Letter "S" --- Friday's Weekend Roundup 10 / Reflections and-or Street/Candid Captures

 - Tom's Requests: Starts with "S"; A Favorite; and Tom's suggestion, "S..."
 - James' request, Reflections and/or Street Photos/Candid Captures.

Starts with "S":   Letter "S" starts for She Shed.  This was Cousin Mary's a few years before she replaced it. Above is Mary's potting and garden Shed. She spent a lot of time here doing things to keep the yard so pretty. In addition to the flower beds you see she also grew few rows of vegetables.

We all had a nice visit. Of course with Southern hospitality we had plenty to eat. I had a nice ham sandwich and chips. Mrs. Jim had brought a Key lime pie and she very nicely divided it into eight pieces. Mary's sister, Nellie and husband had brought some citrus fruit from the Florida orchards, so we all had a tangerine.

Mary died in December, 2020, a couple of years since she bought her new She Shed.  (Her obituary, URL)  We attended her funeral and visited with her family, probably for the last time.

A Favorite:

These Segways aren't for sale, you can rent them.
You are seeing my first ride on
one of these wonderful fun machines.

Roger, Luke, and Mrs. Jim stood in the shade
while we tried the Segways out.

Tom's suggestion, "Silence":   This Segway machine is very quiet, one could sneak up on a person, it transports its rider in total SilenceThey rented them in Telluride, Colorado, and I was next for a test ride. Neither of us rented.

Reflections and/or Street Photos/Candid Captures:  Adi appreciated the yard as a nice place for her walk but I don't think she really appreciated the rain as much as we did. Rain had been very scarce that year.

Check her out in the second picture as she patiently waited for me to finish taking She Shed and other back yard pictures.  Adi died at age 15 after a good life of being our friendly pet Beagle dog.  We also were a Pet Animal Therapy Pair.   Read more here, Adi's Meme.

Grandkid pictures, of course! — Ruby (Red) Tuesday — A Ten Things Meme

Ten things I would not do:

      10. Let granddaughter, KP, drive MY car.
Here she is driving her other grandpa's car. She only went around the block, so I am told. But if she were to drive my car like her mother, Karen, did on her first drive she wouldn't be back until just before dark.

I had to warn Karen that car was not to be taken for spins like she was used to when she was riding her bicycle. She was grounded to the bike for all that stuff still, lasting until she left home for college. Later she liked driving my truck. I will tell about that later, another day. Hold me to it, please, or I will forget.

      9. Call Bill Dickinson at seven o'clock in the morning.
Why not, he called me this morning and I don't even know him? Reason is that he will already be up. Either I'll call him on Saturday or Sunday morning at seven or at five some morning when I get up for the bathroom.

      8. Argue physically with Mrs. Jim.
Why not, does she never aggravate you? Of course she aggravates me. But I will cover that on her annual evaluation which is overdue right now.

      7. Miss a University of Nebraska football game?
Just give me some free tickets and I will show you why not.

      6. Eat an egg when the yolk or white is not cooked solid.
Why not? Did you ever get salmonella from eating a raw egg? I won't even eat a Caesar salad at a restaurant until I find out if there is raw egg in the dressing or not (link on this). Same goes for homemade ice cream if there are raw eggs in the freezing mixture.

      5. Answer anyone who calls me on my cell phone that I can't figure out who it is.
What do I do then? I just push the ringer silence button and let them call away.

      4. Write about all the other ideas I had for this post when Bill Dickinson woke me up at seven this morning with his wrong number call.
Why not? Because I have already forgotten them. I should have written them in my moleskin pocket notebook that I always carry.

If and when I have written down some more of these ten items they might show up on another post. Please be assured there are many, many things I would not do. These ten seven are just some that rang my bell this morning.

What's over your bed? — MidWeek Blues — Not a ceiling fan I hope

      [large picture] [extra large]

I have a ceiling fan over my bed of which I am scared almost to death (blue) if it ever runs when I'm in bed. The little bear is reminding me to not turn on the fan.

What if the fan were to fall on me?

Not is not an uncommon worry. And more men worry about that than do women. Of course women have less sense for danger than men. As a general rule.

"Ceiling fans are a terrific way to keep rooms cool without air conditioning. ... But for safety reasons, you should not hang a fan directly over a bed. ..." (link 1) (link 2)

What's Over My Bed - Post a photo(s) of what is above your bed.- Tell us about it.- Of course, put a link back to Alice at I Was Born2Cree8.- Let all your friends know to come play.- Read the 'rules' there first.

Note: It sounds like a one time thing to me unless you have a lot of junk over your bed.

Random Dozen -- Year End (2009)

It’s that time again! Lidna over at 2nd Cup of Coffee has come up with 12 more questions. Come on and join them. They say that this is the most intelligent reoccurring meme on the web!

      - - - - - - - - - - -

I seldom do this but this one bears some utility. So I will answer selected questions and stuff the rest in at the bottom so you could see how ridiculous things like this can be.

      1. Do you find it gross to share drinks with family? Friends?
Family, okay when they aren't looking. I always drink the last dregs out of the can if stuff in there is still cool and fresh.

      2. What have you learned this year? (You didn't see a question of that weight coming, did you? At least not for #2.)
I learned that I spend too much time on frivolous stuff because somehow I never have enough for the really good things.

      3. When do you dismantle the Christmas decorations?
I don't. Mrs. Jim does that. I do the technical things like wind up the electrical cords and extensions.
I am also in charge of the mistletoe, it stays up all winter.

      4. Something you wish to accomplish before the end of 2009 is:
Done it all, I can't wait for a fresh start in 2010!

      5. How do you feel about winter (after Christmas)?
I don't like the frost on the golf course because it delays play.

      6. Have you participated in after-Christmas sales?
Only when something I want is on sale and that isn't very often.

      7. Do you have plans for New Year's Eve?
Will spend the evening with most of Mrs. Jim's Sunday school class for the class party.
It's also Mrs. Jim's birthday on the 1st so I can have double reasons for kissing her t0night.

      10. How much time per day do you spend blogging? Please do not lie. I will know.
An hour a day, mostly in the mornings and evenings. In addition I spend my extra blogging time on the Photo and Poem Place blog (link) and visiting the blogs of my readers over there.

      12. Share one hope dream for 2010.
I hope that I will dream about getting lost on the way to my classes again. It was at the University of Nebraska and I missed one class until April in the dreams that I used to have. I have not had that dream for some time so I am hoping to have it again.

      13. Is there anything that got to high priced for you in 2009? [large picture] [extra large]
Yes, the price of store bought ice. I won't pay more than 99¢ if I am using my own money. The prices they ask now are ridiculous!
      Not for me to answer:

      11. Who runs your household?
      8. Is there anything special awaiting you in January?
      9. If your life this year was a movie, what category or genre would it be? (Romance, Comedy, Drama, Thriller, Suspense, Farcical, etc.)

You can get questions like this every week there at Lidna's.

Rub a dub dub dub — MidWeek Blues — three four men at chow

Question: What in the world can be blue here.

[large picture] [extra large then click on button on bottom right]

      Answer: Only Jim's jacket.

Since you are here I will tell what is going on in this picture.

      1. The Jim Bunch is eating again. We are at the Garden Cafe at Conroe, Texas. This is a delightful little eating place run by friends, Mr. and Mrs. _________ . The food is delicious with a menu to fit all tastes and hunger levels, the service is pleasant and prompt, the atmosphere is friendly and homey, and the place is spotlessly clean.

      2. We are having our annual Sunday school class teacher and director meeting. Not every year do we meet. Sometimes we don't invite the director.

      3. From left to right is Sam, a retired missionary to Korea; Wendell, a retired corporate executive/owner; Jim (me), twice retired NASA aerospace engineer and college business professor; and Dr. Jim, a retired cardiothoracic surgeon.

We team teach a coed Bible class whose members are mostly age 70 and over.

Sam, the retired missionary is a seminary graduate who knows his Bible and very well. He shares many of his mission experiences to add practicality to the lesson.

Dr. Jim's teaching style I call pseudo preaching. He lays every issue on the line and emphatically makes his points.

I (Jim) say that I do not teach, rather I lead the class through the lesson. My classes have more discussions and member participation that the others. I do not lecture but do keep the class on focus with our scheduled Bible lesson objectives.

Since we all have different teaching styles the class members with this variety generally keep a high degree of interest in our lesson matter.

I do believe that teaching is a my talent given by God. Most all of my life I have ended up teaching. That would be in my army and aerospace engineering careers as well as at San Jacinito College and various Bible class teaching assignments.

I am not saying that I am a good teacher but that this is where and what I end up doing.

      Jim's Sunday Stealing, from this week's list -- 003

This one is not very exciting. It might be more fun to watch the corn grow than stay here very long. I omitted the really dull ones.

      Then: August 1999

      1. Age: Ten years younger

      4. Fun night out: Eating out and movie

      5. My BFFs: Mrs. Jim and Adi, then the five kids and all the grandkids. Note: I am not sure I know what the BFF these are

      9. Biggest concern: Our country is going to Hell in a hand basket

      10. What my biggest concern should have been: Things would get worse, year by year for the next ten.

      13. If I could go back now and talk to myself I would say: Self, you are one okay guy.

      Now: August 2009

      1. Age: Ten years older than 1999

      4. Fun night out: Eating and the movies

      5. My BFFs: Mrs. Jim, Adi, Katrin, the kids and the grandkids

      9. Biggest concern: Our country won't recover fast enough.

      10. What my biggest concern should be: That our country would recover at all

      13. What I think I would say to myself in 10 years: Self, you are an okay guy

      Summary:

      3. What have I accomplished in 10 years that I am most proud of:

Being retired for nine years and still live to tell about it

      4. What have I NOT accomplished in 10 years that I wish I had: Finish recovering from the move and getting my home office in good shape and my old Ford car up and running.

      I'm Home!

Just not in these pictures. They were taken at St. Luke's Hospital in Houston while the doctors were doing my thing.

Tim (son) met us in the parking lot at 5:30 AM Thursday. This nice long line awaited us.

The morning was typical hurry and wait. We had to come early in case the first patient did not show.

From here I would go to the prep room and wait until they took me away just a little after 10:00 . Thank goodness Tim, Karen, Billy, BP, and Mrs. Jim were there to keep me company during my wait.

It has been a long week and a long two days. I am teaching Sunday school this Sunday but worked my lesson pretty well up before I went to Houston.

I was 70% blocked in the artery that they stented, same as the one to my kidney that they will stent. Much more and I might have been hurting. The blockage was in this one before but only about 30% so they didn't stent it then.

These are my cardiologists, Dr. Krajcer is my doctor.
      http://www.leachmancardiology.com/

I am feeling just fine. Zochor will be my trial again dropping Welchol and Niaspan. We will see how the muscle cramps do this time.
      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Simvastatin

Thought you might like to see how happy I looked in bed.

I had to lay flat on my back with my legs straight out for eight hours after they closed the incision in my upper leg. That was where they threaded the stent and stent guiding wires that would fish their way up to my heart.

I was hooked to this machine by radio telemetry. It went to the nurses station as well.

I was discharged just before noon today (Friday, June 27).

We had to go to Karen and Billy's to get Adi and Katrin as stayed there last night. As did Mrs. Jim.

Mrs. Jim wouldn't let me drive. I am on "light duty" for three days. Can't drive or lift more than five pounds. I can do everything else.

It was nice that LSU could hurry and win the College World Series before I had to go in. If they were still playing I would have had to postpone my coming.

      My new haircut

I got me a haircut yesterday. My 'barber' asked me if I wanted my short golfer's summer haircut like I usually get this time of the year.

She was surprised when I told her I wanted this, picture at right which was hanging on her style wall. I told her it was in my preparation plans for transition into a Willie Nelson style.

Like I said before, I'm under the white flag for blogging until about June 1st. So I probably won't post again until around then.

Except for a Ruby Tuesday if I get it done.

      I wish I could -- Why I can't and never will

      Wishes that won't come true:

I wish I could paint -- I don't like to paint rooms or houses, that's all I can paint. I am not artistic

I wish I could sing -- After being kicked out (asked to leave) a church choir (Methodist Church in New Hampshire) I knew that was the end of my public singing. The choir director said I had a bad ear. Before that in El Paso I sang in the choir and in a men's chorus group. I was having a ball.

I wish I could be young again -- This just doesn't work, to make it work would be violating the laws of Mother Nature (i.e. a miracle that only God can perform)

I wish I could go to the South Pole -- This is possible only as a team member in a scientific expedition. I am too old to get hired for even a volunteer position.

I wish I could eat peanuts and all the other good nuts, Peanut M&Ms, pecan pie, and foods containing seeds -- Dr. Said No (colonoscopy doctor) told me not to do this anymore.

I wish I could be an astronaut -- answer similar to why I can't visit the South Pole. I did volunteer once when I was working at NASA Houston Manned Space Center.

I wish I could drive a car 200 miles per hour or higher -- I am afraid to put my trust in the metal and rubber parts of the car. The fastest I have been is 150 mph (240 kilometers per hour) on the Autobahn. And 140 plus just a little bit on the U.S. highways.

I wish I could tell you all the other things I can never do even if I wished I could -- You are bored to tears if you got this far in the blog and I won't bore you any more. If you ask real nice and say you aren't bored I can make a part two for you.

So leave a comment for me and the rest of us. You might even wish to tell me of your unfilled wishes, attainable or not.

You can see this list is pretty silly. That is because I've done everything in life that I really needed to do and have done most of the things I've wanted to do.

So I don't complain (much) for me. However there are a lot of injustices in this world, a few of which affect me, and a lot of hurting people who do need things yet in their lives.

Also, God has been very good to me. But I realize that He is good to ALL his children so I didn't want to boast about that in the post. I don't feel I am any more blessed or loved than any other child of His. Mostly I was in the right place at the right times in my life and choose the right door to open.

Of course I did choose the wrong door occasionally but fortunately then somehow I listened for God's loving voice in time*** and found my way out of the wrong places. So far that is, I am not perfect at all, I have a lot of flaws and do get in a lot of hot water.

*** "whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things."
Philippians 4:8 (New King James Version)

Have you had your car read lately? #012 -- Eyes on the road there, boy!

      [large picture] [super sized]

There's something pretty interesting over this way but I can't remember if I ever knew. It wasn't me. I didn't hang around long enough to see if he ran into those pedestrians ahead. Nothing was in the paper about it so he must have corrected for them while I wasn't looking.

What do we know about this fellow? For one thing, he is advertising for his grandfather's restaurant. In Texas, it might be a pub cause they have really good food. I don't know about the beer, it looked like I think beer should.

Mom used to tell me, "you don't find nice girls at a bar." That was back in the old days, it still might go today. But there were some nice girls in that bar the night we went. We went to eat at the pub restaurant side. Those girls were a part of our party, there are only two good restaurants in that town and both serve beer.

Now for the rest of the story:

That kid's toy John Deere was stolen not long after. Of course it was a bad day at his household. To make matters worse, it was insured as a part of the home contents and the deductible was more than the tractor cost.

You would think either it would be recovered or be lost to him forever.

      [large picture] [super sized]

I found his tractor in a chop shop lot last week. I turned it in to the authorities but it was gone by the time they got over there. Guess I should have called 911, the police said, no, that I had done right. They were just very busy that day. I just hope they hadn't stopped for a donut. I couldn't smell any sweets on their breath so maybe not.

That still wasn't the end. The little tractor didn't get chopped for parts after all. I saw it down the road from us working in the ditches, filling in the wash-out holes, mowing grass, and hauling dirt and trash.

Again I called the authorities, they came faster this time. But they found bad news. The tractor could not be identified as the serial numbers had been ground off. Even those on the axle were burnished smooth.

You do know that's how they caught up with the Oklahoma City bombers,
Timothy McVeigh and Terry Nichols . They didn't know that rental trucks had their serial numbers engraved on their rear differential or axle housing. You've heard about dumb crooks, those guys were at the top of the list.

I will keep tabs on that little toy John Deere. If it wears out so badly it can't do road work it might be up for sale again. I will buy it for that kid. I will also buy him some defensive driving lessons.

I like to buy kids things, check this out from Thursday, June 05, 2008
Tagged: "Getting to Know you Meme" from Jim, Item # 4 (
      link):

"Things I would do if I were a Billionaire:
I already am a billionaire. If I had several billion I would give more $$$$ away to those in need. I would buy hundreds of Big Kids Happy Meals for MacDonald's and pass them out to those who live under the bridges and in the tree settlements and give at least one to every person I see who was holding up a "Work for food" sign."

And this from Monday, August 28, 2006
Sunday Lunch with the Jim Bunch (link):

      .
MacDonald's on Sunday is getting to be a habit with us. Us is Mema, Mrs. Jim, and me.

We all ate for $6.50. Mema had a Double Cheeseburger Happy Meal, Mrs. Jim and I shared a chicken Snack Wrap and we ate most of the French fries from Mema's happy meal. Mrs. Jim and I also had Senior Diet Cokes.

The routine continues, Mema eats half of her Double Cheeseburger and puts the other in her purse for a pick-me-up in the afternoon, then the three of us share two Hot Fudge Sundaes. That makes for three pretty full-up seniors on a $6.50 investment.
      .

      .

The toy is for me. When asked whether a boy's toy or a girl's toy, I opt for the boy's. I would like to have a Hummer collection to go with my other cars and Happy Meal toys.

      .

      .

My Hummer was like the blue one on top. Boy was I thrilled. I haven't opened the cars, like the Beanie Babies, they will be more valuable unopened.

A twist here. This was my second Hummer toy, since my first one went to a little boy who didn't have a Happy Meal, this one would be the first for my collection.

Wouldn't you know it. Here was another little boy with his Daddy and two sisters, none of whom had eaten a Happy Meal. You guessed it, that little boy now has a nice new Hummer MacDonald's toy.

He opened the wrapper quickly too, right after a big smile followed with a very heartfelt "thank you." Maybe next time . . .

      .

. . . next time, I can find still another little boy who needs a bright new Hummer toy.

Adi, About Me (a little meme)

Hi, my name is Adi. I am a tri color beagle with purebred lines. I am eleven, in dog years that would be about seventy-seven. My birthday is September 1, 1996. My full name given to me by Karen is Adi Jane H(xxxxxxx). [large picture] [super size]
      .

      .

      .

I belong to my misses, Karen, and live with my grandparents, Mrs. Jim and Jim. This has been going on for quite a while starting when Karen moved to where I could not be. I have been experiencing the retired life early with Grandma Mrs. Jim and Grandpa Jim in a retirement like community. [large picture] [super size]

Jim and I are registered with the Delta Society (link), and are a certified pet therapy team. Also, we are members of the Montgomery Pet Partners group (link). Our job as a therapy team is to visit those who cannot have a dog because of circumstances beyond their control.

Currently we visit every other Tuesday at an assisted living home in Conroe. A few years earlier we were going every week when there were fewer teams. [large picture] [super size]

My first year I helped tutor a sixth grade boy in reading. With that job, I am now an experienced reading dog. We helped this boy get reading practice and encouragement so that he could pass his state reading test.

I really like to play. Until I hurt my back, my favorite play sport was to get rough with my Teddy Bear. I would grab it by the neck, arm, or ear and shake it very violently.

      http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PcouP_zp4y0

My doctor (Brian Hablinski, DVM) at the Willis Animal Clinic (link) told Jim to have me stop doing this as very likely doing that did hurt my back.

Squirrels and rabbits like to play tag with me too! Always the squirrels run scared up in to their tree. [click pictures for large size]
[click here for super size squirrel] [Adi looking, super size]

The rabbits are a little faster and will run and run until they find some brush to hide in. I could go into that brush and flush them out again, but Jim always calls me back.

Jim and I walk about two times a week, for a long walk, perhaps a couple of miles. We do a nice slow walk where I can sniff to my heart’s content. Well almost. [large picture] [super size]

On my walks, I get to meet a lot of new friends. Here are a black lab, Lucy the other beagle, and Shuffles, a turtle who lives down by the creek.
I really like to go for rides. Both in the car and on the golf cart. When we get to going fast enough, you ought to see my ears flying in the breeze.

When I'm tired, I just love to take a long nap in my double bed. [large picture] [super size]
That's where I stay, in the breakfast room, to help Jim write his blogs. Generally I remind him when it is time for a snack or some coffee.

I forgot to mention that my favorite football team is the GO BIG RED Nebraska Cornhuskers. I sit right there with Jim and we watch every play. [large picture] [super size]

Mrs. Jim and Jim travel quite a bit. When they do I get to stay with Karen or one of my aunts or uncles. They all argue over me as I am in high demand. Even some of the neighbors have asked me to stay with them.

I think Jim is going to let me come to Nebraska this summer for the July 4th parade in Tekamah and to attend Blogstock '08. That all ought to be a blast.

I am a seasoned parader. Last year BP and Mrs. Jim asked me to ride with them in the golf cart. We were all decorated pretty good.

My food likes? Most anything that is edible and that smells halfway good.
My favorite food: Blue Bell Lite vanilla ice cream
      Food I dislike: Oranges

More work on my tag, the fifth item

      .
Mema is feeling a lot better now. The doctors are saying she is about as good as she will get. So she will have to take more medication from now on. As well she will be needing more care.

For sure she won't be going home until Monday, we will see then.

Ok, so now a little more work on my tag again.
      .
      Maybe
Travel Plaza over at Happytraveller will be happy. I'm still not real pleased with this. My last tag post almost made me lose my religion then (link).
      .
This is a little continuation of Tuesday, November 7th blog (link).
      .
If I ever finish it it will be eight things about me. Today will the the fifth one.

      Five.

I have lived in several places. When I was single there were a lot of rented rooms for me.

1320 "C" Street, Lincoln, Nebraska. I lived with my Mom's Aunt and her daughter, Mom's cousin. I decided to go to the University of Nebraska too late to get a dorm room. I had a lovely little room looking out over my cousin's garden and alley.

17xx "P" Street. A friend lived her, I moved there in my second year of college. It was close to campus. Each room had two bunk beds and four dressers. Not very nice for us students.

South of town, by the hospital. I don't know the address, that house has been torn down by now. I couldn't take the cramped little room on 17th Street any more.

28xx "P" Street. I found this nice room with a very friendly couple, it was walking distance to Elgin. I did have my Dad's but I walked the mile to work a lot.

xyz South 14th Street. This was my first apartment. Down in the basement, across from the Nebraska State Capital building, I had a lot of rooms. It was furnished too.

I had dropped out of college and was working at Elgin National Watch factory in Lincoln. This was an enjoyable life, single with a care of my own now, but not too rewarding at work.

At Elgin, I started out at $1.10 an hour running a degreaser machine. That job damaged my sense of smell because of the strong fumes emitted by the vat of chemicals used to dissolve the grease.

In a bit I was promoted to set-up man. There weren't any set-up women. My job was to keep an assembly line running smoothly. I had to keep sixteen women happy with their work. I repaired their equipment and kept their trim knives sharp. The trim knives were used to trim burrs off the brass parts where they had been drilled.

I was the youngest set-up man at Elgin. I think having some college helped me get that job. I didn't ask for it, my foreman chose me. It was all in the same department as was the degreaser operator job.

Sometime in my second year at Elgin we had a reduction in force and I got laid off from my set-up job. To keep from being laid off, I bumped a lady on the watch line. My former line had been making parts for proximity fuses for the Navy.

I never could make my quota on that line. The ladies would do my job for me while I was at lunch, that helped some.

I swear there are ladies' jobs, and this was one. I had to drill two holes in brass watch plates. I have no idea what went in those holes, but I was thinking alone the lines of pinions for little gears.

Just in time to save me as an opening for me to have, running automatic screw machines. Automatic screw machines could make screws out of a piece of metal rod. They could also make knobs with knurls on them, like watch winder stems.

I was at that job for almost a year. I spent a lot of money on my 1952 Ford. It got new fancy upholstery and I hopped it up with a built up Mercury engine.

We didn't have drag strips in those days, but did a lot of street racing. The best place was over on the uncompleted Interstate highway.
      . .
My '52 Ford would out run the 1955 Chevy's, even the ones with Power Packs. It would stay even with the 1956s also. No other stock car could beat it.

My Ford was very loud and I kept getting troubled by the cops police over that. Eventually I traded it for a new 1956 Ford Sunliner Convertible. I saw it on the street one day, he was driving with his wife.
      .
The new buyer of my '52 didn't know it was hopped up, I had put the carburetor back to a stock Ford. He told me it really ran good, and fast, but it's exhausts were very loud.

At my apartment, rent was free. I did have some chores to do for the landlady in exchange in place of my rent. In the fall I was to rake the leaves, in the winter to keep the walks clear and tend the coal furnace. In the spring and summer I was to mow the lawn.

I knew the place was trouble, the landlady had signs all over, like shutting the lights off, setting the furnace differently when I left, and so on. There was at least one sign in every room, most had a lot.

She got after me about raking the leaves. I told her it would be "Monday" because I was working the night shift. That didn't suit her, she wanted those leaves gone for the weekend.

So I said I was just going to leave. The landlady wanted two weeks notice, I told her that to me it was a job and I quite [i.e. take this job and shove it].

About 11xx "D" Street was my next residence was . Here I had a nice room upstairs in a widow lady's home. She rented out her two upstairs rooms.

I don't remember that place very good. Two instances come to mind. The first was the day I got clocked for speeding on 13th Street. I ducked off to a side street before I had to pass the ticketing officer.

I drove around for an hour, then came home. My home was about five blocks from where I got clocked. Wouldn't you know it, I met them on my own street in front of the house.

The officers said they were just giving up finding me and were going back for other speeders. They weren't happy about my running off and added an extra charge to the ticket. Eventually this extra one was dismissed.

My second event was sleeping for 26 or more hours without waking up. A friend and I hitch hiked to Omaha to help sandbag the Missouri River. It was a terrible flood.

I had worked just about steady for 48 hours. We did get a little nap in the YMCA. Most of the work was free, we did work sixteen hours for a contractor, Peter Kiewit. For that sixteen hours we got a nice check.

Eventually I moved for a final time in Lincoln. It was way out past 48th and Vine streets. I was staying with a man and his wife, the man also worked at Elgin.

I had many memories while I lived there. I had my new Ford convertible, I bought a 1941 Chevy play car, was helping a couple of other friends with the 1934 modified stock car racer, started a whole lot more dating, and eventually met my first wife.

That is it for the places I have lived while I was single. The next writing will tell about the places I lived when I was married--maybe the ones when I was single again too.
