Letter "N" -- -- Weekend Roundup and Street/Reflections
THE FOURTEENTH LETTER FOR THIS SERIES - The Letter "N" Prompts are: (A) Starts with the Letter "N"; (B) "Nuts" (Tom's Choice); (C) A Favorite; (D) Street/Reflections; and (E) A Lagniappe.
(B) "Nuts" (Tom's Choice): Above, this is a small bag of small Nuts and Washers. 
I was the youngest Setup Man they ever had, I think my "some college" helped quite a bit.

(A) Starts with the Letter "N": The word, "New", starts with Letter "N". We have a New "Judge Judy" type program here in the Houston (Texas) area called "Relative Justice".
It is on local TV Channel 39 and it's law suits are between Family Members. Sort of okay, I liked Judge Judy better, she is hard to imitate. So far we have watched only one program.
They are from my large box of Bolts, Nuts, Washers, and Screws. It was a gift to me, probably for Christmas. The box is pictured on the right.
When I dropped out of college, U of Nebraska, I needed a job so that I could give my father back his pickup. I didn't tell him until I found a job.
The job that I found was at Elgin National Watch Company, there in Lincoln, Nebraska. A part of the aptitude test was to screw on a whole bunch of Nuts onto bolts sticking out of a wooden box. I screwed on every Nut there was before my time went out. I could do this job with both hands which helped me a lot there.
I stayed on at Elgin until I was drafted into the service three years later. I did well at the factory, I hired on as a Degreaser Operator and after about 15 months was promoted to Setup Man with a line of 16 workers to keep happy with parts to work and well adjusted and sharp, if it involved cutting or stamping, equipment.
(C) A Favorite: Do Not Worry. I won't be climbing into that junk. A New Nashville (Tennessee) project doesn't need all this cement and dirt.
(D) Street/Reflections: A Vanderbilt student on it's Nashville campus.
He seems to be hurrying, I was taught to respect those folk with that type motivation.
(E.1) A Lagniappe: Normality like aura in a crowded Nashville setting.
(E.2) A Lagniappe: Six "N" countries we've visited:

October 3, 2019, in South Africa outside Cape Town, we were headed to a picnic lunch at a winery. The food was super, a five course lunch, but forgettable. Guess I should have looked at the other pictures for a hint.
(D) Street/Reflections: A Walk Picture in the flood prevention/retention depression beside the mailboxes.
(E) A Lagniappe. Walmart "Wall of Honor" for Memorial Day. I took it "Specially" for last week's "W" post. But I did otherwise on the posting side of my plan for it.

(A) Starts with the Letter "I": Investopedia. com starts with an "I". Our newly elected State Representative left the county and state flying in his Private Jet when his power went out last week (ours was out 48 hours and 30 minutes, then it was on and off, up to twelve hours lost at a time).
My newspaper, The Katy Rancher, a Wednesday insert to The Houston Chronicle, reported,
"After losing power Tuesday, G a t e s left his home via his private jet Wednesday night and traveled to Orlando, Fla., . . . "I guess G a t e s took Senator Cruz's lead," one Facebook user wrote. . ."
Oh yes, he told a reporter, "I was able to meet with (one of my major venders) . . . and have dinner with their office personnel."
G a t e s ' s supporting business is a large flock of rent houses.

(B) "Ice" (Tom's Choice): Ice and snow last Monday morning (2-15-2021). Our older daughter slipped on the ice and broke her femur, up high near the joint. But she was able to have it pinned, screwed together, and a rod inserted inside, so that she was only in the hospital three days.
(C) A Favorite: After our New Zealand east and south side cruising we headed west to Tasmania. We loved petting and feeding the 'roos', and seeing all the other animals.
This was our last picture (I think) that we took in Sydney where we spent four days. Our plane left in the afternoon so we spent a very nice morning in a beautiful garden. If you guess the warm January breeze was blowing fairly hard you are correct.
(D) Reflections: My oldest granddaughter sent me this photo, it was taken at the O'Reilly Houston Auto Show. This yellow 1995 Mustang may have been her college car that she sold to a fellow in Florida.
For her it was a hand-me-down old yellow Ford given by her mother. She cared for and kept it all five college years while getting her BA and Master's Degrees in Accounting, and even several more into her working life and marriage. The buyer restored it and added the roll bars.
(E) A Lagniappe.

We came home from South Africa January 2020. It was a thirty day cruise from Dubai to Cape Town, we were gone from December 3 to January 10. Oh yes, we had to cancel a May Transatlantic cruise from Miami to Barcelona due to the COVID-19 mess. It would have visited places we hadn't been including North Africa, Casablanca might have been our favorite.
(2) What is your favorite Word starting with "I"? Mine today will be "Igloo". When it got so cold, even in our house with no heat or electricity for 48 hours straight, our noses and ears got very cold, Then I thought of the Eskimos who live in their small snow/ice igloos all winter long. Yes, some still do that.."

Open again — MidWeek Blues —

.Our newest restaurant will soon reopen under new management (and ownership). The former customers are happy again and will be happier yet when it opens up in March.
.
This restaurant and another's of the previous ownership had been shut down because of nonpayment of taxes. I hope the lesson has been taken to heart by the new owner and there won't be any more problems. I blogged about that back in November (link).
.
Now just have good food. I don't know whether the saloon or the steakhouse will become the predominant revenue producer. We probably won't patronize either (those are my designated driver parking places with the blue signs) very much as we mostly head the other direction from our house and go into Conroe, our country seat, for eating out.
.
Our closest town, Willis, Texas, is 'growing 'a business center with a lot of fast food places at the I-45 Interstate Freeway connection. We've had MacDonald's, Jack-in-the-Box, and a chicken place and a Taco Bell in two of the gas stations. New is What-a-burger, Chick-fil-A, Pizza Hut, Wendy's (or could be Burger King as no sign up yet), Little Caesar's, and a new Taco Bell not in a gas station.

Montgomery, where our Post Office is located, has other restaurants but they are mostly 'in town' where the little antique shops and the like are located. I go there for back therapy right now but other than that and for taking visiting company there for shopping and eating it is in the wrong direction from us.

Patriotic?? — MidWeek Blues —

The trouble is that patriotic people pay their taxes. The owners of this restaurant, the Ransom's Steakhouse and Saloon in Montgomery, Texas, had not been paying the appropriate business taxes. The taxing authorities swooped in and shut the place down and padlocked it tight. Then came the barrels in the driveways.
"...the state of Texas placed a tax lien in the amount of $11,824.37 for unpaid employment taxes dating back to early 2010. A second lien was filed on RSAS Holdings in March in the amount of $15,763.61 for delinquent taxes." (link: YourConroeNews.com[Courier News]) Also according to the Courier the Ransom's owner was behind on his construction loan, food supplier payments, and salaries to the employees.
I didn't go in. My physical therapist said they served really good food. Too bad they didn't pay their taxes. Now I won't be able to eat there.

June 14, 2011, is Flag Day. June 14 has been Flag Day now in the U.S. since 1949, making it a 62 year old tradition. Although it is an official day it is not a national holiday. I believe that it is a state holiday in Pennsylvania.
At the right is our flag for 2011. An additional treat for MidWeek Blues is the smallish looking blue flower peeking out between the flag and the pole.You can see it better below of course. It is one of our Lily of the Nile flower for this year. Most years there are two or three but our hard winter must have changed that for this year. They come up every year. Mrs. Jim's bridge group played bridge yesterday at our house. Although the others know that she has a husband the players all expect their men to be barely heard and not seen.Accordingly I spent the afternoon getting some bills ready to mail, grabbing a cup of coffee and a few of the ladies' snacks, and heading out. I went to the post office, the grocery store, and then spent the remainder of my 'time off' in the library. I did have a book that I had requested to pick up also.
My time at the library was spent in reading the Houston Chronicle and the Conroe Courier. We only take the Wednesday through Sunday Chronicle so this was my opportunity to read the Monday paper for a change.
I learned some things:
Prince Albert II, Prince of Monaco, "hopes to have a family soon". That will include getting married to his fiancée and Olympic backstroke swimmer from South Africa, Charlene Wittsock (link). From my reading I believe that the Prince also includes having a child as a part of having a family.

Blogger, "A Gay Girl in Damascus" had been arrested in Syria. Supposedly she was a young lady of Syrian and U.S. heritage. It turned our 'she' was an anti-government male. Perhaps you have read some of her blog.
Blogger, Tom MacMaster is now safe in Istanbul, Turkey. I do not know if he will continue his/her blog or not. He believes in a cause. We will see.

"He never talks about his faith." This could be our President Obama. I fault him for that. But this time it isn't. It was said about our Governor (of Texas) Perry by one of his spokesmen, Mark Minor. "He grew up a United Methodist" and now "Attends" Lake Hills Church of West Austin, Texas.
The article was about Governor Perry's contributions to his church. Over the last 10 or so years he has given an average of 0.5 percent of his income to his churches. Lake Hills Church has NO RECORD of his giving since he has been in attendance there. As a Christian myself, I have always heard that we are to "walk the talk." Governor Perry does a lot of talking. We will check out his walking in other areas before we give him a final grade.

A gigantic ash cloud from Chile has arrived over Australia and New Zealand shutting down most all air flights there. From what I read this could last the next several days.

A new church, has started in Houston. It is for people who like to take naps. Nap taking is encouraged during the services. The Southern Naptist Convention was held here (Houston, Texas) on Sunday, June 12 at the 14 Pews.Benefits of napping and meditation were a large part of the discussions. The Chronicle didn't have pictures but the Houston Press had twenty of them. Click here to view them. Click here to read the Houston Press story.
A group of napping devotees started the organization to promote napping under various circumstances (work, church, etc.). It evolved into a church/religion. Sunday nappers have 'naptures' when they meet. There is a 'naptism' meaning scattering feathers on new members who wish to join.
Their goals are to encourage people to become better rested and to remove the stigma given to taking naps.
An aside. In my office at the college one bookcase beside my desk had an upside down box. Under the box was a TV. I used the TV to watch Matlock which helped me somewhat in my teaching of Business Law classes. After Matlock was finished I would take about an hour nap. In fact, I had a nap today (Monday) first thing while the ladies played bridge.
I might be a good candidate for this new Church of the Napists.

Reminiscing: Six day underwear relived
Six day underwear relived (link). It was an old post about a Japanese wannabe invention that made the Wall Street Journal.That was back in the 80's I think but I have lost my clipping. Basically, it is underwear with three leg holes. You can go to that blog to read more (link--same as above).
Boards.ie picked me up today on 'Strange Inventions' posting (link). So far today, October 28, 2010, at posting time (11:11 AM) that post alone has had 57 hits.
My almost ready to recycle underwear at right has
quite a few holes but only two are leg holes.

The Ruby (Red) old cars pictures were taken at our October Early Ford V-8 Club picnic. Cars in order (down): 1957 Chevy Belair 2-door Nomad; 1934 Ford Three-window coupe (we ran one of these as a modified stock car in the 50's); 1965 Mustang; and 1935 or 36 Ford Coupe with rumble seat (closed). Caller: This lady knocked her husband out cold with an eight iron and he crashed the Navigator. He's laying on the grass out cold!

She's layin' out in the street. The dog's been shot too!
Those scoundrels! We have an ambulance coming to 2131 Whippoorwill Road, is that where you are calling from.
Yes, Ma'am, but she's down the street in front of the neighbors house.
Is it far from you?
No Ma'am, just four houses down.
Good, I mean this is terrible but we will find her over there.
How about the doggy, it might be dyin' too! There's blood everywhere down there.

Oh yes, my sisters are there holding her head and both of her hands. Brother has the doggy in his lap.

Oh no Ma'am, he's a nice doggy, he belongs to the neighbor.

Oh yes, Ma'am. I saw it all. A police lady was driving by and just up and shot them both. Lots of times, bang, bang, bang. Mama wasn't doing nothin' bad, she and the dog and the kids were playin' keep the ball and rasslin' some.
You poor dear. Are you sure you are okay? Is anyone there with you?
No Ma'am, I'm alone. I guess I'm alright but it is awful scary.

Just a minute, Ma'am. A sheriff just drove up. I think he will help until the ambulance gets there.

Ours did. There was no way this little girl and long gone mama would be separated for a while. There were tears all around this morning.
Congratulations and applause to all who worked on the release and to the two governments for having civil talks. May peace continue to be furthered in this wild and crazy world.

Monday Update -- 2009-07-27 -- A this and that
Mrs. Palin is officially a civilian now. It happened either yesterday or day in her mind. Depends upon how she ended the day.

Did you hear about the politician who refused to listen to her conscience?

I am retired but my son Mike is my fashion director for the way I dress in the subdivision. He thought my raggedy shorts and holey shirt had to go.
Mrs. Jim is my fashion director for my leisure and in public dressing. She is fairly liberal but does make sure I have not missed any belt loops or forgotten to zip my pants up.

View from our back window -- Look, it's snow! -- Have you had your car read lately? #016
(and just a little car reading for the week)

Snow is all over south and east Houston and areas on to the east and north. Some areas got up to four inches, most around two.
That's what it looked like when first looking out our back window. I heard "See the little white patch of white in the middle behind that house."
Then just a half minute later I heard, "Oh no, it's just the sand trap!" Boo, hiss, our snow didn't stick around last night, it melted as it hit the ground. Houston gets snow about every ten years, this is early as our last was in 2004.

Okay, I was out there anyway. If you super size this you might see a couple of snow flakes on my coat or hat that hadn't melted as the camera snapped. Thank you Gail for taking this excellent picture.

I was dressed like this for my "position" as a traffic control person for the Bentwater (our community) Christmas Home Tour. My job was to help people park and to keep them parking on just one side of the street. The second night we had better weather for all concerned, workers and home viewers, although it was getting cold, down into the upper thirties.

When I took the dogs out this morning things were flying to the south overhead. One group after another, like a Texas meteor shower! The birds were coming south finally.

A little closer shot never hurts anything.
My Pony's [1998 Ford Mustang GT convertible] back in the stable. I had been having air conditioner problems with it.

After all it is eleven years old now (with 77,500 miles on it already!) so every now and then it demands some special attention. Just like Adi and Katrin do.
Our cypress tree in the front yard looks a little bare this morning after all the wind. Wonder where all the needles are?
Look up, not down!

Our cypress is loosing its needles for the winter. Thank goodness for live oak and holly trees that stay green all year.

Things are going to be a lot better by the weekend.
I should even get a chance to try out the Mustang A/C and then put the top down again.
