The Zuider Zee — My Alphabe-Thursday (2nd), the letter "Z" / Thursday Two Questions —

"Z" is for the Zuider Zee.
What do you know about the Zuider Zee?
When did you first hear about the Zuider Zee?

I first learned about the Zuider Zee in my country grade school from the poem, "The Leak in the Dike" (link). You won't see the sea named by the Zuider Zee but that was it. The Zuider Zee was mostly recovered by land using a series of dikes. In the 1600's through to the 1900's the dikes would break and tens of thousands of people perished. Also see the Wikipedia article here (link).
The gist of this poem, and the legend that became before and after was all about The story of the little boy who averted a flood disaster by sticking his finger in the dyke. This story is famous all over the world . Mary Mapes Dodge (1831 - 1905), an American author of children's books, wrote the story and published it in her book around 1865. (link).

This was my school. I suppose I was about in the 6th grade and my sister in the front left was in the first or second grade. Beside her was my first cousin as was the boy on the right. So half the school kids were either brother-sister or first cousins. I don't know the tall girl beside me. The girl beside me and the girl in front by my boy cousin were sisters.

You___? — My Alphabe-Thursday (2nd), the letter "Y" / Thursday Two Questions —
"Y" is for Young People, Youngsters, and Youth

Saturday a group mostly from Mrs. Jim's Sunday school class and a group of about twelve youth from our church journeyed to a local East Texas ranch where we worked with 127 young people from Houston.
Our 'work' consisted of conducting activities at six different stations scattered about on the ranch. In order of my post, they were fishing, horse riding, paddle boating, face painting, a hay ride, and a short Bible study.
Pictured here is one of the helping youth who came with the younger children participating in fishing. These kids liked to dig right in along with the younger ones.I was stationed to help with the fishing group. This also shows the 'leader' of our group. We baited the hooks, helped the kids with 'casting' their rods, holding them waiting for a bite, in pulling them in, and
then taking the hook out and putting the fish back into the lake.
This is the only turtle that was caught. Everyone was pretty excited about it. The youngster here didn't want to get too close to it but did want her picture taken with it. So, ...
BTW [By the way], the hooks had no barbs.

Show above left are our two fishing spots. I caught this little fish before the kids came back from lunch. This was my fourth time to 'fish.' The first was with my first steady girl friend at her parents farm. We 'got to' take her little brother and we spent most of our time baiting hooks and taking fish off for the brother. I caught no fish.
The second time was when camping with our four older children. Again no fish for me, it was all balt and release for the kids.
The third time was for my 70th birthday, BIL Billy took me to Orange, Texas, to fish with him and his dad in the Inter Coastal Canal that runs from Florida to Mexico. I was the only one who caught a fish as a storm came up and we had to come in (link to my prior fishing post). I got my first fishing license for that outing.
After our station came horse riding. The kids did ride one the horses, but they did not ride a horse. That second meaning means having control of the horse and can see that no way was this five-year-old in control his his big horse. He 'rode' in the same way that Mrs. Jim, Mema, and I rode camels in Egypt.
This station was very pleasant. I can remember that I always like to ride the paddle boats. We had six paddle boats.Each group of children ran from 21 to 25 kids. They were grouped according to age, the youngest were five and then ages went on up to age twelve.
Our adults ran from the 60's up into the 80's. Alan, our Youth Director is about 30.

These are the face painting ladies at work. A kitty-cat face was the favorite for the girls. This girl will have one of those right after Mrs. Jim paints a pretty flower on her hand. I have a feeling they picked the ones with some artistic talent for this place.
The beagle above reminded me of Adi. She loved having her next scratched. And Adi? She died on September 17, 2012. I still miss her very much.This group here belonged with the paddle boats. Their job beside putting in and pulling out the boats included putting on the life jackets. Right now they were resting (waiting for the kids to come after lunch).
This is the smallest group. They help with making Cross necklaces which are a cross-shaped bottle filled with colored 'sand' and having a neck string attached to the screw lid.Most work groups were six but this was smaller. We all enjoyed working with the young people as most have experience from being grandparents.
Here you are seeing the assembly in the morning when the bus loads of young people arrived. Behind the groups in the center the white and brown spotted SUV is hitched to the hay ride wagon. I think there is at least one other group out of camera's view to the ride. If you count 127 of these youngsters then I got them all in the picture.
Here comes a group of youngsters, being escorted by a couple of the youth, to the fishing spot.Below is the chow hall where we were served chili cheese dogs, chips, some fruit, and two Oriel Cookies. I had colored punch for drink.
At the right is the tired of not-so-young group ready to go home. The Bible study chapel is in the room behind this wall.

— My Alphabe-Thursday (2nd), the letter "X" / Thursday Two Questions —

My "X" word for this week is Xu. What is that you ask. So I looked it up in the Scrabble Dictionary and this is what I found:

So it seems that if my "X" word, Xu, is not defined but is a word, then it is up to me as to what to post. I am posting several screen captures of items that I have found and then some comment to go with that. Don't be alarmed, I am only posting a few of the many possibilities.
Beck's Prime sent me this coupon so that Mrs. Jim and and I could honor the occasion. We have a Beck's Prime here in The Woodlands, Texas, so it won't be a major drive for us. The Woodlands also has two multi-screen movie theatres so likely we can see a movie for our outing. Or we could go shopping??

Mrs. Jim, son Tim, and I climbed the cliff up to the church. Since then I've had another heart stent but then that climb almost did me in. I did not walk any further past the church with the better walkers, Mrs. Jim and Tim.

The goofy looking guy at the left is an unknown artist's rendition of Jonah sitting in the belly of the big fish.
Our Sunday school lesson was over the book of Jonah which tells of the episode of the unwilling prophet, Jonah, in his dealing with his mission trip to Nineveh. Jonah did not want to go there as he detested the people of Nineveh and had decided they did not need to know about God's love for them.
You probably remember this Bible story. Anyway, when Jonah went the other way God caused a shipwreck and while struggling to keep afloat God sent a big fish to swallow Jonah. Jonah learned his lesson for a bit and did go to Nineveh and deliver God's message to the Ninevehites. But he resented doing that afterwards. (my earlier Jonah blog link)
I ran across this picture of Elin Nordegren's new toy. It is the larger of the two yachts and it belongs to her new boy friend, Chris Cline.
This yacht belonging to Cline is nine feet longer than the one behind it. The shorter yacht belongs to Elin's ex-husband, Tiger Woods.
A yacht is not on my bucket list. I did have a John boat once but gave it away. All I had to do was to set it and the little outboard motor out at the curb and they were gone the next morning.
It may have come in a circulating e-mail.
This summer we should visit relatives. We have them in Nebraska, Iowa, Louisiana, Tennessee, and London (U.K.). I subscribe, free, to several tourist information Web sites concerning some of these locations. Nebraska was showing this picture on the Road Trip recent page of the "Visit Nebraska" Web site (link). "Visit Britain" also has a nice tourism blog (link).

While I was getting the Visit Nebraska page to get the link URL this was in my inBox. Ima Gartner of the Food Network had sent me an invitation to visit her blog and learn how to cook rhubarb deserts (link). I love rhubarb, that is a reason to visit the Midwest in Spring. We cannot grow rhubarb down here in the Gulf Coast area.

Mrs. Jim's favorite song of Willie's depends on the season, but tonight when I wrote this it was Crazy. My favorite is To All the Girls I've Loved Before.

"W" is for Willie Nelson. Willie is Mrs. Jim's favorite country-western song writer and singer. A list of his songs is here, but there are so many that I didn't take time to count them.

Happy Birthday to Willie, he will be 80 years old next Tuesday, April 30. He was born in Abbott, Texas, in 1933. We were in high school together in different schools. I asked Mrs. Jim if I were cuter than Willie was as we looked at his high school picture. She said I was always cuter.Mrs. Jim's favorite song of Willie's depends on the season, but tonight when I wrote this it was Crazy. My favorite is To All the Girls I've Loved Before.

What's been going on? — My Alphabe-Thursday (2nd), the letter "V" / Thursday Two Questions —

"V" is for View. We each have experienced many magnificent views in our lives.
However, these are some everyday views I personally was blessed to view, most of them this last week.
First, on the left, is the front yard of a fellow who had invited us to visit his personal antique car museum. That was a visit I wish everyone could have. Later here in another blog post I will show some of the cars I particularly liked.
You may need to enlarge your view to see this good. My favorite is a large bust of our first and only Texas President, President Sam Houston. It was created by the same sculpture who made the statue in my last, bottom here, view picture.
Our view at the right was a field of wild Texas Bluebonnets flowers pretty much in bloom. The Bluebonnet is our Texas State Flower.
Out of the picture by the roadside but in the field was a young family taking pictures of the kids sitting out in he midst of the flowers.
That is a traditional picture of Texas children that most families have in their albums. Now I guess it would be in their disc drive file box.
This is the view from our back porch. The little white dog is our toy poodle, Katrin.
Our backyard is expanded nicely by the golf course par five hole number 11. We are situated at the outside left corner of the dog leg.
The tree to the left finished making spring leaves just this week. It is in the neighbor's backyard, the property line is at the utility connection box beyond Katrin. Our lot is pie-shaped with 55 feet in the back and 143 feet in the front.
Now we switch to view a March picture. We had my Sunday school class party at our home.
Pictured are fifteen of the 27 present. More were at left, one was sitting in the kitchen, and then more still right in chairs behind the couch.
Our class is age ranked from 70 years of age and up. Only a couple are under 70 and many are in their 80's.
This is a porch view of the azaleas lining our right hand border in the side yard.
Our back porch runs the full length of the house, seventy feet. We had the floor covered with ceramic tile a couple of summers ago.
Our furniture there is generally sparse, a row of four chairs and a round coffee table. We do have a rectangular table and six chairs but we haven't put it out for several years now, not since we tiled the floor.
This is a view from the golf cart I was riding on the course where I play on Tuesdays. This Tuesday I lost my ball in the little creek to the left of that golf cart.
The group I play with on Tuesdays is a group of about twenty men from Mrs. Jim's Sunday school class. Her age group is from age 60 and up although most are in their seventies with a few 80's.
This view I saw last Friday on the way to the Early Ford V8 Texas Tour, which our local club hosted this year.
I did not bring an old Ford and I left our family car in Huntsville, Texas, with Mrs. Jim. Tom from San Antonio asked me to ride with him.
We were going through the Sam Houston National Forest (map) headed to lunch at one of our member'sfarm ranch home.
My ride here was in Tom's 1937 Ford Convertible Sedan. It had four doors and had been restored very nicely. Up ahead was a 1948 Ford Tudor that we followed.
This is the view I had while riding the little antique Ferris Wheel at A's ranch (link). You can see a few of the old Fords the various clubs' members had driven to lunch. Ninety-four early Fords were brought to the meet.
We ate in the saloon to the right of this pretty little old guest house. We also sat to eat outside on the porch an on various picnic tables scattered on the ground.
Cars that are classified as Early Ford V8's are any Ford or Ford motor vehicle manufactured between the years of 1932 and 1953. Those are the years that Mr. Ford put the V8 flathead engines in the majority of his cars. Some of the older ones had a four cylinder engine similar to those of the Model A Fords. These cars were called Model B Fords.
Later during the 40's and 50's some of the Ford products had six cylinder engines. Any of these automobiles made during the years between 1932 and 1953 will be eligible for club membership (mine is a black 1950 Ford Custom Tudor, currently not running). Ford, Mercury, and Lincoln (some Lincoln's in the 40's and 50's years had V12 engines) cars are eligible as are the trucks of these makes and years.
Our final view here is a 67-foot-tall statue of Texas President Sam Houston (link). The statue is a few miles south of Huntsville, Texas, on the side of Interstate Highway 45.
It is visible from a couple of miles to the south and also welcomes motorists coming over the hill from the north.
We held our Texas State meeting in Huntsville and took this picture on our way back to the awards banquet on Saturday night. We had gone home to our house after helping count ballets to feed Katrin here supper.

Her age group is from age 60 and up although most are in their seventies with a few 80's.
This view I saw last Friday on the way to the Early Ford V8 Texas Tour, which our local club hosted this year.I did not bring an old Ford and I left our family car in Huntsville, Texas, with Mrs. Jim. Tom from San Antonio asked me to ride with him.
We were going through the Sam Houston National Forest (map) headed to lunch at one of our member's
My ride here was in Tom's 1937 Ford Convertible Sedan. It had four doors and had been restored very nicely. Up ahead was a 1948 Ford Tudor that we followed.
This is the view I had while riding the little antique Ferris Wheel at A's ranch (link). You can see a few of the old Fords the various clubs' members had driven to lunch. Ninety-four early Fords were brought to the meet.We ate in the saloon to the right of this pretty little old guest house. We also sat to eat outside on the porch an on various picnic tables scattered on the ground.
Cars that are classified as Early Ford V8's are any Ford or Ford motor vehicle manufactured between the years of 1932 and 1953. Those are the years that Mr. Ford put the V8 flathead engines in the majority of his cars. Some of the older ones had a four cylinder engine similar to those of the Model A Fords. These cars were called Model B Fords.
Later during the 40's and 50's some of the Ford products had six cylinder engines. Any of these automobiles made during the years between 1932 and 1953 will be eligible for club membership (mine is a black 1950 Ford Custom Tudor, currently not running). Ford, Mercury, and Lincoln (some Lincoln's in the 40's and 50's years had V12 engines) cars are eligible as are the trucks of these makes and years.
Our final view here is a 67-foot-tall statue of Texas President Sam Houston (link). The statue is a few miles south of Huntsville, Texas, on the side of Interstate Highway 45. It is visible from a couple of miles to the south and also welcomes motorists coming over the hill from the north.
We held our Texas State meeting in Huntsville and took this picture on our way back to the awards banquet on Saturday night. We had gone home to our house after helping count ballets to feed Katrin here supper.
