Letter "T" -- Friday's Weekend Roundup 12 and Reflections and/or Street/Candid Captures

This Week's Prompts: Starts with "T"; A Favorite; Tom's request, "T"rio; and For James, Reflections and/or Street/Candid Captures.
_ _ _ _

Starts with "T"Trees, they fell right and left during out during our really rough thunderstorms.

"HOUSTON (AP) — Power outages could last weeks in parts of Houston, an official warned Friday, after thunderstorms with hurricane-force winds tore through the city, knocking out electricity to nearly 1 million homes and businesses in the region, blowing out windows on downtown high rises and flipping vehicles.

The National Weather Service said it confirmed a tornado with peak winds of 110 mph (177 kph) touched down near the northwest Houston suburb of Cyprus in Harris County.

Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo, the county’s top elected official, said crews were still trying to determine the extent of the damage and the number of casualties from Thursday’s storms. Houston Mayor John Whitmire said four people, and possibly five, had died.

“It was fierce. It was intense. It was quick, and most Houstonians didn’t have time to place themselves out of harms way,” Whitmire said at a news conference."

A fine "Trio", Me (Jim), Ado. and Mrs. Jim
[A trio of three make for a pair.  Two Pet therapy teams.]

Tom's request, "T"rio: This is a picture of our dog, Adi with Mrs. Jim and I in 2005.  She was a purebred female tri-color beagle.

Adi was our younger daughter's dog.  She had thought her new apartment allowed dogs but then she found that they did not allow beagles.
So Adi had to come to live with us. That is me, Jim, on the right, and Mrs. Jim on the left. All three of us had just passed our therapy dog examinations. Whew!
This is Montgomery Intermediate school, where all three of us would tutor sixth grade reading students. That year Adi and I also visited folks in an assisted living home on Tuesday afternoons.
She was well liked there. We heard a lot of dog tales (worked to be a pun here) from these residents, mainly about dogs that had to stay at their former homes or were in their earlier lives.

A Favorite:  Adi is retiring from Pet Partners
.

.
Dear Jim,

Thank you for notifying us. We will be sure to honor Adi's past contribution to our Pet Partners Therapy Animal Program in our Interactions Magazine, and "Pet Partners, Retired" on our web page.

Warm Regards,
Kelly Schnitzmeier

Subject: Retirement Information Request

To whom it might concern:

My dog and I will not be renewing our certification this year.

Adi, the dog, is now 16 years old and has two major problems which make it hard for her to visit. First, she is VERY hard of hearing. Second, she has severe arthritis in her back legs.

I would like to have her classified as being retired if that is possible for us.

Dog: Adi
Breed: Tri-color Beagle, a female
Age: 16

Co-team member: James Hov... (me)
ID #: 51...

When we first started my wife, (Mrs. Jim) was also certified with Adi. Due to her having many other volunteer responsibilities she was unable to continue with Pet Partners. She was active though, while a member. Mostly she and Adi tutored reading students who needed help.

Wife, former co-team member:  (Mrs. Jim -- ID # 51...)

Additionally, I do thank you for the certificate you sent of in appreciation of our work together, Adi and me. It was for nine years of service. Thank you very much.

Jim

Letter "I" -- Friday's Weekend Roundup 12 and Reflections and/or Street/Candid Captures

This Week's Prompts: Starts with "I." A Favorite.
For Tom, "I"ce".
For James, Reflections and/or Street/Candid Captures.
 _ _ _ _

You can see the frost build up and it was
defrosted a couple of weeks ago.

Starts with "I":  Our small freezer is beginning to be an Icebox, as it fills with frost way too fast.  I think perhaps the door seal has worn.  Icebox starts with the letter "I".  Read here, in Wikipedia, about the early iceboxes, "the non-mechanical refrigeration appliance".  I don't remember ever seeing one, as we lived on a farm and didn't get electricity until 1938.  At the same time the folks purchased a refrigerator.

A Favorite: These are a couple of Ivory Carvings the Mrs. Jim inherited from a retired military officer's wife.  They sit on a bookcase shelf in our living room now.  Ivory cuttings are the death of the elephant many times because the illegal hunters kill for them.    [I may take another picture in the morning with better light.]

.

[click on the picture to better see the Ice piece of sitting on the pipe]
.
For Tom, the word, "Ice":  Ain't she cute! We got down to 22°F that night in 2007 shown here, so we dripped the outside faucets.  [Adi was our Beagle dog, she died in 2012.]

Look closely for the icicles. The piece of
Ice you see sitting on the pipe was from a big icicle about 18 inches long that fell from the faucet and broke. I have a piece of it sitting on the sprinkler pipe. The other icicles are on that weed to Adi's left, your right.

A Lagniappe:

"Blue Bell Light Homemade Vanilla" was our favorite for a long time.  Back when Blue Bell was shut down due to a bacteria run loose in their plants.  Finally, this Light variety, was the last to start production, months behind the regular flavors.  It was also Adi's favorite. (link). But after the COVID Blue Bell stopped making it.  That was when we stopped eating Blue Bell brand altogether.

For James, Reflections and/or Street/Candid CapturesAdi and I found this pretty pool on our walk this back in 2008.There was not a cloud in the sky that morning!

Letter "Z" -- -- Weekend Roundup and Reflections/People on the Street

MERRY CHRISTMAS!!! and
HAPPY NEW YEAR!!

For the 26th letter time, The Week's Prompts are Christmas, A Favorite, and "Red and Green".  The letter not asked for would be "Z".
 _ _ _ _

Christmas:  Our Christmas Tree lighted.  It's a seven-foot store bought artificial.  Also Red and Green

At the foot of the tree is a manger scene, a Fisher Price "toy".  It represents the purpose of tomorrow's holiday, celebrating the human birth of Jesus Christ.  Christians celebrate it on December 25 regardless of the actual birth date.  (Click here for viewing other nativity word posts)

Hence the song that we sang over and over in my country schools, grades one through ten:
Away in a Manger
.
Away in a manger
No crib for a bed
The little Lord Jesus
Laid down His sweet head
(Full words of song at the end below)

Away in a Manger - Kid's Version w/ Lyrics (listen)

A FavoriteMy Holly Tree -- Again, also Red and Green.

My Hard Time Canna Lilly
The rabbits ate all the tender
leaves after we planted it.

Red and Green:  We hope the hibiscus other plants didn't freeze again this winter

 - - - -

A Lagniappe:  The last rose of Autumn but more are on the way.

Another Lagniappe:  my favorite "Z" Words are
1. Zipper
2. Zigzag; and
3. Zoo (not necessarily in that order; plus there may be other favorites that I have not mentioned.)

I am showing you a fence owned by my friend who has a "little ranch" near Telluride in Colorado.

Today I like best "zig-zag" as a zig-zag fence appeals to the hidden rocket scientist nature in me.

They can be freestanding without the use of buried fence posts.  A section can be removed and put back for access/entrance without damage to the fence.  Lastly on my short list is that their rustic looking appearance appeals to me.

- This fence belonged to my friend and neighbor before we moved to Katy.  It was on his Colorado ranch and was there before he acquired the property.
He was a retired major oil company CEO who started in the Chemistry lab of the company when he graduated with his degree, a PhD in Chemistry.

A Reflection or a Street Photo Capture
:   during a little bit of Christmas shopping I had to use this restaurant.  The store had two, both "any gender" per the sign.

It's been a long time since I've rated a relief facility but this on would have been a Zero except that scale goes from one to five. I RATE THIS ONE A ONE.

Another Lagniappe:  Below, is the last full posting on this blog for the year, the following post is from 15 years ago.  I started it in December 2005 but the picture and text below are from January 2006, it was Adi's, our beagle dog's, first of many on this blog.  She was also on some of my other blogs here and there.

Incidentally, this blog has 2,257 posts, 884 draft posts, for a total of 3,140 writings.  It has 18,690 comments with 710,899 hits.  Quite a few families and friends read it and tell me about their viewing but don't leave comments.

Away in a manger
Away in a manger
No crib for a bed
The little Lord Jesus
Laid down His sweet head
The stars in the bright sky
Looked down where He lay
The little Lord Jesus
Asleep on the hay
The cattle are lowing
The Baby awakes
But little Lord Jesus
No crying He makes
I love You, Lord Jesus
Look down from the sky
And stay by my side
Until morning is nigh
Be near me, Lord Jesus
I ask You to stay
Close by me forever
And love me I pray
Bless all the dear children
In Your tender care
And fit us for heaven
To live with You there

Letter "R" -- Weekend Roundup and Street/Reflections

EIGHTEENTH LETTER FOR THIS SERIES - the Letter "R" Prompts are: (A) Starts with the Letter "R"; (B) "Real" or "Reality" (Tom's Choice); (C) A Favorite; (D) Street/Reflections; and (E) A Lagniappe.
   _ _ _ _

[my Photo]

(A) Starts with the Letter "R":   Rooster found in the Garden Section of our "mile-away"   H.E.B. Grocery Store.  You can read more about him Here.

These two pictures are what I call "Railroad Box Car Art" although to some it is just plain (malicious??) graffiti.  I noticed them as the train passed at the crossing where I was waiting to cross.  I was very pleased with my stop.
[you can click on the pictures for a larger view, your Back button will return you here]

As an aside, why don't you be on the lookout
for some Box Car Art and share it here with us.

(B) "Real" or "Reality" (Tom's Choice):   Really is Railroad Box Car Art.  Previously posted at http://jimmiehov.blogspot.com/2018/01/weekend-roundup-01-18-for-letter-a.html

"It can't get much better than this

I was awakened this morning, Saturday, at 7:05. That doesn't sound good, but it was.

Mrs. Jim and Adi had brought me coffee and the paper and now both were sitting beside me on the bed.

Now she had gone to a luncheon, The Jingle Bell Brunch, with her fellow golfers. I get used to her going as she a very busy person, she:
golfs a couple of times a week-Tuesdays and Fridays-with the ladies and sometimes a third with me;
takes care of her 88 year old Mother who lives by herself in her apartment at Conroe, Texas-generally helping on Wednesday, Saturday, and Sunday;
is secretary for her garden club-sends out meeting notices, arranges for speakers, etc.;
now is also "Gourmet Dining" chairperson for the Bentwater Ladies Organization;
plays the viola in our church orchestra every other Sunday-which means practice Wednesdays. Also she is the orchestra music librarian and copies music for the players, which takes four or six hours each week;
plays bridge every other Monday;
attends Bible study Monday evenings-it has homework-they do Beth Moore studies; and
in the past here has been president of the nine hole golf ladies organization, group leader, benevolence leader in our Sunday school class, been on the personnel committee at church, and on and on.

Those are the things she does without me. Meeting people and helping are two of her favorite things to do. She is a social worker (LSU MSW), retired now. We do a lot of things together, our favorite is probably traveling. I would have loved to have gone to London again this time but it was a 'girl thing' for Mrs. Jim and our daughter.

Mrs. Jim just got back from the brunch. She has another $60 winnings from golf to add to the $73.25 she has already. She has to spend the 73 by December 31, all at the pro shop.

Got to go now. Have made a tee time, 11:00, for next Friday. There are more calls to make too, one very important for our Spring travel to Sicily and more. I'm hoping for coffee in bed tomorrow again. Jim (Previously posted by me on December 10, 2005.  http://jimmiehov.blogspot.com/2005/12/it-cant-get-much-better-than-this-i.html

(C) A FavoriteReady for work.  Adi and Mrs. Jim were a Registered Pet Therapy Team and so were Adi and I.  Our first assignments were a girl and a boy, to tutor them in Reading Skills so that they could pass into the Seventh Grade.   The boy I had would sprawl on the floor, stomach down, as would Adi.  The boy held his book in one hand and the other arm was around Adi.  Both of them passed their tests.  And Adi became a Reading Dog.

(D) Street/Reflections:   On the Hood Reflection.  Don't you just love the spring flowers?

 [my Photo]

(E) A Lagniappe.  Some of the other Roosting Chickens.

Letter "D" -- Weekend Roundup and Reflections

The fourth issue this week of my 2021 WEEKEND ROUNDUP postings and ... (THE FOURTH LETTER FOR THIS SERIES) - the Letter "Delightful" Prompts are: (A) Starts with the Letter "D"; (B) "D" (Tom's Choice); (C) A Favorite; (D) Reflections; and (E) A Lagniappe.
 _ _ _

(A)
Starts with the Letter "D":  Dog starts with "D", "this is Henri, he lives with a blogging friend.  Henri is 8 weeks old and is 7 pounds of fluff and love. He is a Bernedoodle.

(B) "Delightful"  (Tom's Choice):  Zebras at Water.  They are Delightful and once I had wanted to use them for "Z" to go with the others on my June 26, 2020, go-around but NOW is their chance to sneak in.  The were on my "free" calendar for November.

(C) A FavoriteDaughters (2) and granddaughters (4), great granddaugters (3), and great-great grandaughter (1).  The four above are Mrs. Jim, youngest granddaughter, younger daughter, and older daughter.

(D) Reflections:   Muddy waters after a washing rain make for interesting Reflections.

Wind ruffled water here makes a poor Reflection.

(E) A Lagniappe:  A new future in a sweet older couple's  lives.
 _ _ _ _

Bonus Questions:

(1)   Tell a bit about your experience or feelings about

having a puppy.   Adi, our Beagle Dog, belonged, and probably still does, to our younger daughter.  It was purchased as a pup, a purebred, but cheaper without papers.

Two problems came up real quick, first, they lived in a third floor apartment and that meant carrying a puppy up and down two flights of stairs for potty training and any outings.  Also Adi didn't like being left alone and began to eat the walls iin the utility room where her bed was.

So Adi soon came to live with us.  Adi died in 2012.

Click here, Link to Adi's Meme

(2) What is your favorite Word starting with  "D"?   Mine today will be "Daughter" , I have two, younger one working at home for COVID-19 period, and the other picking up the pieces after her husband died two weeks ago, of a combination COVID-19 and heart problems.  Both are precious in our family.

(3) Anything else you were reminded of here that you  would like to tell about?
