Cool Western Breeze, Open Window -- Two Shoes Tuesday

Cool western breeze, open window
.
Cool western breeze, open window,
Calmly blowing flickering flames
The candles don't seem to mind

Rain in pin sized droplets glistening
Sagging curtain, it's dripping wet
Worries, soon to fall, on the floor

Murky puddles grow, rain stops not
Once was dust, now is mud and slime
Fit for pigs, the floor doesn't mind

Open window lets nature in

Nature's critter, our beloved Katrin, also wants in.
May she RIP

Katrin, our toy poodle died Tuesday last week
.
She died in her doctor's office of heart failure.  We loved Katrin so very much, Mrs. Jim had "rescued" her from a dying friend.

At left is Katrin last year on her 13th July birthday walking across the back porch to our back door. On the right is a very guilty dog back in 2008 when we first got her.  She had gotten into BP's toothpaste.  See this link:

To the Store -- Two Shoes Tuesday

 I went to the store
I went to the store, the streets were quiet
They'd closed the antique store, we missed the sale
Where have all the people gone, streets are bare

I went to the store, the shelves were full
Been quiet in here this week I was told
Got my baloney, cheese, and some rye bread

A beef barbeque and a Coke to go
On the way home there wasn't much traffic
Where are the folks?  My neighbors are gone too

Just don't buy the store right now, wait and see

Wants or Needs? -- for Josie's Two Shoes Tuesday

[picture of a toy  1950 Studebaker Starlight Coupe, a cast iron model of my first car]
[for a list of all the cars I have owned, see item Four, here]
[I have quite a few cast iron 1:18 scale toy cars, this one included.]
[Also I have one similar to most of the older cars I have owned.]

"You don't necessary get what you want but you do get what you need."

Words I'll always remember when teaching my Business Law classes and getting to where I could recite that.  It would bring smiles, and some I think actually understood the principle of law behind it.  The Rolling Stones song, "You Can't Always Get What You Want" (the title but it goes on, " ... But if you try sometime, you just might find You get what you need")

Involved was contract made by a minor.  The law states that "if a contract is for a "necessity," such as food or emergency medical care, the minor cannot void the contract." http://www.masslegalhelp.org/children-and-families/emancipation

General rule:  A contract made by a minor is not enforceable as they are too young to understand the obligation that they are entering.  In most states contractual capacity, having mental capacity as to understand the nature of their bargain, is lacking until a person reaches age 18 or 21, most states now this age is 18.  (You can check yours if the need arises.)

Exception to the general rule for minors: If a contract is for a "necessity," such as food or emergency medical care, the minor cannot avoid his end of the contract.

How does this affect me?  If I make a contract to  a minor he can make me perform but I cannot make him honor his side of the bargain.  What he will do has the legal name of "avoiding his contractual obligation."  After he becomes of age within a reasonable time he can "affirm" his contract by some act, as paying money, living in the property, or doing work on it, etc.  If he does nothing then it is still avoidable because he made it when he was a minor.

Bottom line, don't enter into a contract with a minor.  Have an adult 'countersign', 'co-sign', or just plain make it for the minor.  Like my dad did when I bought my first car, he signed for it.

Had I signed for it I could have gone for a joy ride, blown the engine, and then refused to pay for the car or even bring it back, just leave it where the seller could get it.  That is for pleasure ride use, but had I driven it to buy food (a necessity but not 'luxury food', and then blown it, I would have had to pay for reasonable use, probably the same amount as a taxi would charge me.

This is the way the law operates in most states.  But not all states are the same.  But beware the consequences for you if you make a contract with a minor.

You Can't Always Get What You Want
(The Rolling Stone's song Lyrics)
..
"Well, I saw her today at the reception
A glass of wine in her hand
I knew she would go meet her connection
At her feet was her footloose man

No, you can't always get what you want
aaaahhwaw
No, you can't always get what you want
aaaahhwaw
No, you can't always get what you want
aaaahhwaw
But if you try sometime, you just might find
You get what you need

And I went down to the demonstration
To get my fair shares of abuse
Singing, "We're gonna vent our frustration
And if we don't, we are going to blow a 50-amp fuse", yeah
And no, you can't always get what you want**

 aaaahhwaw
No, you can't always get what you want
aaaahhwaw
Well, no, you can't always get what you want
aaaahhwaw
But if you try sometimes you just might find
You get what you need, baby

And I went down to the Chelsea drugstore
To get your prescriptions filled
I was standin' in line with Mr. Jimmy
And man, did he look pretty ill

We decided to have a soda
"Whatcha favorite flavor?", "Cherry red"
And I sung my song to my friend Jimmy
And he said one word back to me, that was "Dead"
I said

Oh, you can't always get what you want
aaaahhwaw
Oh, you can't always get what you want
aaaahhwaw
Oh, you can't always get what you want
aaaahhwaw
But if you try sometimes, you just might find
You get what you need

Oh, you can't always get what you want
aaaahhwaw
You can't always get what you want
aaaahhwaw
You can't always get what you want
aaaahhwaw
You can't always get what you want
aaaahhwaw

And I saw her today at the reception
In her glass was a bleeding man
And she was practised that the art of deception
I could tell by her blood-stained hands

Oh, you can't always get what you want
aaaahhwaw
Oh, you can't always get what you want
aaaahhwaw

Oh, you can't always get what you want
aaaahhwaw
Oh, you can't always get what you want
aaaahhwaw
Oh, you can't always get what you want
aaaahhwaw
Oh, you can't always get what you want
aaaahhwaw
But if you try sometimes you just might find
You get what you need

News today, omen -- a 4-6-4-6-6 Tanka poem -- for Josie's Two Shoes Tuesday

Read the News Today?**

Did you observe?
Bad omen? Take over?
 Birds in the streets
What should be up is down
Can you see, are they armed?

I wrote this 4-6-4-6-6 Tanka for Josie Two Shoes and am linked with her here.  Her
instructions, "writing themes to choose from are observe and omen" and I used both.

** Note:  I am reminded of the Beatles song,
"I read the news today, oh boy"

"I read the news today, oh boy
About a lucky man who made the grade
And though the news was rather sad
Well, I just had to laugh
I saw the photograph

He blew his mind out in a car
He didn't notice that the lights had changed
A crowd of people stood and stared
They'd seen his face before
Nobody was really sure if he was from the House of Lords
I saw a film today, oh boy

The English army had just won the war
A crowd of people turned away
But I just had to look, having read the book
I'd love to turn you on

Woke up, fell out of bed
Dragged a comb across my head
Found my way downstairs and drank a cup
And looking up, I noticed I was late

Found my coat and grabbed my hat
Made the bus in seconds flat
Found my way upstairs and had a smoke
And somebody spoke and I went into a dream
Ahh, ahh, ahh

I read the news today, oh boy
Four thousand holes in Blackburn, Lancashire
And though the holes were rather small
They had to count them all
Now they know how many holes it takes to fill the Albert Hall
I'd love to turn you on
"

Done and Dance -- for Josie's Two Shoes Tuesday

Dancing I will never forget

I will never forget that night, it was of all things, at my dance lesson for the day.  We were taking a holiday, a Southern Caribbean Cruise on the ship, the HMS Queen Mary II.  I was having some trouble with the Cha Cha Cha.  My rubber soled walking shoes were a part of the problem as there is a lot turning to be done in that dance. At least the way we were doing it.

The dancing instructor took me aside and helped me as I had never been helped before.  I don't remember a word she said.  I do remember dancing with her.  She followed my every move without my slightest nudge or pull.  Never did she lead.  I am sure she gave me good instructions because I really don't recall any troubles with my dance.  I think we touched slightly quite often, why don't I remember that part better?

Besides her following my lead, I remember even better her build.  She was short, of slight build, young, and very pretty.  And Russian.  My guess is that she weighed around ninety pounds. Very light on her feet, the best dancing partner I ever have had.  She smelled good too, I don't remember any special perfume, body odor or smoker residue.

I won't forget that part of the night.  Later there was a dance, the QM2 has a large ballroom with a dance floor as big as many roller skating rinks.  Surrounding it are several rows of observation theatre-like chairs, behind those are many tables and chairs occupied by the dancers when they aren't dancing.

I have forgotten everything about the dance that night.  And I don't remember how to dance the Cha Cha Cha.  But I do remember my instructor and the events leading to the special lesson.  I will always remember her and how good she danced

I'm done with my story, let the chill bumps calm.

Day 2, January 4 (2009):
A day at sea. We ended with a dance in the ballroom. Full dress (formal) was required.

 Day 3, still at sea

Mist, Moon, and Clouds -- for Josie's Two Shoes Tuesday

Mist or moon she said
If I'm up in my balloon
Then I could see both

Clouds chock full of rain
Headed north to make some floods
They too hide my moon

Drawing cards -- for Josie's Two Shoes Tuesday

Cards, luck of the draw?

"Pick a card, any card," cried the barker.  Lucy wasn't very good at gambling, let alone drawing cards for any card game.  So she walked rapidly on by the booth that Saturday morning.  They were at the county fair, she and her cousins came for a lark.  And possibly to pet some sheep when it started getting hot.

Becky tugged at her sleeve, saying, "Lucy, this could be our lucky weekend.  Let's go back."  So they did, walking sheepishly to the stall and then going on very slowly.  Glancing shyly at the young man who had yelled before, Lucy couldn't believe who she was seeing.

It was the timid young boy she thought was so cute.  He was in the ninth grade, over at the high school.  Well now, he couldn't be a bad guy, she had always heard nice things about him.  Whispers passed between the girls, then they came to face the young man in the booth.

The boy smiled, blushed, and said to the girls.  "Who wants to go first?  I'll shuffle this deck of cards and you pick one.  Then you draw another card.  If it matches the rank of your first card you win one of these little dolls.  If you are able to match, then I shuffle them again and you draw two more cards.  If both cards match your first two you win a big stuffed animal.  Now doesn't that sounds easy?  Fun too."

"How much does it cost?" asked Sally a little sheepishly.  "Try it once for a buck.  Three tries for two bucks," said the boy.  "Lucy, you do it, I'll spring for a  dollar."  Lucy agreed.  This was her lucky day, she won a big Teddy bear.

The girls thanked the fellow and went on.  Everywhere they went that day, even into the sheep pens, Lucy brought her bear.  She was on hog heaven.  "I love that fellow," she thought, "such a nice boy."

Little did she know that part of the young man's job included learning how to fix the game.  Either to win or lose, depending on winnings that day.  They needed people in the crowd to see those bears being carried around so they would want to come win one for themselves.

Chocolate

Whitman's Sampler chocolates for Mrs. Jim has become a tradition at our house.  I don't even know when it started, it has been so long ago.

For sure, if I don't make it shopping or can't decide on a gift for her, Mrs. Jim will have a present, a box of candy.  I never get another brand.

She is generous to an extent with her candy.  She likes to hand the box to the guest, or to me, and he or she is to take ONE piece of chocolate.  A couple of times she has left the box around and people almost cleaned her out.

I do my shopping before the holiday or occasion when they will be on sale.  Either the large double box, like the one pictured here, or a standard size will do.  She isn't particular and I get the size that is on sale.  Usually the sale price is HALF PRICE.

These are the days for her, January 1 on her birthday, March or April for Easter, May for Mother's Day, and December 25 which is Christmas.  Sometimes when the standard size is the one, I will get another and break it out after she finishes the first.

When I first started the standard box was one pound (16 ounces) and the large double box was two pounds (32 ounces).  Now they are 12 and 24 ounce sizes.  They didn't go the present sizes all at once, but rather there were steps.  I don't remember what exactly they were.

In my very early life I had a friend who worked at the Russell Stover factory in Lincoln, Nebraska, where I lived.  We were very friendly and went places together at times.  I can't remember if this was dating or not.  Anyway, she was able to buy 'rejects' at very low prices and I then had a source for my candy.  There wasn't anything wrong with the candy except for its shape or possible being slightly crushed.

When I was in college at the University of Nebraska I worked at the Miller and Paine department store.  They sold candy including very fine chocolates which they made up on the top floor in their own small factory.  At Christmas time I would be temporary on loan from my rug department up to help out with the candy production.  I seem to remember that we could eat all we wanted on the job but had to buy it to take it home.

I used to eat a lot of M&M's and other candy bars.  My favorite was and still is the Mounds Bar.  It is dark chocolate filled with a coconut filling.  But now, my doctor has taken nuts and peanuts out of my diet so that cramped my style.  M&M conveniently came out with Peanut Butter (filled) M&M's, maybe just for KP and me.  I am not allergic to peanuts, it is just that I can't eat hard things that don't fully digest well.  Like corn, vegetable seeds, and nuts.

My favorite topping for ice cream is the Magic Shell which hardens when drizzled on the cold ice cream.  Next would be chocolate syrup.  That was atop a chocolate brownie topped with vanilla ice cream; then the chocolate syrup, whipped cream, and a maraschino cherry.  I have just describe a Corn Crib Sundae which was part of my between meals diet at the University.  Conveniently the snack and treats room in the Student Center was called the Corn Crib.

Troll Lives Here

.
Troll Lives Here .............

That's what they said,
and don't dare go near the bridge
guarded by the two white swans.

The big birds are slaves of the troll. They
will drown any trespasser on sight.

Who are we to argue with those lords,
I hear they have guns and WOMDs*.

A troll lives here, stay
far away from his lair we were told.
Now my partner is mighty bold

so she turned our boat the other way,
to where a small white sentry bird
was standing.  He clucked

and screamed.  We knew these creatures,
simple as they seemed, were not of
the wild but were vassals of the troll.

With no escape in the channels now we looked to the shores of the lagoon. What seemed so safe till

we approached was guarded by still
more serfs.  They were of grey and dull nature and half asleep on their spindly legs.

Then for us they too screeched their
message, "not wanted here."

We steered to the other side where by grace of Heavens, there was a place
for us to land our ship. Stranger still,

these contented grey creatures had
another nature.  They screeched not of doom and death.  Rather they bode,

"Welcome to the Promised Land."
We dropped anchor and lived happily
ever after, reminiscing of Gilligan.

One Sunday while we were in London, August 26 (2013), Mrs. Jim, KP, and I were at Regent's Park (link) again.  The 410 acre park is within walking distance of Karen and Billy's flat.  It is the home of the London Zoo.  For children there are three play grounds and about six places to buy ice cream or gelato.

This time we rented us a paddle boat and explored the limits of the lake and  stream that went through, as far as we were allowed.  Many times we have come to feed the birds, admire the garden flower settings, or just get our exercise walking.

Lost in Leister Square -- Two Shoes Tuesday (Lost and Habit)

.
Not exactly lost though as we are just in front of the M&M Store.  Some of these people I will show here may be lost before it is all over.

They are waiting for a glimpse of One Direction members.  Some have been waiting for three days now.

Headlines say: London's Leicester Square ahead of the premiere of new documentary One Direction (Link 1 BBC Live)(Link 2 Googled).

We came down town (London) to eat at the Five Guys Restaurant.

It just happened that when we got off the Tube at Piccadilly Circus and headed up to eat we ran into this bunch waiting at Leicester Square.
.
.
.
.
.
.

The picture at the center shows a little of what these 'lost' people were waiting for.  The beige umbrella originated from inside the barrier just as I was taking the picture.  I moved it once and it came back before I could take my picture.

I moved it again and this time it was let go.  I held it up and took another shot which I didn't used here as it was poorer quality.  After that I gave it back and said to the unknown and unseen owner, "Thank You."  That owner still unseen but sounding like a young female, replied, "You are welcome."

Click on the right hand picture to read the sign, "Information for Fans."

We finally made it to Five Guys for our American style meal.  Mrs. Jim had a grilled cheese sandwich and I had a BLT.  We shared a large order of Fries (not chips) and each had a Diet Coke.  The soft drinks came from the new red drink machines like we have in all the BK's (Burger Kings) in Texas.

There was a short line but not bad for almost two in the afternoon.  Oh yes, there were free refills on the soft drinks like in most all of the U.S.  Eating here very much could get to be habit forming on one.   The burgers were just like those in the States except that wouldn't really be a treat for us.  Hot dogs are just around the corner.

This is a picture that I enlarged from the Five Guys picture above.  Clicking on it will make it larger still.  Karen, Mrs. Jim, and KP were in the outside line (queue) waiting to order.  Billy was just getting settled and I was taking the picture.

The August 20th writing prompt words to choose from "Tuesday Two-Shoes" are Habit and Lost. Josie Said, "Have Fun!"  (link)

P.S. We are back to London now from our wonderful Princess cruise from Venice to Athens via the Black Sea and Istanbul.
