The Letter "Y" -- Weekend Roundup and Reflections

The fifty-first issue this week of my WEEKEND ROUNDUP postings and ... (THE TWENTY-FIFTH  LETTER FOR THIS SERIES) - the Letter "Y" Prompts are: (A) Starts with the Letter "Y"; (B) "Yellow" (Tom's Choice); (C) A Favorite; (D) Reflections; and (E) A Lagniappe.

(A.1)  Starts with "Y"  Year starts with the letter "Y".  This is Mrs. Jim's Christmas Cactus blooming very nicely for Christmas This Year, the best it's bloomed so far.   

(A.2) Starts with "Y":   YVNE Starts with the letter "Y".  YVNE is ENVY spelled backwards and is spelled by the little duck in the bottom right of this card.  Had we exchanged BDay cards this year this is the one she would have picked for me.  My birthday was in October.

I had seen a rack with Yellow Stocking Hats at the Love Truck Stop station where we parked going to Baton Rouge Wednesday, see my last picture below, but when I came out of the Men's room I discovered that I had left my smart phone camera in the car.  

So no Yellow Stocking Hat picture this year, probably none ever ever. 


(B.1) "Yellow" (Tom's Choice):   I saw this Yellow Jeep and turned around in the lane to get its picture. 


(B.2)  I followed this Yellow Camaro a bit yesterday.  Just about the time I went into a parking lot to take a picture of the Yellow Jeep above the Yellow Camaro got into the left turn lane and I could have been beside it for a better picture.

(C) A Favorite:  Adi, my Beagle Dog, will always be my favorite.  She was Young when I got her from our daughter, we soon became buddies, even so far as forming a Pet Therapy Team together.  She is also a co-writer on this blog (Adi's meme ).  Adi died in 2013 of old age.


(D) Reflections:  Sorry,  there isn't a reflection picture here.  But I think they aren't appreciated very much anyway by the other folk posting them.  They really don't visit around.

(E) A Lagniappe.  Mrs. Jim's 100-year-old cousin Mary died this Monday.  Her funeral was this Thursday in Baton Rouge.  It is 298 miles from our house in the west near I-10, so we stayed there overnight Wednesday as it was too far to drive early in the morning and then back that same evening.

Mary was still driving, teaching her Sunday school class, and nurturing her neighbors with her friendly manor, her help for them, and for being a nice friend.

Bonus Questions:

(1)  What would you say that the average lifespan in years runs in your family? "Do you have an expectation?"   My father lived to be 97, Mom died at age 89, my average of these two would be at 93.  I had expected to be blind by age 85 but I now think that won't happen, possibly older still though.

(2) What is your favorite Word with an  "Y"?  Mine today will be "either 'You' or 'Yogurt'", I really do like "Yellow", especially on motor vehicles to watch, not to own.  But since Tom requested that we use it and that I have used it several times before as my "Y" Word I will skip it for this year.  I am not a big Yogurt eater, I'd rather have ice cream, but I do like for You to be reading my blogs.  Right now I am running

Weekend Roundup -- 18-18(b) (for letter "R") -- Reflections too

The 44th issue of Weekend Roundup for this year..
The week's prompts:
(1) Starts with "R"; (2) A Favorite; (3) Red; and (4) Reflections
 

(1) Starts with "R": "Real" starts with "R".  These are Real Brach Candy Corns that I bought for National Candy Corn day on October 30.  That day is also my Birthday, I am not telling my age. The Real ones cost twice as much as the store brands do.

(2) A Favorite:  Red Velvet is my Favorite kind of cake. I received an email offer of a Free Red Velvet cupcake for my Birthday as it came up again on October 30th.

You can see what is left of a dozen Bundt mini-cakes that our daughter brought us in the evening.  It had a column of Red Velvet cakes, one is still left.  After opening my present we each, KP, Karen, SIL Bill, Mrs. Jim, and each I had one.

When we signed up to be on their emailing list one of the blanks required us to tell our birthday, Day and Month.  The Bundt cake bakery is across the street from our library and around the corner.


(3) Red: For my birthday our daughter, Karen, gave me four Marriot Hotel bottles of candy.  Two were full of Red "Hot Tamales", Hot Cinnamon Candies. 


(4) Reflections:   This is the inside of our front door.  The glass is reflecting the Jack-O-Lantern I had sitting inside on the hall table.  Through you can see the Porch outside from where the Trick or Treaters rang our door bell.

There was a tall light directly above the plastic pumpkin and it also reflected in the bottom of the lantern making it seem there was a candle burning inside.

I was the candy man as Mrs. Jim was still recovering from her bunion surgery and could put no weight on her left foot.  My candy, Red Wrappered KitKat Bars, were inside this pumpkin.

~~ Friday’s Hunt v.2.18 -- "R" is for ...

Today was my birthday and so I missed Teresa's sign-in cutoff.  We got in tonight about a couple of hours ago from Baton Rouge, no Internet at cousins where we were visiting, and I am just now writing my "R" post. 

Since I had started on this last Thursday (we left on Friday and were still on the road back Sunday evening) I will go ahead and post.  Just can't sign in for Teresa.

I will post a few birthday pictures next week.  Saturday night we attended Sandy Patty's final U.S. tour at Baton Rouge. It was good, uplifting, and LOUD!

Friday's Hunt for the week of October 28th:  (1) Starts with "R";  (2) Week's Favorite; and  (3) Black and/or Orange.

(1) Starts with "R":  "Red" starts with "R". 

First is KP's Banjo.  This was a school project for her to make after the class had studied musical instruments and HOW the sound is made.  KP opted for a stringed instrument, the Banjo.

One part was to make it, better if it made sound.  She was also supposed to tell directions for making an instrument like she had made.  Hers is made from a Graham Cracker Box, a dah tah dah tube and four rubber bands.  Her artistic talent went into the decorations.  (Directions Galore are to be found on-line.)

Her grade showed the work and preparation was paying off.

The second is a couple of Christmas Tree Decorations we found at the World Market store near us.  Red Cardinals and a Toy Red Vacation Camper.



(2) Week's Favorite (not):  Thursday before we left for Baton Rouge I went for a scheduled CT Scan with and without dye.  I was to come to Houston Memorial Hospital, Katy Hospital, an hour before my appointment.

This turned out to fill out papers and to drink this solution a half hour before my appointment.  It looked like water but had electrolytes and other stuff.

I was asked whether I wanted 'peach tea' or 'lemonade'.  I opted for lemonade.  That made drinking it easier. 

The marking on the bottom?  I was to save that part until I had an IV Port placed in my arm.

I should get results tomorrow from the hospital (only 20 minutes away).  Then I will call my GP doctor and after that another specialist who is looking for me to come in for a visit and a procedure.


(3) Black and/or Orange:  This was a yard decoration on KP's street.  We see lots of Orange and matching colors when we walk her to or from school.  Come November 1st, they will all be gone.

— My Alphabe-Thursday, Xenogamy — "X" — Things in a Row — Two Questions —

Question: What do you get when you cross a sunflower with a moonbeam?

Answer: A very short yellow sunbeam  sunset.

Xenogamy defined: "The term xenogamy (along with geitonogamy & autogamy) was first suggested by Kerner in 1876.[2] Cross-pollination involves the transfer of pollen grains from the flower of one plant to the stigma of the flower of another plant. KP and BP's other grandfather John (BIL Billy's father) develops his own variety of hybrid roses by using selective cross pollination.  Some he has patented.  All of his roses in his garden are beautiful.

My Sunset picture:  It was a pretty sunset over the lake with pink sky and red sun. But my camera (a Sony Cyber-shot DSC W560) red eye fixer 'fixed it'. There was such a pretty red sun that should have been in the middle of this picture when I took it from inside our friend's house at her breakfast room table.

Pumpkin Things in a Row I found at the Waitrose Supermarket, Finchley Road, London.  Mrs. Jim bought one of the small pumpkins for £.99 to make the jack-o-lantern in the picture below.  We have been using it as a center piece on the dining table now for a week.

The middle picture was the candy row dedicated to Halloween and the one on the right was a fireworks for sale display shelf.  I haven't heard many fireworks on Halloween night.  I think they are more for Guy Fawkes Day celebrating.  [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guy_Fawkes_Night]

This is supposed to be for a November 5 holiday but friends have invited us to celebrate with their bonfire Saturday night.  There might be fireworks then too.

 
Here are KP and BP helping with more of my birthday celebrating.  This was after trick or treating was finished.  KP got a lot of candy from the kind neighbors who love for the children to come.  For us after our children left the roost our favorite Halloween thing to do was to see the costumes and to watch them ask for and give a thank you for the candy they got from us. 

KP helped Mrs. Jim make and frost this cake.  There were no birthday candles in Karen's flat so KP and I decided we could do a little make believe using this pink highlighter marker.  You should have seen it being lit and them watching me to blow out the candle.  It all worked very well.

Trivia:  The favorite candy folks like to give out is Tootsie Roll candies.  The most unliked candy the kids get is Tootsie Roll candies.

Two Shoes Tuesday # 9 -- "Fear" / Happy Birthday, Jim / MidWeek Blues

I'm celebrating my birthday today.  With my London U.K. family, our youngest granddaughter KP, teen granddauther BP, daughter Karen, and SIL Billy.  KP, age three, 'made' me this beautiful cake last night.  It was delicious, I had the blueberry cupcake last night.  KP ate the strawberry one. 

After we finished 'eating' and I had put the cupcakes back with her creation KP announced that the blueberry one was her favorite too.  I should have known that because second to gelato (Italian ice cream sold here on her High Street) blueberry muffins are her favorite food.

Before we had 'cake' last night we ate for my Birthday at a the Warrington Pub, also known as the Warrington Hotel.  "This hotel is an hotel in name only, sadly there are no longer any guest rooms. It was an hotel in the late 1800's and was rumoured to be a brothel, which must have worried the Church of England, who were its owners at the time." (Pubs.com site link for more reading)
 
I had fish and chips (French fries) with mushy peas and their own tarter sauce.  KP had an apple juice and an order of chips, Mrs. Jim and Karen shared a beef and tomato pot dish with mashed potatoes and red cabbage, and Billy had a lamb chop dinner meal.  It was all so very good!
 
Tonight we are eating Lebanese food at the Mezza Express.  Granddaugher BP will also join us for this one.  Last night she wasn't able to come.  Before we came I had purchased vouchers for tonight's meals from LivingSocial of which I am a member. http://www.livingsocial.com/united_kingdom/cities/885-south-west-london
 
LivingSocial ha special deals for practically all over.  I have sent to me the ones for the different Houston areas and also the ones for the London areas.  I would recommend you join, there is a great savings to be had.  Food is only one of their offers beside things like vacation get-aways, clothing, fun things, and the like. 
 
For my birthday I am looking at glider lesson offered through Living Social at the Bicester (London) Gliding Centre for £75.  "Come fly with me ... Just say those words and for £75 (a £174 value) you'll get a basic glider flight, including 2000 feet of launching, either by two winch launches or one 2000 feet aerotow, and up to 20 minutes of flying time ... How does this fit Josie's writing prompt word of fear?  I am afraid of telling my age, but not now as much as I used to (be afraid).  Among men I now generally will tell my age if that is what we are discussing, ages.  I do not tell my age on my blog but I was born pre-WWII a bit.  I still don't tell my age to women.  Only Merle, Australian blogging friend, knows my age because we are about the same age and have shared sort-of similar health situations.

I always tell people that I am going to 'run away' for my birthday.  Sometimes I do but seems that other people always come with me.  This time it is London, UK with a side trip to Dubrovnik, Croatia.  I will tell more about these scattering them through my blogging.

How does it fit MidWeek Blues?  Just look at the pretty blues on the cake, especially the blueberry cupcake.  On the walk to school this nice sunny London morning, Mrs. Jim and Billy are wearing blue jeans.  KP is wearing her P.E. red outfit for P.E. day today.  The fish and chips?  Well, I tell myself and you that the fish and chips were deep fried in an old speckled blue enameled pot.

Mema's Birthday

February 19 was to be her 90th birthday. Every year she would go to the Picadilly Cafeteria in Alexandria to celebrate.

We were in Alexandria, Louisiana. Our jobs were to get her house ready to sell .

For those who didn't know, Mema, Mrs. Jim's mother, died January 16, 2007 (link).

Since her birthday was generally a work day and all her children lived hours away, her good friend, Jane B, would take her there.

We had been working hard all day taking things to the Goodwill, out to the curb, and to nieces and nephews, calling the A/C fellow and the exterminator, visiting with her old neighbors, and other things of that nature.

About 2:30 in the afternoon we were getting hungry. We decided we would just go to the Picadilly in her honor.

We did the Jim Bunch eating thing again. Mrs. Jim and I, as did Royce and Velma, shared a Mardi Gras special. That was three nice pieces of fried catfish, two vegatables [we had fried okra and baked rice and brocolli], a bowl of seafood gumbo, garlic bread, dessert [Mrs. Jim and I shared a tasty lemon with coconut baked merengue topping], and a Diet Coke. Mrs. Jim and Velma each got their own bowl of gumbo. It was all very good.

One other mention. Every year since 1999 on Mema's birthday we remember my mother. Mom died on Mema's birthday in 1999.

Some day I will post the very nice eulogy Cliff Morrow composed and read for Mom.

Mom taught the kindergartners in Sunday School for fifty years, Cliff was one of her class members there at the First Baptist Church of Tekamah, Nebraska. Cliff had originally composed and read his memories of Mom at her fifty years service celebration.

The Jim Bunch Eats Again -- It's Jim's Birthday III

October 30th is Jim's BDay!!

.Mrs. Jim treated me to lunch at our local Applebee's at Conroe (link) today. It was delicious. They even gave me this blue balloon because it was my birthday. Opposite us with those other balloons were several small children and moms. [click on picture for full screen].

Mrs. Jim had the very tasty SANTA FE CHICKEN SALAD (link) The half salad size was plenty for her, I even had a few bites. *** A word of caution though, put the dressing 'on the side' as it was literally drowned in dressing. ***
..
I had the CAJUN LIME TILAPIA (link) with its 310 calories and 6 grams of fat. Sounds like I'm getting with my diet in a big way! It was delicious, Mrs. Jim had a few bites of that too..

Ok, with the balloon request came a surprise a little later. All the wait staff showed up to sing Happy Birthday. There were twice as many as you can see here. And I had to stand up in my chair for the world to watch..

Then my diet went bye-bye. With the singing group came this delicious chocolate sundae with whip cream and cherry!

I was feeling pretty good about that, probably that free sundae was the reason I would condescend to stand.

All was well and fine. I got the bill and it seemed a little high. A good look showed (no, there wasn't a charge for the singing wait staff group) a charge of $2.99 for my sundae!

At first I was mortified, but Mrs. Jim calmed me down some. Then we both decided that the waitress was so nice that we would just overlook this and pay up as billed.

I don't know if the 'birthday sundae' is supposed to be free or not. We surely didn't ask for it or the singers, just a little blue balloon.
*** Restaurant rating: 3 1/2 of 5 forks -- too much salad dressing and a charge for an unasked for sundae.
