.These old shoes have been with me through a lot. They've been to dozens of states and almost as many countries. I once left them in Iowa (link) and had to change my life for a while. They've sttod with me, holding me up when I feel like falling. Cheerful, them, they feel sorry for me when I might want to cry. Too, they literally stomp when I heartily laugh.
Update!! Update!! We came home this evening around 7:30. We took a cruise from New York City to London, leaving home May 31 and arriving in Dover, U.K. on June 15. It was very, very, nice. We rode over on the Pacific Princess ship.
Our ports of call were Halifax, Nova Scotia (Canada), three stops in Iceland, and two more in Scotland. Then we spend two more nights in London and went North to see a couple in Northampton who we had met on another cruise. I will blog about our travel in the future.

A 'Texas Breakfast for Seniors -- Ruby (Red) Tuesday -- The Jim Bunch Eats again!
When I was teaching* I would allow my students to eat and drink in class. Many were commuter students who were just settling down from their urban drive and parking hassle. Others only had ten or fifteen minutes between classes.
A very large population of Texas women, young and old, have a Dr. Pepper and their chocolate candy bar for breakfast. A lot more than for the men.
My own personal name for this morning treat is "Texas Breakfast." For the Dr. Pepper the calorie count is about 140 and my favorite candy bar, KitKat, 220 (total 360). Too many for most sedentary seniors.
My 'Texas Breakfast for Seniors' is unlimited amount of black coffee and one, just one, Girl Scouts Thin Mints cookie. Total calorie count of 40. Zero for the coffee and 40 for one cookie. That is how I stay so thin.**
About the coffee, we use Community Coffee, Dark Roast. Their slogan is "Still One Pound." Community Company is a leading industry of New Orleans, Louisiana. Their coffees are a mainstay of Southerners for their morning coffee. If you can get it in your area try some. It is THE BEST.
Notes:
* I was a Business Professor at San Jan Jacinto College in Pasadena, Texas. It is a community college for surrounding Houston students. Our enrollment is a little less than 25,000 students (statistics link). I generally taught three business law classes, one entrepreneurship class, and one introduction to business class. Most semesters one of my classes would be an evening class.
** Not my usual breakfast. Usually I eat one half a granola bar with my coffee for 90 quick morning calories (link). I share the other half with Mrs. Jim for her similar breakfast. Then later for an 'energy pick-up' I have a couple (two) no fat soda crackers with peanut butter with more coffee for another 100 or so calories.

Happy St. Patrick's Day! -- Ruby (Red) (Green) Tuesday -- The morning after or the night before?

Actually it was both. After the night before our 42 game (played with dominoes) with friends at our house. This too is the night before, when an other couple came for Irish supper and socializing.

We had a very nice ride over from Killarney to Dingle.
Karen and Billy came with us this time. They rode on the Leprechaun Tour dolphin searching boat.
Another day we went to the Blarney Castle. Yes, I kissed stone again, people were saying I wasn't full enough of Blarney. Karen is doing it here. A person has to lay on her back to get her face down there to the stone.
Our last day was at Powerscourt. The garden there was where I fell and broke my kneecap the spring before. I had to come back home for more doctoring that time.
These are some 'road pictures' I took during our drive over to Powerscourt.
The food was exceptional there. We ate in the Pubs quite a bit. When mussels are the menu I generally have them. My next choice is fish and chips. The Jim Bunch doesn't miss many meals. I am not sure what Billy was eating.
One day we went to the city of Cork. Cork is fairly congested on Saturdays, the market is open that day. Billy couldn't find a parking place so he drove around the (large) block one time and we were finished cooking. For one thing we wanted to see where all the good food we had been eating came from.

Swamped -- or why I haven't posted lately
My sister was visiting from Iowa. It was 5°F up there the first night she was here. We are in the mid 70's.Here Lois and Mrs. Jim are inspecting the cow at the Blue Bell Creameries. We did a nice tour ($2.00 senior rate and included two dips of our favorite ice cream).
My niece and husband and family live on down south of Houston. They are the main reason for the visit. But generally they always spend a few days with us. They have the record for time spent in our guest room.
Anyone else coming to visit Houston is always welcome to use it as well. We are a very good place to spend the night coming in to avoid the rush hour Houston traffic. They leave the next day or a couple of days later (or stay a while).
Brother-in-law, Jim W, came here also. He didn't bring his golf clubs but may borrow some before they week is over.
After the creamery we went to several antique stores and antique malls in Brenham. Mrs. Jim didn't buy anything, Lois got another plate for her green old set of serving dishes.
This morning before send-off we had breakfast at our Club. See, the Jim Bunch Eats once more. Mrs. Jim had an 8:30 tee time so she had to skip for this time.
This was my plate. I had a omelet with two types of cheese, ham, bacon, sausage, mushrooms and onions. It was really good. That is salsa on the end for dipping my bites and catsup up front for smearing some bites. I put catsup on the sausage patty and potatoes. In the background is a small plate of fruit and a tasty biscuit. I topped it off with ample (several cups) coffee. 
[large picture] [super size] Mrs. Jim had made it back in time for a little more chat and to guard her car while BIL Jim W. backed out of the driveway. We had a nice send off.
They are good folks, we had independent backing on this opinion as our dogs like them both really well. They will stop by on their way back up north.

Have a blessed and merry Christmas!
The message of Christmas
is that Jesus is God's Son,
born to be the King whose
universal rule can never end.
We bought this nativity set in Bethlehem, Israel, in 1980. There are many more pieces but these we have had out all year long and just didn't get the rest out this year.
Mrs. Jim had given the angel to our friend who died of cancer this year. It was returned to us after her death.

Our prelit tree is in its third year now. One strand of lights did not work and we could not find the trouble. My suggestion, buy a $1.49 set of 50 lights at Michael's and put them over the nonworking lights. Then another string went out, Mrs. Jim put a string she had here over them.
Mrs. Jim has always had an angel at the top of her trees all the time we have been married. We may have had this angel for those 35 years, perhaps not quite that many. She decorated it basically with a gold motif this year, it is pretty in the daytime also. (Hint, I would super size it if I were you.)
Tonight there are packages under the tree but I did not take a new picture for that. Most are red or red with figures, a few are versions of green. I think I saw a gold one.

[large picture] [super sized] Our stockings are hung on the fireplace. From left to right, Mrs. Jim, Katrin, Adi, and me. The red on the lower left is a poinsettia that a friend gave Mrs. Jim. We got another one tonight at the church. The preacher said they are fire hazzard (fire department said) so we would be a big help if every family took one home.
Tomorrow our family is coming up from Deer Park, Pasadena, South Houston, Houston, and Katy (all in the greater Houston area along Interstate 10). One daughter-in-law and one grandson will be absent. Mike's mother-in-law broke her foot and three ribs and has been staying with another daughter, Sharon will be with them. Grandson, Tim, will be in California with his wife as they live there now.
Update!!! Tim and his wife drove straight through to her mom's home getting there yesterday evening. They came here just after three on Christmas afternoon.

[large picture] [super sized]This is another of our Thursday (remember that foggy day?) walk pictures. Adi was serious in determining her favorite color. Others are coming.
Adi likes her profile picture pose best but I just about always ask her to smile at the camera and say cheese. I gave in for this one as it is just real nice.
The green color, Adi's for today, is the color of the ivy climbing the brick wall surrounding a future addition to Bentwater down the street a little from our house. (link)
I am not in favor of having ivy or any other plant growing up brick walls as eventually it dislodges the mortar holding the bricks together and in place.
For houses it is especially bad because it provides a perfect path for termites and wood loving ants to crawl up and in. There should always be several inches of only foundation before the home area begins.
Not only does it discourage insects from crawling up and in but also is a hedge against a few inches of water standing from a heavy rain. We had 33 inches of water inside our former home, that would have required a high foundation or stilts.
We are busy making holiday preparations here, this morning I addressed and stuffed (wrote on a few who moved away) Christmas cards for the members of my Sunday school class. In the afternoon I finished preparing for today's lesson which I will teach.
The kids and families are coming up for Christmas day so Mrs. Jim has the menu planned for the Jim Bunch Eats. It may be fine tuned as individual requests come in. They had better hurry with that because she already went into town for grocery shopping yesterday.
I also winterized our lawn sprinkler system. If we don't do that the check valve gets too cold (if we get down below freezing) and breaks the plastic flapper inside. Would you believe we can't replace the flapper by itself, we have to buy a whole new check valve.

Ruby (Red) Tuesday -- Iowa has some red
I don't really believe that one bit, I haven't found much to get excited about there.
Iowa does have a couple of things going for it, my SISTER lives in Iowa (north of Cedar Rapids) and there is some RED around there to be found for this blog.

Lois (My sister) lives in Center Point, Iowa. I like this travel plaza, it is about a half mile from her home. We can go there and buy a Senior Diet Coke for a quarter at the McDonald's and then we can use the free WiFi at the plaza for as long as we want. We do eat if we stay through lunch or supper time.
Hint, Lois has dial-up. She is the only person in her county who does not have high speed. Like Mrs. Jim and I are one of three families in Montgomery County (Texas) who still use an antenna to get our TV.
Dad lived his last couple of years in a nursing home at Hiawatha, Iowa. The ladies auxiliary group made these colorful toys and were selling them to help with the activities and facilities.
The next three pictures were taken at Amana, Iowa. At one of the shops--they love tourists--these tractors were for sale. I buy mine at Tractor Supply here in Texas, they are a lot cheaper. Dad had a Farmall Super M as his last tractor while he was farming. Dad also had a toy Super M like this one, I have it now.
We had some really good food at the Ox Yoke Inn there in Amana. I've blogged about that before, check here if you dare see the Jim Bunch Eating there
Above are Mrs. Jim, BIL, Jim, and Sister, Lois. We had just finished eating. That day we even had desert, I had coconut meringue pie.
