Mardi is the French word for Tuesday, and gras means “fat.” In France, the day before Ash Wednesday came to be known as Mardi Gras, or “Fat Tuesday.”

This year Mardi Gras was on February 13. Our younger daughter brought us these two small cakes as a Mardi Gras present.

A Favorite: My favorite today will be Green
Grasshopper. I have forgotten where I found this green guy grasshopper. Maybe in the Grocery store garden section?

Letter "I" -- Friday's Weekend Roundup 08 / Reflections and-or Street Captures
This Week's Prompts: Starts with "I." A Favorite. "I"nsect. Reflections.

Starts with "I": Isle of Man. About one fourth of my blood line is from the Isle of Man, land where the cats with no tails are from (Manx), and the people are called Manx. We visited in September of 2007.
The Isle of Man isn't a country so I can't put it on my list of countries we've visited. It is a self-governing British 'Crown dependency,' not a country. (Wikipedia link) It is located off the coast of Britain. Though there is a ferry that goes there, we flew. My Mom's side-grandfather's family came from the Isle of Man. We visited it in September 2007 (prior blog posts).
The main thing we did in the Isle of Man was to go out North and South from Douglas, the capital city in the middle, where we stayed up to the north by train and then go to the south end via bus. Lots of site seeing. We did see evidence of the Corkhill family having been there. One lady at the Information center in Douglas informed us that her maiden name was Corkhill.
A Favorite: A Fairy Bridge, and Fairy Garden are on the road to the airport from Douglas. It is customary to say hello and goodbye to the Fairy as you pass. That brings good luck.
You can stop there to post a letter to the Fairy. Just leave it in his garden. Chances are if the letter contains a wish, the Fairy will make it come true.
Tom's choice, "Insect": What's in the dustpan? These are the "see no bugs" of the Insect Variety "I don't see no bugs".
This is the first time I had seen them, the other night. Some of my meds I missed earlier and then were too close to bedtime ones. So I opted to take them in the middle of the night when I was up for the little room.
In preparation I made four half-soda-cracker pieces spread with PeanutButter and wrapped them up in a piece of paper towel. After taking my meds I left the paper towel on the vanity and went back to sleep.
In the morning when I came to wash up I saw many little, tiny brown bugs swarming on the paper towel. They were on the underside of the towel also so I sprayed everything to the left of the sink.
Soon I brushed them all up. You are seeing the dustpan with some of the bugs and at the back is some fingernail clippings.
Moral of the story is "If you want to see the bugs of the 'I don't see no bugs' variety just leave a piece of sweet sticky paper towel on a flat place." Then soon the place will be swarming with those little Insects.
A Lagniappe and Reflection(??): This was yesterday's Z I G G Y cartoon. It doesn't make sense to me. Especially because I can't 'see' the purpose and time factor into a comic situation. If you see please tell me why this is funny (besides being wierd) and help me with time and hurry fitting in.
BTW, Mrs. Jim. tried also but she didn't really make things sound better.

~~ Friday’s Hunt v.4.16 -- "P" is for ...
(1) Starts with P; (2) Surprise; and (3) Looking up
(1) Starts with "P": "P" is for Perky. Our Hibiscus was really perky today. It has 12 or 13 blooms, outdoing itself.
It's usual is 2-4, mostly three. I know, by the time I took the picture only ten were showing. Maybe you can count more.
(2) Surprise: It was a surprise this morning when I pulled the curtains back and, "Whoa!! Surprise, surprise."
"Is this OUR back yard?"
(3) Looking up: We enjoyed looking up at this giant spider. It looks so real, it ought to animated for a scary Halloween movie. It was in the Bentonville, Arkansas, Crystal Gardens entry way to the Art Museum. An elderly lady was the Artist. I don't know if she "Man Handled" the pieces for the welding (they were large and heavy).

~~ Friday’s Hunt v.3.24 -- "X" is for ...
Friday's hunt for the week of June 16th: (1) Starts with X; (2) Week’s Favorite; and (3) Insect
(1) Starts with X: X's are hard to find. I did do some Flash writing on my other blog, my main character was named 'Xentor". I actually quit before I hardly started, here are some of those, click. This opportunity was available only on certain of Jenny's Saturday Centus days. 100 word posts with certain other restrictions were . (Saturday Centus posts) About a year ago Jenny became ill and has almost stopped blogging.
(2) Week’s Favorite: Did you note that this "Friday Hunt" was done on Saturday? Well last night we had a Father's Day dinner at my favorite gathering restaurant on 11th Street in the Heights of Houston. Berryhill's Mexican Restaurant.
Mrs. Jim and I shared chicken 'fajitas for one.' Sorry no picture. Berryhill's is famed for its fish tacos. My say, "they are good but too messy." To work around that I order them "dry" with the fish sauce on the side. That works. And I can be judicious with the sauce's application.
Sixteen of our twenty-four were present. I noted that the fifteen of them that were here, all were my descendants, spouses of one, or steadily following one.
The nine others were accounted for; four were here in Texas having other commitments, two are in California/Arizona, two in Alaska, and one in Washington, D.C.
Some more pictures: Our oldest granddaughter's due date is less than a couple of weeks away. She will add one more girl to our two girl "Greats" list. One boy, JP (link).
(3) Insect: June Bug. The little brown beetle who flies the night away, looking for a light. When, and if, it finds the light it spends the rest of the night worshipping that light. And then before daylight our June Bug dies.
Several years back I blogged a feature, "June Bug of the Week." I didn't exactly give it that name. I had a running joke with Rachel that what she called a June Bug was actually not a June Bug as June Bugs are supposed to be brown. You will notice that NONE of these is a real June Bug. why do five out of six June bugs die laying (lying) on their backs with their fat stomachs straight up?
Research on this matter might find a cure for cancer or aids. Who knows? Perhaps the cool-aid drinkers (Bill O'Reilly term) will pick up the cause.
All insects have three pairs of legs.
That means each June bug must wear three pairs of shoes.

So my writing starts:
Six worker June bugs
they died on the job, making a tunnel through the rock wall
why do five out of six June bugs die laying (lying) on their backs with their fat stomachs straight up?
Research on this matter might find a cure for cancer or aids. Who knows? Perhaps the cool-aid drinkers (Bill O'Reilly term) will pick up the cause.
All insects have three pairs of legs.
That means each June bug must wear three pairs of shoes.
These workers were not wearing shoes.

Once upon a time the land was invaded by hordes of June bugs. These bugs quickly overtook the human race and most of the animals. A few animals they trained for manual labor tasks. But when the animals died of an epidemic, the June bugs had to fend on their own.
They had always been jealous of the human's ability to travel. Very quickly they developed automobile transportation. Their vehicles were modeled after the Tootsie Toy fleet vehicles. Most every boy and many of the girls had scads of these little toy cars, all of which were converted to become the first iteration of electric motor transportation.
These electric vehicles called the Bugs' Bug had become popular almost overnight. They had discovered that the German built Volkswagen Bug was called the People's Car and now they had their own which they dearly loved.
But with the onslaught of the newly built Bugs' Bugs models a problem surfaced, one that seemed insurmountable. There were no Tootsie Toy Bug's Bug sized roads. They could not tear down the people's houses and buildings and it would take too long to go around them all. And of course they could not go over.
Tunneling must be done so the Bugs could go under and through these monster-like existing structures. They had not yet developed jack hammers and hydraulics so manual labor was the order.
The Bugs had not heard the old saying, "this is killing us!" But with their vegetarian diet they lacked the ability to work hard all day chiseling away at the rocks and stones and other structural materials. They died by the millions, generally a work crew of six at a time.
They lacked the ability to bury their dead or to cremate. Soon the plague took over the land and they all died off. No longer did they die six at a time but now by the kazilions. Most all laying on their backs, naked with no shoes; according to statistics, five out of six always die that way.
Time will tell, who if anyone will gain control of the earth.
Will God see fit to recreate man? If so, will he be the new improved model?
Author's note: The real answer to that last question is NO. By God's definition, man is made in the image of God. [Genesis 1:27 -- "So God created man in His own image; He created him in the image of God; He created them male and female."]

New grandchild picture — Six Word Saturday — June Bug srikes again!

By now most of you readers know KP, our grandbaby KP. Here she is all ready for a taking a walk with her mother, Karen. This was not taken at the beginning of their eight plus mile walk. No, it was in the middle. Karen said she was still smiling at the end too!
Their destination was four plus miles away. When they reached this place they refreshed and headed back. Since this is Spring break, KP took a break day from her nursery school and Karen took a break from her work. It all was for a fun day in the Texas sun.

June Bug . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Yes, it's June, 2008, bug
At our house, the only good June bug is a dead June bug.

These brown June bugs fly around at night and are attracted to the lights. Especially in the spring here in Texas they are very prevalent.
This one was found the morning after, on March 31, 2008, laying dead on our back porch. Texas June bugs come earlier than in most places. Most places they come in June, hence their name.
The evening before we could hear just a whole lot of them running into the windows, attracted by the lights inside our house.
One last thing, Texas June bugs are about an inch long, a lot of places they don't get nearly that long.
