Poppy Candle with Tin/Holder ~~ Warm Heart Wednesday No. 013
This is a "Poppy" Candle Holder that I found when I unpacked. It must have belonged to Mom but I can't remember ever seeing it before. It would make a good Valentine.
The candle is center top in the picture above (the wick is melted into the top surface). It fits into the bottom side of candle tin. Close the lid for storage and I suppose for snuffing the candle out also.
I couldn't find one like it on line but there were other bits of Poppy ware. Antiques Road Show would probably say "Two Bucks" but I won't ever be able take it there. I wouldn't sell it for $2.00 either.

BED OF OG
While browsing through the Bible once
I ran across the queerest thing:
A Bashanite of giant height
Upon his nation’s throne was king.
His name was Og.
There is no record whether he
Was dull or smart or sour or gay.
He had a bedstead made of iron—
That’s all the Bible has to say
About this Og.
He must have used a lot of room!
They laid a tapeline on his bed;
From side to side it was six feet wide
And fifteen feet from foot to head.
Some man, this Og!
I wonder, was he cruel or kind?

Golf, rides, ranches, and work — Ruby (Red) Tuesday — My Week Meme
This blog post will be of my activities since last Tuesday. Just a lot of the pictures will have red in them, I did my best. A few don't. I did do a MidWeek blues about doing my income tax. The tax got done on April 15th.

On April 13th, Tuesday, a group of men from Mrs. Jim's Sunday school class has been golfing. I started golfing with them a couple of months ago. This week we played the Cape Royale at Cold Spring, Texas. The course borders on Lake Livingston and is very pretty. The hills are not real steep.
While I was playing with the men, Mrs. Jim played our course with the ladies here. She regularly plays on Tuesdays with the ladies from here and also plays Fridays with three other close 'buddies.'

On Thursday Adi had a Vet appointment in the afternoon to get her ear checked out. I had an infection and we had been putting medicine in it for over a week.
Did I mention before that last Saturday we passed our Delta Society certification good for another two years. We will be able to continue visiting the nursing homes, hospitals, schools, libraries, etc. as a pet therapy team. This may be our last time to test, both of us are getting pretty old. Adi is 13 in dog years. She loves to visit the residents with me at Hearthstone, our local assisted living home.
Later on Friday afternoon I went into town (Conroe) for gas and some groceries. The H.E.B. grocery store is one of my favorite, the prices are good there. Adi and Katrin needed dog food.
I like to stop at the cooking connection for samples. Friday's are the best days to go. The fellow pictured was cooking shrimp and marinated steak. Both were excellent.
Another lady was making fajita and they were great too. Those two stations had wine 'tasting' and there was another lady passing out a couple of local beer sample glasses.
On the way home the road was petty full, especially the right hand lane which should average about 75 mph. It is supposed to be the fast lane but we weren't even going the speed limit of 65 here.
On Saturday we were having Mrs. Jim's Sunday school class picnic at the ranch of members Don and Charlotte. It was 450+ acres, which is small for a Texas ranch. But for East Texas that is fairly large. Don's major problem there is wild hogs. The come in and root around for worms, etc, which does a job on the grass, tearing it out and digging holes in the soil.
For lunch we had BBQ beef brisket and sausage links, both beef and deer. I like both. The members brought the food to go with the meat, like potato dishes, salads, and deserts. There was food left over but Baptists are noted for their heavy eating at church functions, this was not an exception.
After lunch groups of us rode into the woods for sight seeing.
We were in three mover utility trucks, two red and one green, and then these ladies were on the four wheeler. The hog damage was quite evident. Please enjoy the pictures.

This is the kid with the fishing pole (did you see the red reel it had?). He is photogenic like Adi. Saying they both like to 'pose' but nothing about how their pictures turn out. I think both are popular with viewers and readers(here) .
The ride home was uneventful. Mrs. Jim drove more than half the way home. Going up I was alone because she went after Golfing on Friday. The ladies played bridge most of the night I hear.
These are a few of the Texas Wildflowers. This is a scrawny bunch I took right after changing drivers. Right after that I slept until we turned off the Interstate 45 at Willis, Texas, onto our road. Home was just six miles down.
Sunday was a go to church-rest up-work on my poem blog (link) day.
Today, Monday, as I write this, I am putting away my records for income tax and other junk so that year 2009 can hide away.
Tomorrow, Tuesday, I am playing golf again. This time it will be at the Texas National Golf Course here in Willis. If it is cart path only I won't go because my foot wouldn't take all the walking in golf shoes.
I might golf anyway and wear my tennies. My feet like them better anyway. I wore tennies on Wednesday as they would not honor my handicap flag.

On Wednesday my brother-in-law, Jim W, from Iowa and a good friend, Everett, played golf at the Pasadena Municipal Golf Course. My sister (Lois) rode along with her husband.
I rode with my friend, Everett. We have been friends since 1976, I was also a very good friend of his father. Everett is 93 years old and his father was 99 when he died. Everett beat me by five points, he shot a 98 while I had a 103.
You see in the above picture Lois retrieving on of our balls that had gone into the roadside ditch. Click on the picture to make it larger, then click again to make it really big so you can see her better climbing up out of the ditch. I believe Lois found almost two dozen balls that day, only a couple belonged to us.
On Friday, Mrs. Jim played golf with some ladies here. Most Fridays when she does that Adi and I ride up to the club house with her and walk home. Adi really enjoys her walks.
Last week the flowers were perking up after the cool wintry weather. You can tell that Adi likes yellow flowers about as well as red.
There were others out walking and running too. On the sidewalk/golf cart side way below you can see a lady running with her dog. There were only slightly more people than dogs out Friday.

2010 Census — a stupid question? — MidWeek Blues —

Okay, it isn't stupid but of what value can it possibly be to the U.S. government?
I was tempted to not answer but decided they just might want $5000 from in (possible fine for not answering the question). Or I could mark a wrong answer. I wasn't going for an 'A' grade anyway. Nothing I have found tells about telling a lie on this form.
Remember I say lying is not a sin unless it brings harm to someone or is malicious.
The U.S. Bureau of Census, FAQs Site (link), does state that there is a $5000 penalty for not answering any numbered question on the form.
Oh yes, there isn't a penalty for being late. I had lost my form but they mailed me another.

The Jim Bunch eats again — Six Word Saturday — Just Jim this time
My favorite grocery store is H.E.B.
[large picture] [extra large]I like the H.E.B. stores (link) because of their Cooking Connections. Here they actually cook sample items of food to give away as a promotion. There is always a sale price involved or a buy one get one free give away offer.
The lady who runs this Cooking Connection in the Conroe, Texas, store is dressed in a cute red uniform. I wished you could see her but she was bending down behind the counter to pick up some more materials.
All over the store there are other food samples. My favorite is the white cheddar cheese.
[large picture] [extra large]This day she was making gumbo. I like all kinds of gumbo, my friend Lynn made me some for when I came home from having my latest stent put in (pictured in this link). There was a little bit of rice in the bottom of the bowl before she dumped the gumbo in as was Lynn's.
This gumbo was seafood, you can see one of the shrimp. I had already eaten another and there were more in my bowl.
The sweet potato dish was excellent. It was a warm as was the gumbo. The lemon whipped desert was cool. It too was excellent. But the gumbo was the best.

After I had finished eating my gumbo, sweet potato dish, and the lemon desert, the cooking lady had a surprise for me. She asked if I liked cooked cabbage.
Wow! Next to pumpkin pie cooked cabbage is my favorite vegetable. So I said yes.
She opened a warming drawer which had a skillet full of cooked cabbage. It was smothered with other goodies that I have forgotten. But you can see them in the picture. This was also an excellent dish.
Another nice thing about the H.E.B. Cooking Connections, they are in H.E.B. stores all over the Houston area, is that they have the recipes for you to take home. You don't have to buy any of their special, the recipes are free.
It was a big temptation to buy a quart of the prepared gumbo, all was needed was some seafood or chicken and sausage, and probably a little more seasoning. Or whatever a person likes in his or her gumbo.
I would recommend the H.E.B. Grocery Store anytime you can find one. While you are there check out the Cooking Connection. I am betting that you won't be dissapointed.

Restaurant closing — MidWeek Blues — Tavern on the Green
NOW I HAVE NO REASON TO GO TO NEW YORK CITY

Why would anyone want to leave Texas anyway? We have the best chicken fried steak and fried catfish in the world right here in Montgomery. Come visit and we will go to this little cafe, the Heritage House! The shrimp equals or betters that was eaten at the Tavern on the Green too.
The main thing the Tavern on the Green had going for it was its location, right in Central Park. That location will help be a factor in it's appraisal at $19,000,000!
BTW, I've only eaten there once, with Karen when she ran the 2003 NYC Marathon.

Cold in Duluth -- MidWeek Blues -- Happy Birthday Sister!
My favorite (and only) sister, Lois
My sister, Lois, is celebrating her birthday! She is standing on the first cement pad waiting for the ship to come into the ship canal at Duluth, Minnesota.
She called me from that pad to let me know that she should be on the Web Cam. You can watch the ships come if you'd like, click here.
This is what Iowa people do for relaxation. They need rest from all the excitement there in Iowa, the place "where the excitement begins" as stated on the welcome signs when you drive in.
Her green jacket is a heavy one for cold weather. I have one like it. We call it our green Pioneer jacket. Dad sold Pioneer Seed Corn for quite a while and he gave us these jackets for Christmas one year.
I do hope Lois gets down here to Texas this winter when it is really cold up North.

What is this thing? -- Ruby (Red) Tuesday -- A quiz
I found it at church. Mrs. Jim was doing some work there and it was sitting on the table.
Since it is new there is an invoice which details brand and everything. Only problem is that the envelope is home and I am away visiting.
Mrs. Jim is here so I asked her. She said, "Scott knows." I told her that I had written on the envelope but I needed to know NOW for the blog, Ruby Tuesday in RED.

Technically, it is a Cuban instrument called Shekere.
Our church bought the one in my blog (below) to play along with the percussions. Mrs. Jim said they played this Sunday but she did not know that I would need to have information for the blog.
From the City of Marinette, Wisconsin, Web site, here is their blurb:
Quite a few of you thought it might be a gourd. That is correct. I do know how you would know the name unless you were familiar with these. I learned a lot about music makers made from gourds.
Most either rattle or are beaten or both, like the Shereke has both sounds. The rattle is a loud rustling of the beads. The one I posted should sell for around $50. Ours could also be a Xequerê from Brazil. Our music minister knows the answer to this question and also where we got it. Probably NOT Cuba.

I taught an entrepreneurship class at the college, I do believe I could have done a little consultant work with these people. Whatever business they are/were trying they need/needed some help.
