Letter "W" -- -- Weekend Roundup and Reflections/People on the Street

MERRY CHRISTMAS !!!

- - -

Weekend Roundup, THE TWENTY-THIRD LETTER FOR THIS SERIES - The Letter "W" Prompts are: (A) Starts with the Letter "W"; (B) "Weather" (Tom's Choice); (C) A Favorite; and (D) A Lagniappe.

 - - - -

(A) Starts with the Letter "W":  Wreath starts with the letter "W", we have used this Christmas Wreath on our front door for many years.  It was a Christmas gift from one of Mrs. Jim's bridge playing friends.   One bell was cracked but a little glue fixed it well.

(B.1) "Weather" (Tom's Choice): "Cloudy with scattered contrails."

There were many contrails emerging from the clouds and visible when into the open space.  That was on our way on the Westpark Toll Road to our Cardiologist's office yesterday.  But I didn't have a chance to stop there (Mrs. Jim doesn't like for me to take pictures while driving) and the contrails we could see had mostly diffused by the time we could stop.

I had hoped to see an "above ground rail car" going by on the tracks to the left but wasn't lucky this day.

[Early this morning]

[Forecast for today]

(B.3)  Reflections/Street People:  This is an isolation choice from the picture above.

The clouds' Reflections are vividly shown in the mirrored windows of the building ahead of us that we saw at the traffic light.

(C) A Favorite:  Oscar Meyer Wienermobile
I had hoped to find my previous post written about my venture "driving the Wienermobile."   Well, I was only driving in my mind but I got the feel of the cockpit and the wheel when it was my turn to go in and sit at the controls.  I had pictures of that but . . .

(D.1)
A Lagniappe:  Also
Starts with the Letter "W":  Witch starts with "W".  This is a Witch's Car; the owner proclaims this in a couple of stickers on her rear window.

She has other stickers in various places on the car.  You can read them by clicking on the picture at right.  Click the picture again for larger still.

(D.2) Another Lagniappe:   Wales is the only country I've visited that begins with "W".

~~ Friday’s Hunt v.3.10-- "J" is for ...

Friday's Hunt for the week of March 10th:
(1) Starts with "J"; (2) Week's Favorite; and (3) Bird or wings

(1) Starts with "J":  "J" is for "Jeeps I have known." Note the dog waiting in this one parked outside the grocery store.  I think he was hiding from me.

A local Jeep, parked in the grocery store lot in Conroe, Texas.  I wouldn't leave my dog unattended there in the back.  If you tried to take her she probably would have gone (she died in 2-13).  This one looks a little afraid but would probably go also.
I'm thinking the owner is fairly young, this looks like a young person's Jeep.

Parked outside a small bungalow in Key West, Florida.  We walked past this Jeep every morning but never saw anyone near it.  I'm thinking it belongs to a person who likes to take his Sunday car out in the Boone Docks Could be a lady, I'd guess in her early thirties.

This is our granddaughter KP driving her rental Jeep find in Hyde Park, London, U.K.  She seemed to be going in circles.  Taken while we were visiting them as they lived in London.  They are home now.

Another Jeep find in a grocery store parking lot.  This time here in Katy, Texas.  Tom thinks it may be a "Wanta be Jeep."  I didn't hang around waiting for the owner but I can imagine he also is in his early thirties and likes to drive in the muddy rice fields.  He may go rock climbing with it.

I don't know much about this Jeep or its owner.  But I was glad to find that I had blogged about it being a Red Jeep.  My son had a red one but sold it when he retired.  My younger Great-grandniece is getting married tomorrow.  When she was in high school she was wanting to get a Red Jeep but her father got her a Chevy Tahoe instead.

This white and pink Jeep was driven by a young lady her in town on Cinco Ranch Boulevard.  I couldn't quite ever get even with her (I was driving beside and behind her) so that I could get a really good picture.  Notice the pink decorations on the back.  There were more and larger pink items around the hood area and on the grill.

This nice looking, seemingly sedate, Jeep belonged to my friend.  I am not sure that he owns it any more.  It is the main piece of hardware when he and his son would go Jeeping.  He bought the RV so that he wouldn't have to stay overnight in town while on a Jeeping Weekend but rather could camp out with his son in the rock fields where they Jeeped.

This0Yellow0Jeep I don't know much about.  It was in 2006 when I found it and took a picture.  I have no idea where I was then.  Maybe Quebec City, CA?  I did talk about liking it better than my son's Red Jeep (blog link).

All of the above Jeeps have been on my blogs.  Each one had its own story, often behind that story is another story I haven't told.  Someday, I might ...

(2) Week's Favorite: When we got back from our South American cruise (L.A. around Cape Horn and up to Rio de Janeiro) my Mustang, a 1998 GT Convertible, had cratered.  The battery was completely dead and would not start.

This week I jumpered it off my other Mustang, a 1974 Mustang II Ghia, to get it going.  Then without shutting it off I drove to Sam's and bought it a new battery, one with a three year warranty.  Below is the waiting room where I got caught up with comments owed, some from you guys reading this.  I hope I didn't miss anyone.

(3) Bird or wings: One burglar was shot dead.  The other escaped for today but he will be caught and become a jail bird. Two policemen were shot, one seriously, the other went home after spending a night in the hospital.

— A Random Five post [007], This and That —

.
Today is Flag Day (in the U.S.) Please remember to fly yours.

On the left is KP with the American Flag she made in her British school. The picture was taken while she was still two. She is three now and will be four next month.

On the right is our house where we are flying our flag.

Click on the picture and you'll see our two Lily on the Nile flowers that are in bloom.

One:  Read your car feature

This person thinks a lot of his car.  What kind of a car do you think it is?  Answer will be here on down a bit.

I say "his" because how many ladies still use The Club for theft protection?  Did you ever use The Club?  I have one and still use it on my 1998 Mustang GT Convertible.  Like this man, I say no one ever has stolen it while The Club was on it.

This man goes to church every Sunday morning and is always n attendance on Wednesday nights for supper and the pastor's study period.  His car?  It is a 1986 Chevy Cavalier.  A picture of it is at the bottom of this post.

Two:  Ugly Foot Contest winner (link) revisited

Pretty feet?  These feet are still not very pretty.  But they are mine.

Up close, see right, you will see why they aren't so very pretty.  My right foot has semi-webbed toes. Click picture.

Three:  My favorite pick-me-up snack

This would be my yummy light or no-fat soda crackers with peanut butter concoctions.  I'll have one or two of these with coffee at mid morning.

When I play golf, I take five.  One or two with coffee while driving to the course.  Then one or two at about eleven for my quick energy boost, and I'll have what is left while driving home.

Oh yes, the cups are two of the set of eight that I rescued from a big box of assorted items.  Mom had a lot of these and Dad was putting them in the auction when he sold the house.

Mom had died about five years earlier and Dad was moving into an assisted living after he stopped driving.  Two of the cups have been broken so now I only have six.

Four:  I do my own wash--today I'm showing my outer clothes, next week it may be my sock and underwear drawer.

I washed all my clothes in one load this week.  Sometime I do two loads if I have a lot of clothes or have missed a week.

On the right are my dress short sleeved shirts, a long sleeved blue dress shirt, my every day shirts and a pair of blue Docker pants.  The every day shirts were the ones I wore at my teaching job before we went 'casual' for dress.

In the left picture hanging are my golf shirts.  Please note that they all have pockets.  I have a lot without pockets which I don't wear very often.  These are my faves.  Mrs. Jim had a white blouse drying in the back but it didn't bother me.

Five:  It ain't free if it costs

My Coke Rewards people e-mailed me telling me of a "Free MacDonald's Quarter Pounder" (hamburger).  I enjoy the free things that My Coke Rewards has given me.

So I clicked on the link and this is what I got.  My "Free MacDonald's Quarter Pounder" would cost me fifty points.

Oh yes, here is my friend's 1986 Chevy Cavalier.  Isn't it pretty.  He told me the mileage, it might still be in the 30,000's.  It was very low, I remember.  This man is in his high eighties.

Night Scene in Jim's Backyard

My new camera is running on full automatic.  I think to take moon pictures (I covet all those) there must be special settings made.

Anyway, the moon wasn't peeking out the other night so I got this for you.  Picasa helped me with the effect.

1.  How does one become aware when he or she is getting old?  For me it was gradual.  I was back in college and the banks had special life-time no-fee account for college kids.  They must be under 30.

Why not 35?  That bothered me but one day they did change to 35.  But by then I was over 35 (still in college, when I went back I spent eleven years going to night school for three degrees).  Getting old.

If you went to college back when I did there were long lines of us out amongst the trees waiting for our turn to pull class cards.  Our lines were arranged by alphabetical order.

This particular time when I was given my class cards one of the young ladies whom I considered my contemporary and would like sit somewhere near in class surprised me.  She addressed me as "Sir."  Getting old.

Those eleven years and three degrees were a signal that I should stop taking classes.  I did vow to take a Shakespeare Literature class but haven't done that yet. I soon began to teach a Business Law evening class at the community college where I got the first of those three degrees.  In about three years I was offered a professor job there, teaching a full load.

One of my classroom innovations was to move around to the front of the teacher desk and sit up on it so students on their way out could stop and talk, make an office appointment, perhaps give me a thumbs up, or whatever.

I don't know if it was a conspiracy or not, but it all happened at one time, like when I was still in school they called me "Sir."  The students began patting my leg.  Getting old.

Now, I get patted a lot. The patting is mostly done by women but a few men pat me.  Shoulders or when sitting my legs are their favorites.

Last week I went to see my dermatologist about some sores and rashes that I could not get rid of.  One of of those involved a drop-your-drawers-so-I-can-see episode.  I thought his nurse might leave but she stayed busy over by the lavatory.

After my doctor was finished and gave me a new prescription (and my pants were back up) I saw the nurse  throwing away my older prescription tube of medicine.

I said to her, "You are throwing my medicine away."  She smartly said, "It says 1999 on the tube."  End of that.  But on the way out, she gave me the nicest pat I have had for a long time.  Getting old.

2.  Got gas for Mrs. Jim last week and this car was ahead of me.  I decided this would make a nice "Read your car" feature.

Back a couple of years a had a weekend feature called "Read Your Car." It didn't go over real big so I stopped doing it. (link)

I could see that the driver was a lady.  A lady who was lazy and wasn't too into getting it done very fast as she was sitting inside her car.  She should have been washing her bug smeared windows or watching for the filling to finish.  I felt like honking at her to get her attention and then ask if it was still filling or wasn't maybe she was finished.  She must have had it on slow.

I don't fault her for not buy American.  That has gone out of style now for a long time and Honda does make a good car.  Most now are made in American but the profits go to Japan.  I still buy American.

Did you notice the fish symbol on the back of her car?  But the words inside say "Darwin."  I had not seen one of these before (see picture below).  Her blatant fish says she is one of the of many vocal evolutionists.  Personally if I had a fish it would be telling the world the standard fish message of Biblical origin which includes the world being created by God in seven days.  To me that is a Big Bang if I ever could dream of one and I believe it (creation theories search).

Note also the license plate frame, saying "Harley Davidson."  The lady might be a biker but I am thinking her husband or male friend put that on for her.

Can you read the price of gas?  It was $3.02 here that day.  The locals are having a little gas war because a new grocery store (H.E.B) has moved in.

This gas was from Kroger and was $3.22 before my 20¢ off.  Still though, 16 gallons cost a lot.  In our car $48 will get us about 320 miles.

3.  You know you are getting old when your friends are having their 50th wedding anniversaries.  Our friend decided she could not get into her wedding dress anymore.  Can you?

Guy stuff, I don't even have my wedding suit.  I grew and it shrank.

4.  I played golf with my friend  on Wednesday.  We played at Panorama Village and the course was nice (link).  My ball was in front of this tree and a little squirrel was watching me from in back of the tree.

The squirrel's brother later tried to steal my peanut butter and cracker sandwiches.  He didn't get away with that but he did contaminate my food.

5. I read a lot of stuff on my computer besides blogs, Facebooks, e-mail, etc. My computer starts up every morning with MSN News. Then the news items change as the day goes along.

This item came along on Wednesday. I am a big fan of Van Gogh (my blogs) and really like this video.  It was neat:

Six Word Saturday — A Random Five post [005], This and That —

.
This Friday's post will start with a golf picture. This is Mrs. Jim teeing off at our # 14 hole yesterday about noon.

She had been playing with two other ladies at the start.  But when a few rain sprinkles came they decided to quit.

Mrs. Jim called me at 10:45 to see if I wanted to join her out behind out house.  So I played #'s 11 through 18 with her.

You can make the picture larger by clicking on it.
............... [click again for extra large]
.
.

1.  Were you surprised to hear of this ship catching on fire?  We were.

We will be cruising soon again with some family.  Karen asked if we wanted to change our mind.  I doubt she would want to change hers really.

I told her not to worry because the unwritten maritime rule is that women and children first and then followed by old people (pensioners like me).

She didn't comment on that (we text the 5000 and some miles).

The picture does make it look pretty bad.
.

2.  Good watermelon, bad watermelon?  Which is which?

Hint, I took the one on the left back for a refund.  It was awful.  It looked weird too.  Grown in Mexico didn't help.
.

3.  Bad Jim.  Mrs. Jim's camera  (a Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W330) did not come with the proper cable to make uploads of her pictures.

So we would take the SD card out and place it in the SD card reader of her computer.  Her computer is a Toshiba Portégé® 705 and in most respects is a perfect computer for a not too techie lady.

The SD port on her computer was always tricky and hard to get the card inserted.  Last Friday it was particularly bad in acting up.  So I gave it an extra push and literally pushed the back part of the reader away, breaking it off.  We found it laying on top of her CD player.  I am guessing that a lot of these break.

Mrs. Jim needed two pictures on that card because she was going to use the them in a magazine article she was working on.  I suggested we take the computer in for "warranty" as surely it was defective in operating so hard and then breaking with normal use.

Mrs. Jim said no, don't do that as she would try to work it out with her "tools."  That turned out bad too and the card went down inside deep, even blocking the CD from coming out.  I was afraid something might short out inside so WE decided to leave it powered down and take it in.

Best Buy where we have out warranty said they would send it off.  Either it would be defective or they would repair it for a charge.  At any rate that would be THREE WEEKS.  The Tech at Office Depot could take the back off and try to retrieve it.  He warned that taking the back off might void the warranty .  Or send it off for TWO WEEKS.

One other problem was that this was Sunday now, after church.  Mrs. Jim said why didn't we call our friend at his home who has a computer tech business.  We called him and he said to bring it over.  At home he said he could 'loosen' the back and try to work it back out.  Well, he did that and now all is up to snuff.

I would recommend this Dynex USB SD card reader instead of using the cable anyway.  It is simple, plug the reader in, plug the card in, and copy/drag the picture to the desired computer file.  I am using it for my own now also.

One problem, if your card isn't an SD or a Mini SD card then it won't work.  You need a Universal Camera USB card reader for that.  I think my Sony card, Pro Dual, will work with its adaptor.  I will try it later.  Now I am using the SDHC cards and this reader works great with them also.

4.  Did you watch
C a r o l e . K i n g last Tuesday evening?  She was honored at the White house.  It was a nice 'oldie' song fest.

Her most played favorite was "You've got a friend." and she still could sing it very nicely Tuesday.

She was honored by being the first female song writer to be given the Gershwin Prize for Popular Song at the Library of Congress. (link)
.

5. Read Your Car
Back a couple of years a had a weekend feature called "Read Your Car."  It didn't go over real big so I stopped doing it. (link)

This car?  Obviously a handicapped person in the family.  There are no dents or large gashes so I would say that this is a conservative driver.  Probably conservative in politics also.

The sticker in the rear window says that a "take charge person" does the driving.  And the color being a beigey brown says that this person is quiet and doesn't care for attention.  See the sticker below.  Remember to click on it if you have trouble reading it.
