After our visit in Nebraska we visited my sister and brother-in-law, Lois and Jim W. This day we were headed for Galena, Illinois, when we met the "Road Closed Sign" head on. Since there weren't any detour signs we took off to the left. My sister says always go left if there is any doubt.

BIL (brother-in-law, Jim W.) obliged her out of habit without any words being spoken. He did pretty good, but we did end up on the long way main highway which we were trying to avoid.

On the way there were some pretty sights if you weren't afraid of cows and pot holes. We saw some things and places we had never seen before.

Who all likes PINK HOUSES?

Almost we made it in time for the 10:30 Mass at St. Francis Xavier Basilica in Dyersville, Iowa. (Link) It is one of only 52 basilicas in the United States. (Link)

Next was on to Galena. Probably I will post some inside pictures of the basilica and some of my visual impression of Galena.

Oh yes, this is my sister, Lois, standing by the church sign.

* I used to like this song a lot:

Detour — Patti Page

(from Lyrics-a-plenty.com)

Detour, there's a muddy road ahead, detour
Paid no mind to what it said
Detour, oh these bitter things I find,
Should have read
That detour sign

Headed down life's crooked road, lots of things I never knowed
Because of me not knowin', I now pine
Trouble got in the trail, spent the next 5 years in jail
Should have read (should have read) that detour sign

Detour, there's a muddy road ahead, detour
Paid no mind to what it said
Detour, oh these bitter things I find,
Should have read
That detour sign

When I got right to the place where it said About Face
I thought that all my worries were behind
But the farther I go, more sorrow I know
Should have read (should have read)
That detour sign

Detour, there's a muddy road ahead, detour
Paid no mind to what it said
Detour, oh these bitter things I find,
Should have read
That detour sign

When I got stuck in the mud all my hopes dropped with a thud
I guess that my heart strings are made of twine
Have no willpower to get from the hole that I'm in yet
Should have read (should have read) that detour sign

Detour, there's a muddy road ahead, detour
Paid no mind to what it said
Detour, oh these bitter things I find,
Should have read
That detour sign

Should have read that detour sign
Should have read that detour sign (that detour sign)

I always consider detours a chance for adventure. They aren't any fun if you know where you are!

On the road again (can't get that Willie Nelson song out of my head now .. thank you very much ;) So you had yourselves a little detour adventure .. those can be fun or a pain. From the pictures along the roadside .. you made the best of it.

So the hubby and I have a cruise book and can't decide just yet about Northern Europe. Might have to email you and get the dope (I think that means good scoop) from you. Have a blessed weekend.

Don't know where Sis gets her info, but this old Hippie will confirm: always trust The Left, always fight The Right.

Your detour, my tour; thanks!

hey Jim,

potholes are a way of life here!
Don't Ya Know :)

Detours give unexpected opportunities - like interesting blog posts :)

Oh yes I do love pink houses...on somebody else's house of course. BUT!!! most of all I love Galena! Just last (May) I went for another visit..that time with some girl friends...I never get tired of that fine little city....and it's so very cool downtown and all the Grant stories and flood stories (hence the great doors still at the entrance to downtown...I love that place no matter how many detours I'd have to take!

nice photos of your trip- that pink house would be hard to miss!

I'll have to remember "if there is any doubt, go left" next time I am not sure...

Detours can be fun sometimes...I like cows, but not potholes :)

Have a great weekend!

I always love a good detour- the best adventures come from a wrong turn!

I was in Nebraska recently for work.

Hmmmmm, I'll have to remember to tell dh to always turn left at a detour sign. Think he will listen to that? Probably not.....

I grew up with the WIllie Nelson-Leon Russell version of Detour.

I like detours. I also like pink, but maybe not THAT pink on an entire house.

Thanks for playing 6WS!

Lucky you to visit the St. Francis Xavier Basilica! I would love to visit all the basilicas in the US. I have never heard to always take the left. I will have to remember that! Great 6W!
