Letter "N" -- Friday's Weekend Roundup 12 and Reflections and/or Street/Candid Captures

Letter "N" - This Week's Prompts: Starts with "N." A Favorite. For Tom, "N"ice". For James, Reflections and/or Street/Candid Captures.
 _ _ _ _
P
.
Adi is posing with her aunt and uncle for a goodbye picture. We enjoyed staying with Lois and Jim (my sister and bro-in-law). You have seen most of our local tours. From August 2, 2006 post,
https://jimmiehov.blogspot.com/2006/08/we-say-goodbye-to-iowa-and-goodbye-to.html

Starts with "N":  Now soon I need to see my sister, haven't seen or visited with her, other that messages on the cell phone for probably nine years when she came here.  Next should be my turn.

But I may have waited too long, the ladies in my life think I am too old at 90 to drive that far anymore.  Southwest is having a $39 per flight sale now close like Memphis, $80 to Iowa where Lois lives.  But I wouldn't drive straight through all the way one, up or down, but would and stop and see/visit my cousin in Arkansas who is a couple of years later than my age.

A Favorite: New Driver of my latest Antique?  Car that I got back in 2000 for my retirement present.  I would retire in 2001.  This is our younger granddaughter, now a high school freshman.

CSU April hurricane forecasts FOX Weather©
For Tom, "Nice"Nice to know information, especially for us along the Gulf of Mexico coast.

James, Reflections
and/or Street/Candid Captures:  Seems I might have posted before.  Not sure where is located but feel it's close to our home, southwest of our home.  Sorry 'bout that.

Letter "X" -- Friday's Weekend Roundup 10 / Reflections and-or Street/Candid Captures

[like my last two years driving to High School, then Sister had her turn]

 - Tom's This "Week's Prompts,  "A word with "X." A Favorite. Your Choice."
 - James' request, "Reflections and/or Street Photos/Candid Captures."
 _ _ _ _

My first Car, the 1950 Studebaker Starlight coupe
[picture of my toy 1950 Studebaker Starlight Coupe, a cast iron model of my first car]
[I have quite a few cast iron 1:18 scale toy cars, this one included.]

A word with "X":   "Texaco gasoline pump", old fashioned pump gas measured by what's in the glass jar on top, and my 1950 Studebaker Starlight Coupe.  Be watching as there are a couple of other words with the letter "X" here today.

The fellow on the bench is made of bronze

My Choice: This one is a repeat of one from last week's blog.  My readers may have missed this posting, on it I had a lot of the lake pictures out the south windows of the Library.  It is sooo Relaxing, I've spent time, but not sharing with the Art Work fellow here, on the other benches while Mrs. Jim was attending her Book Club meeting.

[click on most any  picture here for a larger sized viewing]

 - James' request, "Reflections and/or Street Photos/Candid Captures:  I took this on our supposedly Daily Walk.  There is a reflection, but the wind was so breezy that the disturbed water was not in the mood for reflections.  The brownish cluster spot just beyond the duck's head was a reflection of the second tree cluster from the left.

Mrs. Jim was away with her bridge group on this their playday, so I walked by myself.  I noticed that the smaller, younger ducks were gone.  I think someone must have captured them for cooking.  They would come to a person if that person had some food for ducks.

A Favorite:   Isn't she an excellent Beauty, the truck, that is.  Of course all the ladies featured on my Calendars she being very nicely kept.

"I will always like the 1949 Ford Pickup., it is one of my favorite old trucks.  One like this is what I drove to high school in town for my last two years (the first two years I did not attend a town school, but rather a 10-grade two room country school to which I rode my horse, Minnie).

This one is on the August 2009 NAPA calendar that I have in my collection.  Here is a link to read about me and that truck."  [Collected from my previous Weekend Roundup May 25, 2018 post

The Letter "L" -- Weekend Roundup and Reflections

The thirty-eighth issue of Weekend Roundup for this year, 2020...
(THE TENTH LETTER FOR THIS SERIES)
- the Letter "L" Prompts are:
(A) Starts with the Letter "L";
(B) "Lake" (Tom's Choice);
(C) A Favorite; and
(D) Reflections.

_ _ _ _

(C) A Favorite:  These young Ladies are our (We have four, the fourth lives away for her job) granddaughters, they visited last Sunday.  I had forgotten all about it being Grand Parents Day.  Lucky Me.

(A) Starts with the Letter "L":  Lantern starts with my "L" today.  These are LED lanterns that I bought last year when a hurricane threatened, as then if it came we very likely would loose power.  I had them out again this year but so far those coming up from the Gulf of Mexico have veered into Louisiana instead.  We live about 55 miles from the ocean waters.  The lanterns were three for $19.99.

(B) "Lake" (Tom's Choice):  I'm not sure exactly where we were.  And I'm not sure it is a Lake.  I took the picture in South Africa around Cape Town last winter.

(D) Reflections:  A point along Lake Conroe (Texas, north of Houston) on which our former home's subdivision bordered.
Note the crane and it's Reflection swooping down and along looking for fish.

Catfish are plentiful according to the people who fish. Hint:  enlarge the picture by clicking on it once or better yet click it again.
The lake should have been much higher.  It had been drained for repair after Hurricane had done damage to much of the dam.  But after getting it filled the city of Houston needed water from it due to drought like weather conditions.
_ _ _ _

Bonus Questions:

1.  What is your favorite "L" word?   Mine First would always be the Lord.  After that will be Lois, my sisterhttps://jimmiehov.blogspot.com/search?q=lois She lives about 1400 miles north of us so neither of us hardly drive that far anymore.  Last time we were up was July 2017.  We had been thinking of going up this year to Eastern  Iowa to see her but Mother Nature's new Corona Virus strain #19 put a nix on that.  Next year?  She a daughter near us but they are able to drive the distance regularly to see Mom.

2.  Tell about one of your experiences with water birds.    Just around the corner is the rough area of the golf course with a steep bank going into the water.  Adi and I would walk there and Adi saw a crane or egret watching for a fish down in the water, she would chase it off.  She liked to see them go flying away.

— Six Word Saturday —

.
my six words:
Sister clueless — she has the hat

Once more I have given my sister, Lois, this moth eaten hat.  She doesn't know it yet but she will find it soon I am sure.  It is under something, something that goes with her back to Iowa.  I put it there when I visited her at her grand-daughter's home here in Houston this fall.

I don't know how old the hat is but when I first got hold of it was in 1978. It was the year my niece, Barb, was married. Our daughter, Karen, was four and she was the flower girl.

Karen made it up to the front of the church but then when she saw her Aunt Lois (my sister) she sat down beside her and there was no more flower girl.

When we were ready to leave the church no one was there except Lois's, my parents, and our family. This hat was hanging on a coat hook and I asked Lois about it. She said it had been there for a couple of years.

I took it over to her house when we left. I hung it on her hall tree and promptly forgot about it. The next time she came Houston way she brought it down to me. I really didn't want it but I had it.

So the next time we went up to see her in Iowa I brought it back up and left it in her house without telling her. From that time on for several years we had the game of "bring the hat and hide it in your house." That is why I am calling it "our" old hat.

I think the moth holes came while at her home.  It was old but in nice wearing shape when I found it in the church.

It has been at our house now for quite a few years without me trying to get it back to her. But that has ended, for now.

This article's beginning was in a previous post I wrote earlier this year before this latest trade.  Read the earlier one here (link) .

Chocolate Pie Turnover — MidWeek Blues — the "Iowa Way"

.
As you can tell, I'm back from Iowa and have started to catch up with my blogging craziness cravings.

I have been staying with my sister, Lois, who lives in Iowa. I rode up with her and hubby, Jim, a week ago Monday and then flew back yesterday courtesy of Delta Airlines and my savings account.

Mrs. Jim stayed home this time. She had the pets with her though, Adi, Katrin, and Amber

Lois is a very nice host (link to prior blog about her taking Mrs. Jim and me to Joensy's, picture below, left, of her eating a pork tenderloin sandwich--she treated me there again this time!). We certainly didn't hurt for food while I was there.

Her brother-and-sister-in-law, John/Jack and Mary Lou also came to visit us on Wednesday. Mary Lou had made and brought the most delicious butternut squash pie I have eaten. Well, it was the first one also but it was really good. When she brought it in we thought it was my favorite vegetable, pumpkin pie.

Lois had made this chocolate pie and baked an apple crisp cobbler too. After we had eaten generous portions of all three, Lois stacked them in her refrigerator with the chocolate on top. Wouldn't you know it fell out top down onto the floor.

Lois saved the day for us. She carefully scraped the remaining meringue off and with the leftovers during our stay we finished it off with whip cream. Well, we didn't exactly finish off the chocolate pie OR the squash pie.

Mary Lou took both leftover pies home with her.

Bicycle for two — Ruby (Red) Tuesday

I have to confess, this bicycle might not be for two. We found it parked beside our hotel in Levanto, Italy (Link: Mrs. Jim in picture at Levanto). But it reminded me of the bike that my sister and I shared. It was a girl's bike, a pre-WWII Elgin, sold by Sears Roebuck.

Dad ordered it from the catalog. I was really excited when he said I could come with him to go down and get it at the railroad depot. I still remember that and helping to put it together. Ours was blue, not red. But it was a real pretty one. My sister, Lois, still has it in her garage or basement. She is the designated keeper.

I was allowed to ride it to school where I was to be in the first grade. The seat would not adjust down low enough for me to get on so Dad made a lowering seat holder. It was made of a steel rod bent down about six inches and then extended in front like a hook to place the seat onto it.

Since Lois was five years younger than it was, we had to take turns after she was in the second grade. Lois started the first grade when she was four. That was way to young to ride a bike on the roads for a whole mile, up hill and down hill, so she had to walk that first year. Unless I took her on the carrier which I often did.

Added notes:
1. As those commenting noted, people in general were very poor back in those days. I don't know how we managed a new bike, there must have been a very good corn crop that year. I never had a tricycle nor did I have an electric train. Lois and I shared many items. Mom made most of our clothes from feed sacks.
2. If some of you are older and have forgotten how to ride a bicycle, Dr. Jim has addressed the problem of having to relearn this vital skill. Please click here.

Flashback Friday # 3 ~ My Sister, Lois

This is # 11 for Linda but only # 3 for me. You see I will never catch up.

Lois 'baby' sits dogs for her son and grandchildren. She has never said yes to my request for her to 'baby' sit Adi. Probably she thought I wasn't being serious.

.
Linda from Mocha With Linda has started a new meme! This one's going to be fun. Each week she will ask us a question, and we post our answer! It will be something to bring about a memory of some sort to share!

We are supposed to answer the following questions: (you might like to join in with this one or see others' posts, just click on the button on the right.)

It got a little long this week. I couldn't possible write about all this:

Do you have siblings? (If not, keep reading - I'll get to you.) How many and are they boys or girls? Where do you fall in the birth order? How did you view your "spot" in the family compared with the others? If you are the oldest, did you resent the things the youngest got to do that you didn't? If the youngest, what did you want to do like the older ones? And if you are more of a middle child, how did that impact you? How do you think your birth order shaped your personality? Did you and your siblings like each other growing up or did you fight all the time? Are you close now? Or at least friends with each other?! What memories stand out about you and your siblings?

If you are an only child, how did you like that? Were you glad to have all the attention or did you want to have a brother or sister? What advantages were there to being an only child? What disadvantages? Which side of the fence is greener?!

For everyone, did your sibling experiences (or lack thereof!) affect your decision to have kids or to have a certain number?

So here goes:

Yes, she is named Lois.

I am the older of two, Lois is the younger.

I loved being the older and didn't resent anything Lois got that I didn't. Most things we shared. Like our bike. Or Dad's horse, Minnie. I did get to ride Minnie to high school and Lois didn't. They tore the school down before she got that old.

We also shared Dad's pickup to drive to school. We drove it to the town high school. The country high school was only through the tenth grade.

Any time we shared you must keep in mind that Lois was five years younger. That meant I had use of whatever five years before she got old enough most times.

One thing that didn't work out very good was the bedroom. Our house only had two bedrooms so when Lois was ready for her own room apart from the folks' that meant I was ousted to the front porch. Grandpa and Dad screened and glassed it in. But there wasn't any heat. In the cold winter mornings there would be frost on my blankets.

I think we both are like the middle children. I don't know what happened to those on the outside.

And fight? We fought a lot in a friendly manner. I teased a lot and still do. About three years ago she got on to me about being too rough on her because of all the Midwest tornadoes. We don't have those down here along the coast. Ours are very small mild ones if and when we have any. I would tell her I couldn't come up to Iowa to visit because of those tornadoes.

I think she remembers best how I taught her to avoid smoking cigarettes. By some illicit means known only to me I had acquired a pack. We went down to the creek and 'smoked.' I think Lois smoked two.

She claims they made her sick. I only remember a lot of coughing and meaningless words from her. To this day I can't recall how I ever convinced her to 'smoke' the second.

My other favorite memory is teaching her to drive Dad's pickup. I taught a lot of girls and women to drive, maybe even ten. My kids count for two of them. Lois was always a bad driver. Once on the way home from school she ran over a neighbor's mailbox. Another time later in life she ran right into someone and totaled out a very nice Oldsmobile she and hubby, Jim. W, owned.

Lois had had no effect on me having five kids. This is the most I had written keeping on subject for a meme in ages. So I will quit. Go read the others by clicking on the logo above to find them at Linda's. Or click here.
.
You will find more about Lois at the sister label below. Click it and read.

Adi Beagle Dog, Sister — MidWeek Blues — Happy Days

[large picture] [extra large]

Adi is happy. She is used to posing for her best pictures but this one is unposed.

And why is she happy? Look down on the page.

[large picture] [extra large] [large picture] [extra large]

[large picture] [extra large]

And my sister, Lois (link), is happy. Seems there is always a little job that somehow just waits for her.

Lois and husband, Jim W, are visiting their daughter's family who live south of here. Also getting away from the colds of the Iowa plains. Isn't their timing wonderful? I am glad they could spend a couple of days with us.

Lois' grandson is playing in a school basketball tournament this week. And her granddaughter is performing at a college basketball game.

My brother-in-law, Jim W, did not bring his golf clubs this time. It may be that the only day warm or dry enough was this Monday but we didn't go. We cancelled the Tuesday tee time because it rained Monday night.
.
Oh yes, the bear. It is almost new but Adi tore a hole in the neck playing 'bear' (YouTube link). I put it in a sack so no more stuffing would get loose and put it on the shelf.
Funny how I remembered that I had put it up there while Lois was here.

Cold in Duluth -- MidWeek Blues -- Happy Birthday Sister!

My favorite (and only) sister, Lois

My sister, Lois, is celebrating her birthday! She is standing on the first cement pad waiting for the ship to come into the ship canal at Duluth, Minnesota.

She called me from that pad to let me know that she should be on the Web Cam. You can watch the ships come if you'd like, click here.

This is what Iowa people do for relaxation. They need rest from all the excitement there in Iowa, the place "where the excitement begins" as stated on the welcome signs when you drive in.

Her green jacket is a heavy one for cold weather. I have one like it. We call it our green Pioneer jacket. Dad sold Pioneer Seed Corn for quite a while and he gave us these jackets for Christmas one year.

I do hope Lois gets down here to Texas this winter when it is really cold up North.

Last year's picture below. Click here for the whole last year's blog.

I remember when I turned 70, I wanted to run away. I had told Mrs. Jim and started to make my plans.

Of course I would come back in two weeks (I promised Mrs. Jim that).

About that time Karen's friend decided she couldn't run the New York City Marathon and so she invited us to come with her instead. ( And I hadn't even decided where to run away to yet!)

So I ran away to New York City alone with Mrs. Jim and Karen. We had fun.

I am glad you are running away to Minnesota and are enjoying yourself. Of course you did have to take the "Old F**t" along just like I had some of my nice family with me.

Bet it is fun, I know you are enjoying watching all those ships. That beats watching airplanes a long way!

Once more,

Jim's note: When Lois turned 65 I had hacked into her Yahoo e-mail account and sent (from her) everyone on her mailing list a notice and sob story that she wouldn't get very many cards for this momentous birth anniversary.

I don't have her password or the addresses any more so this will have to do.
