Two Shoes Tuesday #2 / Danger! -- MidWeek Blues

What you are seeing in the picture above is the scene below me that I took while up in an antique Ferris Wheel.  Our friend Alton, a fellow club member of our Montgomery Country Early Ford V-8 Club, owns this wheel and has it permanently (well, I guess he could move it if he wanted to) in place on his farm down by his 'early village' place. 



Mrs. Jim and I were to get off shortly like this couple to the right is about to do when it was our turn.   But it was at least a half hour before our turn came up. 

We were stuck near the top when the Alis Chalmers engine belt pulley failed to go around on its own power anymore to pull the big wheel around.

Alton's hired hand and fellow old car mechanic had to do some fixing in the mechanism used to engage the pulley into 'drive.'

I am thinking that there was no real danger here but it was a little scary because the old Ferris wheel would sway back and forth with the breeze.

The pictures on the left above is a full view of Alton's old Ferris wheel.  He found this old wheel in Oklahoma and trailered it down to his Texas ranch. Then he proceeded to restore/rebuild it modern specifications.  The Alis Chalmers engine also needed restoring but that was an easy and fun task for Alton. 

The Ferris wheel is early 1900's while the engine is one from the 30's or 40's.  I seem to have the number 1928 in my mind but I cannot associate it with either the engine or the wheel. (more about the wheel and our Christmas picnic party)

I took the pictures while attending Alton's annual Christmas party in 2010.  We had a wonderful Christmas dinner at his early village in his restored saloon.  

Also we viewed his antique cars, mostly Fords from 1932 to 1953 which were in various stages of restoration.  After the dinner, a noon affair, we all took turns riding the Ferris wheel.  There were no more rides that day after we all disembarked.

The picture on the upper right was taken of a modern Ferris wheel when we attended the County Fair in Brennan, Texas.  We were sitting in the rodeo area watching the rodeo when I noticed this wonderful view of this wheel.  We enjoyed the rodeo very much.

One of our objectives in going there was to give our French visitor, Corine, a chance to see in real time, live, a bull riding episode.  Corine was not disappointed.  I blogged about that back in 2010.

I decided that while I'm flying the flag outside for today [9/11 Remembrance] I should also fly it here for readers.

This is our flag flying in front of our house, taken on another patriotic day. It looks this same way today.

I hope and pray that He will bless you all. We thank Him for our safety and well being and pray for the survivors and the families of the deceased from this horrible attack.

Lollipops, Lily Pads, and Laxatives — My Alphabe-Thursday — "L" — Things in a Row — Two Questions — MidWeek Blues

"L" is for LolliPops, Lily Pads, and Laxative Pills and Potients.

Things I didn't get a picture of?   KP with her Lollipop.
When I went to the bank, at the drive in window, the teller there offered and gave KP a Lollipop. KP was very proud of that Lollipop.
The large 'all day sucker' type Lollipops on the stand were at the Dilan's Candy Bar
candy shop in the Galleria Mall in Houston.  KP wasn't there, neither was Mrs. Jim or Karen, so I came out of that store with only the pictures.  No candy.
.
I took the pillar sales pole picture for Pat of Thursday's Things in a Row as well as being an "L" word, but she is out this Thursday on holiday.

Things I didn't get a picture of? KP feeding the fishes, turtles, and ducks.

We went to the 'park.'  KP loves to go to the park.  To her that means a playground park.  Our park has a little playground that passes her test. 
.
I did get this nice picture of the Lily pad in the park.  That is what we call them, Mrs. Jim and I, with the flower being a water Lily.  Technically they are Yellow Water Lily, Mexican Water Lily, or Nymphaea Mexicana.
.
Another picture I didn't get?  Yes, there was (not) one.  A couple of weeks ago when I was playing golf with the guys, my ball went in a little pond.  And guess what?  My ball was sitting on a large floating Lily pad. 
.
But no picture, my camera was in the golf cart over on the cart path.  [In the pictures below, note the pond's water in the little half moon window.]

"L" is for Laxative. For my semi-annual cardio checkup yesterday I had to give a blood sample, take a stress test while waking and running on the treadmill, and have my body's arteries checked by sonogram. 
.
I passed all three tests but not exactly with a perfect score. But pretty good considering. The Laxative? It went along with no food after midnight, etc, parts.
.
— The display sales post full of all day suckers was posted here especially for Pat's Things in a Row. .But she is absent.  So ... ?  (Enjoy it anyway.)

Indigo — MidWeek Blues / My Alphabe-Thursday -- "I" -- Two Questions -- MidWeek Blues

I found these little wild flowers while I was looking for my lost ball over in the sideline weeds.  I don't know what kind of plant this was growing out there in the brush.
.
There was a brighter side to golf than loosing balls, like this pretty green you see below that sits across the pond.  I have also lost quite a few golf balls in this pond as you might imagine.

Last week 's post was about Hush Puppies, either shoes or the fried kind to eat with fried fish. The responses were very interesting.

My Two Questions for this week (you can answer just one if you wish):

1. What is you favorite wild flowers?  Tell us a bit about your experience with them.

Texas has a lot of wild flowers.  The most common are blue bonnets, Indian paint brush, golden rod, and assorted yellow flowers.
2. What do you have that is indigo blue?
.
We also have quite a bit of indigo blue pottery, glass vases, and food dishes.

Bonus Question: What is your favorite outside activity? 
You probably guessed that mine is playing golf.  Next would be going for long walks.  Before I developed all these knee problems I would run.  I liked running much better than golfing.   And before I sold my motorcycle I like riding that bike a whole lot, even better than the running (faster speeds for one thing so I could cover more ground/territory).

A blue day — MidWeek Blues — Ford Model A Pickup

This light blue Ford Model A Pickup was parked in the Handicap Parking section of our church parking lot during church services. I'd love to have one like this. My guess on the year is 1929 or 1930.
I pushed the blue color but everything you see blue is really blue though some is not as blue as you are seeing.

It's a blue day today. It rained all day yesterday and last night so there won't be any golf today. Bad wintry days can be the bane of a pleasant retirement.

Speaking of guesses, I regret to say my contest isn't coming along very well. I need to publicize it better.

That sounds easy. Just guess how many dog biscuits are in my jar.

They're sold in boxes like this. The jar is an antique (almost) from the 1950's.


Although these biscuits are sold for puppies I give them to my adult dogs, Adi (beagle) and Katrin (toy poodle).

I don't give them a whole biscuit at a time so these thin ones break easier.

Christmas put-aways 101 — MidWeek Blues —

Why do Christmas decorations always come down and get put away much slower than taking out and putting up?

While Mrs. Jim worked on the tree and the household decorations my job was simpler--just bring in the outside stuff, pack it up, and put it away. Then, of course, my other job was to help with the inside things under Mrs. Jim's directions. I must say that she did most of that and worked very hard at it.

Here is the harder part of the outside stuff:

First I had to get the snowman stuffed back into the little box that it came in. That turned out very simple, just stuff it in and tape the box shut.
Then the two white deer had to be disassembled and boxed and the lights put in their places. That all worked fine too until I stepped on one of the lights. Between a pair of needle nose pliers, a broom and dustpan, and the vacuum cleaner that went fairly quickly still.

I didn't picture everything but these were items either with blue or that caused me some problem. We did have an outside little tree blow over and break the base I had made for it. It too is packed except for the broken base. I will construct a more sturdy base for next year.

Adi Can — MidWeek Blues — relinquish her bed



Yes, she will give her bed up.

That isn't saying she's happy about it.

These scenes below show that trouble can come in small packages.





And it isn't always KP who is the interloper. Amber, our cat, loves Adi's bed.

And sometimes Katrin will "borrow" it for a short nap.

Adi loves this nice therapeutic blue bed. Carmen gave it to her several years ago.

Also note KP is wearing different clothing in these various pictures. More than once Adi was displaced by our little granddaughter.

Day at the Houston Zoo Yesterday — MidWeek Blues —

.

This guy was one of my favorites. I like sulpture.

We played with the goats in the petting zoo

We fed the giraffs then gazed at them for a bit

We rode the merry-gp-round

We ate a nice lunch from Grandma's bag

We took pictures a zillion times

The elephants were to KP the most amazing. They were huge!





We came home. KP played circus with Katrin after that.

Can you keep up with an eighteen-month-old?
