~~ Friday’s Hunt v.3.07 -- "G" is for ...
Friday Hunt for the week of February 17th: (1) Starts with G; (2) Week's Favorite; and (3) Pink
(1) Starts with G:
"G" is for Grandchildren. Last week's trip to Washington D.C. was a grandchild visit, we went to visit BP. KP, our youngest Grandchild and her parents also came along, Karen (our daughter) and Bill (SIL).
Pictured at right are BP and KP at the skating rink on Saturday afternoon. In these pictures are also BP's three roommates. They live in a Georgetown U. apartment. Note also that KP is skating with a Penguin, which is an aid for helping beginning skaters to remain upright while skating.
Graham Crackers -- What do you see in the right hand picture? I see two boxes of Graham Crackers, same brand, one smaller than the other one. What does this mean?
Kroger has downsized the size of the crackers to fit, resulting in a "savings" from 16 oz in the boxes to 14.4 oz making the smaller box workable. So have other brands (link). Martha Stewart has a recipe for making your own. I'll let you know if I make some (link)
Green RV, I don't know the make but it is not a Jeep, parked at our Kroger Grocery store along with the other cars.
Grocery Cart: Full of savings, this Grocery Cart is. We saved $101.00 and had a payment for the reminder, $67.97.
I wish we could do this every day, but that is the way things work. Our local Randall store was going out of business and everything in the store was 50, 60, or 70 percent off.
Ginger Plant: These bromeliads (???) were sitting in the window of the United Airline Lounge at the Reagan Airport in Washington D.C. Note the Capital building behind the departing plane. We took the picture through the window, from above the plants.
At first I thought they were ginger plants but now I have decided that these are probably bromeliads. If you read some of the following, it's hard to tell.

We had a row of ginger plants on the property line at our former Montgomery hom (link). For a long time we didn't know what they were, just a plant given at Mrs. Jim's Mom's funeral and afterwards we turned it into an outdoor plant. These truly were ginger plants and had bulb type roots similar to the ginger roots found in the produce section of the grocery stores.
(2) Week's Favorite: Galentine Day (also a "G" word) at our LaMadeleine restarant. The Gals could get a buy one, get one meal. We, Mrs. Jim, the Gal, and I had the sampler plate.
And we drank lots of coffee

(3) Pink: a Pink Guitar (makes this post ALL "G" words). This is a KP's Christmas present from Mimi and Papa.
It includes guitar lessons for some time. Some time is rather uncertain, but that all depends on the progress KP is making.

Six Word Saturday — A Random Five post [004], This and That —

my Six Words:
Now start the 'this and that' which I ran Friday:
1. Spring has matured here.
I don't know what kind of flowers these are. Mrs. Jim planted them in our side yard several years back from a pot that we had been given. It might have been from a funeral, my dad's, her mom's, or a relative.
??? Neither of us can remember what they are or where they came from.
Our weather lady confirms a mature spring here. Tuesday's golf next week will be a high of 91 with a low of 73 in the morning. That means very pleasant again.
Update. My friend Dot, who reads my blog from my FaceBook post, told me that these are Ginger plants, the herb. I did some checking and yes, she is right, they are ginger plants. (link 1)(link 2)
2. The men from Mrs. Jim's Sundays school class played golf at Cape Royale on Tuesday this week. They always ask me to play.
This is a pretty course but not really fully developed. It borders on Lake Livingston on the north and is close to the town of Coldspring, Texas, on the South. The lawyer advertising on the # 10 tee box is from Pointblank, Texas.
You can barely see the lake in the distance in the picture below. And the little pond. It approaches the 9th green, and yes, I lost a ball in it. The ducks thought we might feed them.

The drive home was nice, but a little warm for 'top-down' driving. I did turn around and go back to catch a picture of these miniature horses grazing in a pretty tree spotted pasture.
Then I got this picture of some Main Street businesses in Willis, Texas. I like to shop at this old-timey hardware store. They even have a deli and sell meat.
Since I had only eaten two no-fat saltine cracker peanut butter sandwiches for lunch, I made a nice brat dog to satisfy my hunger pangs. Lunch at the pro-shop snack bar was a special for the day, chicken salad sandwich. Probably that was healthier. The other $8.00 special was a cheeseburger, chips (crisps for the Brits), and a soda fountain drink.

3. Yesterday [Thursday, May 23] was National Turtle Day. On this World Turtle Day, Jaymi looked at 11 Critically endangered turtle species.
This turtle was found by Adi on one of our walks through the subdivision. Since the turtle was close to the little pond I didn't take it back. I do that a lot when they stray away from the ponds, especially if they get onto the road.
Adi was a very good dog (link)

4. On Wednesday last week Mrs. Jim had the book club meeting at our home. This was her hors d'oeuvre table, set in our breakfast room. The table was giving to my parents by Grandpa when they returned from their honeymoon.
So that was a good day for me to get a haircut. On my long way home I detoured over through Montgomery and visited a couple of antique stores.
This nice 1957 Triumph TR2 (could have been TR3, I can't remember) was parked in front of the real estate office. The owner was moving here from Oregon. He told me that is the only know TR2 remaining from a few made especially for road course track automobile racing.
The white building is one of our Montgomery County Museums. The building across the street from the car is one of the antique stores I visited. I did find a metal toy Triumph TR3 racing car for sale in a box of other stuff.
5. Finally, for the last, we visited out of town for the weekend.
When we go to Louisiana I like to eat Louisiana seafood. Granny's in Bastrop, Louisiana, was having their Saturday night all-you-can-eat seafood buffet.
My first helping here was a small bowl of seafood gumbo, a dish of fried oysters (some were missing as I had passed it around when we sat down), fried catfish, boiled shrimp, a stuffed crab, some breaded fried shrimp, a fried frog leg, and some white seafood pasta with white sauce.
We stayed with Mrs. Jim's sister, Velma and hubby. They have lived almost forever in Farmerville, La, north of Rustin. This is their house shown flying the Christian flag that was given to the members of their church.

Mothers Day reminders ~~ Friday’s Hunt v1.20 -- "T" is for ...
The Friday Hunt, week of May 13th:
(1) Starts with "T"; (2) Week's Favorite; and (3) Evening
(1) Starts with "T": Tasty. Today it's tasty homemade meat loaf.
After reading this article in the H O U S T O N ... C H R O N I C L E .food section we talked a little about Meat Loaf and its making. Mrs. Jim said it is hard to make a consistent meat loaf, time after time. She would like a good recipe, one that she likes. So we will try this one.
Do you remember eating at those old cafeterias owned and operated by a local entrepreneur? Not the ones most common now, chains and/or franchise enterprises. Cleburne recently closed their doors after opening in 1975. They will be missed, even so they have shared three of their favorite recipes with the public. Our paper ran them in the May 4th edition, food section.
The Ginger Plants are in bloom at our former residence.
For summer this pink blossom, a little yellow flower I missed getting for this picture, and these tender leaves will be gone.
They will be replaced by new growth with solid green leaves, some being over six feet tall/long.
The house there has not yet sold.

I mentioned that my mom made the best meat loaf that I have ever tasted. Mrs. Jim agreed that it was super delicious. We don't have her recipe though. This was so close to Mothers Day that I was reminded of a lot of things about Mom. She died in 1999 at age 88.
(2) Week's Favorites:
For summer this pink blossom, a little yellow flower I missed getting for this picture, and these tender leaves will be gone.

This is our Mothers Day Photo, taken an the church foyer, before the service. We went to a nice little Chinese restaurant after church. Both of took home a doggy bag and we made another meal from these leftovers. Mrs. Jim had Chicken Moo Guy Pan I had Vegetable and Chicken Chow Mein.
Both the Church and the restaurant are within walking distance of our home, about 1.2 miles.
(3) Evening:
Sunday Evening Church Service ~ ~ ~ ~ Sunday Morning
We are members of Second Baptist Church of Houston. There are six Campuses, ours, the 1463 Campus (we are located on Hwy 1463, Fullshear, Texas, with a mailing address of Katy, Texas) is our church.
Sunday evening services have an average attendance of around 100 and we begin the service with The Lord's Supper (communion) before the focal song and the sermon. In the evening we have a singing group and a small instrument section.
Morning service has over a thousand in attendance with a choir and an orchestra. We have Communion quarterly. Attendance was over 5000 total in the three services for Easter. We do baptize every Sunday after the service. Mrs. Jim and I help with that.
This Sunday we will observe this campus' first anniversary. We will have hot dogs and cupcakes furnished. There will also be food trucks where full meals will be available. The theme is PATRIOTIC as we are in the middle of Primary Election Runoff. Our church DOES NOT endorse candidates.

The View From
Our Breakfast Room Window Yesterday Afternoon:

After the salad we had a tongue cleansing sorbet prepared by Diana.

The entree [main course] was prepared by Mrs. Jim.

Here Mrs. Jim and 'the other Jim' were dishing out the main course on the breakfast room table.
The apple crepe dessert by Diane was delicious, there were no leftovers. Unfortunately I did not take a picture of these.
Come to think about it, there weren't any doggie bags either. We ate it all. The cost? $52.48 per couple, including some wine.

There are nine groups of four doing this three times a year. All live in our Bentwater subdivision. Each group uses the same menu and the groups are rearranged every time.
At the end of the year there is another meeting in one member's home, a Christmas party. All the participants attend and each brings a dessert or hors d'oeuvres dish. Before we leave the ladies have a short meeting to elect new officers.
For these last two years, Mrs. Jim and two other ladies from the Bentwater Ladies Organization are the directors for Gourmet Dining. Each is on a menu committee along with three other ladies. Mrs. Jim was on the committee that came up with the menu for Friday night.

Or will it? ~~ First of all, these pictures were taken at a gourmet dinner that was held at our home last. Mrs. Jim cooked the entrée while three other ladies prepared the rest of the meal.
Pictured below from left to right is what we had: carrot soup with ginger; a romaine lettuce salad (no picture); pork chops with butternut squash and apple stuffing with a mild dirty rice (Mrs. Jim's presentation); and berry, apple, and pistachio combo pie garnished with pistachio nuts and whip cream.
Next time I go to the hardware store I will buy some 'blue traps' for that creature and his friends. After I catch him and any of his friends living there I will tell her about the open door that I have been worrying about.

Now, what did Mrs. Jim not know? ~~ Mrs. Jim found a mouse in the garage running to hide someplace. What she didn't know is that the connecting door to the garage was open for several hours that afternoon while we were gone.Next time I go to the hardware store I will buy some 'blue traps' for that creature and his friends. After I catch him and any of his friends living there I will tell her about the open door that I have been worrying about.

Plants and flowers
This White Flower today is a Plumeria that was given to Mrs. Jim a couple of years ago. At first it was just a stick, a cutting about ten inches long that was given to Mrs. Jim.
These flowers come from bulbs every spring. They are Ginger plants, and the roots would be edible or good for seasoning. We have never eaten them. They are very easy to grow, plant and water. I wish we had brought a few bulbs to plant when we moved to Katy.
