye open. And her nose will twitch and ears perk up, just a little, if an event happens.



I don't hear the doorbell very good, Adi hears it real good. Either she will bark or run to the door to look through the glass window. One problem, she can't tell between some TV doorbells and the real one. It is a mystery to her how the TV bell can ring and no one is at the door.



Squirrels, yes, she sees them through the back bedroom window, just above her bed. Birds and cats too, or the neighbor's dog, don't escape her notice. If only, if only I 'd let her out.

It's June Bug!

No,

It's May Bug!!

And a lot of them!!

. . Remember the April bug? (link) Well, these are May bugs but they came early, a whole bucket we found, all those in the picture were here in April.

.

We do have a few June bugs now too, there aren't very many yet so the birds can eat them about as fast as they appear.

.

May bugs have another name, after the place they live in. You see they live in the mud and are also called mud bugs.

.

Southern people eat these mud bugs. They are boiled with a ears of corn and whole potatoes (enough for every eater to have at least one) and highly seasoned. The tail meat can be breaded and deep fried, put in etouffee (link) or gumbo, and a lot of other Southern dishes.

..

The best way to eat the boiled ones is to bite the head off and suck the juice out. Then split the tail and eat the meat that was inside. Some people dip the tail meat in cocktail sauce or tartar sauce.

It's June Bug! No, It's April Bug!!

[Originally posted April 21, 2006, at 1:38 AM] . [click picture to enlarge] This April bug had a lot of babies. They all came running away when I squashed their mommy. I got most of the babies squashed too. There were two real June bugs (brown) on the porch tonight. They are early, a lot will come in June. So for now, we have mostly April bugs like this one. We will be glad when May comes, our May bugs are rather nice unless one bites somebody. I forgot to add, since this is Texas, our April bugs are larger than elsewhere, unless they emigrated. Do any of you have a few of our Texas April bugs at your place? ..[click this fellow to enlarge the picture]
