A Favorite: Lady Bird Johnson was my Favorite First Lady. 284 acres of The Johnson Texas farm was made into an open to the public, Lady Bird Johnson Wildlife Center. It is now a state botanic garden and arboretum with over 10,000 different species of wildflowers from all over Texas. It was featured on the March 2024 issue of the Southern Living Magazine, page 88 and ff.
More than 240,000 visitors have been coming every year. Mrs. Jim and I took my parents from Nebraska there in the 1980's, They, retired former farmers, were thoroughly impressed. I think my dad, generally a Republican voted for him, same as our family here in Texas.
A Lagniappe: Two Love Birds
A Sad Update!! A squirrel has eaten these birds' eggs, robbed from their nest; so they have no reason to stay here. They are headed further north in their migratory journey up from Central America.

Letter "K" -- Weekend Roundup
THE ELEVENTH LETTER FOR THIS SERIES) - the Letter "K" Prompts are: (A) Starts with the Letter "Kooky"; (B) "Kooky" (Tom's Choice); (C) A Favorite; (D.1 & D.2) A Reflection/Street Scene and Lagniappe.

First picture is the 'food to go' kitchen. Next is the inside of the men's room. Last on the right is the outside of this building. Mrs. Jim said the women's room had stalls with curtains for doors.
Here, at Luckenbach, Texas (google link), the action is starting. We were there from about 6:00 PM to around 7:15 and this fellow was playing and singing on the stage the whole time.
Mrs. Jim was waiting for me to come back from the men's room. The last picture says the singer is taking a break and that 'all that's left is us chickens.' Happy picnicking with your food on those tables. Shoo the chickens off first.

Answer, if you believe the Bible is true, the chicken. Genesis says that God created the fowls, it doesn't say that he made eggs. He made chickens so that the chicken could make her eggs.

(C) A Favorite: Keeping with Texas Spring Tradition, this Redbud Tree that we found on our Wednesday's walk decided to bloom. Note the brown grass due to our recent cold, very cold. But the Redbud Tree stood ready to bloom.

(D.2) Street Photo and another Lagniappe: Where I broke my Kneecap, at Powerscourt Garden, Ireland. I fell on these steps going down the hill into the garden, the Young Lady sitting there and another fellow helped me get up. They overcame my objections, I didn't want to get up, rather just lay there and misserate. (Read More)

Bonus Questions:
(1) Tell about your accident or other some other unusual experience away from home that you'd like to share. Besides breaking my kneecap, I would tell about backing our rental SUV in Italy into a bruiser monster truck double parked behind me. Several witnesses told me to hurry and leave before the owner came back. Fearing an altercation by judging the frenzied motioning we did leave, quickly. The rental people passed this damage on as I had noted previous damage there at the time we picked it up.
(2) What is your favorite Word starting with "K"? Mine today will be "King", because at my age people have started treating me like a "King".

The Letter "E" -- Weekend Roundup and Reflections

The 67-foot-tall statue of our First TeXas President. (link).
The statue is a few miles south of Huntsville, Texas, on the side of Interstate Highway 45.
It is visible from a couple of miles to the south and also welcomes motorists coming over the hill from the north.
(A) Starts with "E": Extra starts with the letter "E". Size Extra Large for this statue of our first Texas President, Sam Houston, before joining the Union.

If you like art then go to Europe. We found this Cézanne original in the Lautrec Museum in Albi, France. It is by Paul Cézanne (1839 to 1906) and he was pretty quirky. (Cézanne Wikipedia link)

(B) (An) Evergreen (Tom's Choice) : The Cyprus, behind the house, left side, are Evergreens. They are all over Southern Europe.
(C) A Favorite: Every time we go someplace and stay a bit we run into Texas People. The top picture of these two show a little booth in the old section of Dubai selling rugs and other woven things plus ++.
But surprise, who was running it but a local Houston Suburban Texas lady and her Syrian husband owners. The only thing we had in common was in knowing the name of our small Texas towns, both Houston Suburbs.

(D) Reflections: Amongst other things there is a diagonal Reflection of a Road in the Windows running up diagonally from the lower right of the Children's Hospital in the Houston (Texas) Medical Center. _ _ _ _

Bonus Question: What is the name of this plant variety? It is a pretty one that Mrs. Jim's niece gave to her from the funeral of the Mom, Mrs. Jim's sister. She had died from COVID-19 and complications from a stroke earlier by a few months.

The Letter "X" ~~ Weekend Roundup and Reflections
The twenty-fourth issue of Weekend Roundup for this year, 2020...
(THE TWENT-FOURTH LETTER FOR THIS SERIES)

(A) Contains the Letter "X": "TeXas" contains the letter "X". These pretty blue flowers are our Texas State Flower, the TeXas Bluebonnet. In Spring, March and April and the first half of May, they grow along sides of our roads and highways and some farmers have entire fields of them. I found the little plants above planted under a tree in our neighborhood during one of our many stay-at-home walks. It was on March 26, 2020. The bottom picture was one I took in 2013. Some fields are more full of flowers than this.
(B) Open choice: From my Saturday, December 10, 2005 post, it was my first picture to post. Of course Mrs. Jim is ALWAYS FIRST and is ALWAYS RIGHT. "It can't get much better than this

(D) Reflections: This giant rubber duckie, kind of BIG also, made me laugh a little, Mrs. Jim is smiling. Sitting in Sydney Harbor, it is a piece of art commissioned for the Sydney Festival. It was created by Dutch artist Florentijn Hofman [Zap2it Blog for more]. We enjoyed the Festival activities all over town. Saturday night we went to a concert in the park. The duck didn't Quack while we were there.

My Two Questions (you can answer just one if you wish):
(1) What comes to mind when you think of "TeXas"? I have spent 61 years here. I came to Texas in 1956 and was stationed in El Paso for a five year stint in the U.S. Army at Fort Bliss. Forty-three weeks was at an electronics class for my next my Army second enlistment job and then using it in a 17-year civilian career until I quit for a teaching job at San Jacinto College.
Upon discharge I left for a civilian work assignment as an Aerospace Engineer at the New Boston New Hampshire USAF Satellite Tracking Station. (there our company had all the equipment installed and my job was to make it work and teach the Air Force personnel how to operate and maintain it). After that I have lived here in the Houston area ever since.
(2) When was the last time that you saw something very large? A huge Jig Saw Puzzle Map of Texas (no picture, sorry).
Bonus Questions:
(1) What is your favorite "X" Word? Of course mine is "TeXas" but next will come "Extra". It is always nice to have an extra helping of some kinds of food, especially ice cream for me.
(2) When did you last have a far away from home and where? This January my SIL had a stroke. She lives in North Louisiana and we spent a couple of weeks there while she was in the hospital.

Houston, TeXas, has tall buildings
We are the 4th largest city in the U.S.

(C) "X" is a tough one: Our TeXas tough-sized Sunday Bible Study Class. It is labeled, "Over Age 65" and as you see most of us are. We have 168 members, 94 Women and 74 Men. We also carry 31 visitors who visited us in 2019. Class attendance runs just over 100 most Sunday mornings. Our church is the Second Baptist Church of Houston, 1463 Campus (link). Please visit us when you are in town. Also note, Mrs. Jim and I are NOT in this picture as we were making some arrangements inside the classroom, which is directly behind this wall.
(D) Reflection(s): TeXas Restroom Mirrors -- This was taken at the Men's Room at a TeXas doctor's office. It's a little bit of a Selfie too, that is my hand and camera at the right.
The Mirror looks out through the window to the backs of some commercial buildings facing the other street. The Ladies' room has no windows. Pour souls.
I rate this Rest Room as a Four out of Five possible score. It was very clean, mostly 'No Touch' equipment, but the sink's faucets are a Glaring cut, requiring hands to manipulate the water functions.

Weekend Roundup -- 20-18(b) (for letter "T") -- Reflections too
The 45th issue of Weekend Roundup for this year..

(2) A Favorite: KP's School honored Veteran relatives, Grandfather here, for a Veterans Day celebration. We had breakfast in the library, there the fifth grade choir sang to us. Then we <
The morning was finalized by a parade of the students and their guests marching through the halls with the teachers and kids lining the sides. Got lots of Hi-Fives and thumbs up. This picture was taken after the parade. Her school, of grades K-5, has over 1,000 students. The "S" badge is my admittance and permission pass.

(1) Starts with "T": Texas starts with "T". The statue of Sam Houston (our president while Texas was a Republic) is alongside Interstate 45, coming into Houston from Huntsville, Texas. It stands 77 feet tall. The 67-ft. tall (plus 10-ft. base) statue is named "A Tribute to Courage."
You can read all about this large Sam Houston monument at RoadsideAmerica.com. Jack and Linda were amazed. Long before they were leaving Texas, they too were saying, "everything is bigger in Texas."
(3) Tall: Tall women scare me. Especially when we are alone in an elevator. I generally get off as soon as I can.
