Beyonce at Houston Rodeo
Well, it's time for the Houston Rodeo again. It start's Thursday, February 27. Beyoncé is a hometown Houston girl, I predict her performance will be an early sellout
.
Did you know her voice covers five octaves and is insured for $Millions and $Millions? I remember when she was starting as a local hit with her group, Destiny's Child, in 1999.
..
ZZ Top is also a hometown group. They will put on the finale and should be an early sellout as well.
Generally every performance is a sellout eventually.

"This year's RodeoHouston lineup today received some significant additions to previously announced performers.
Beyoncé tops the list of returning favorites, hot on the heels of her success with B'Day, released last September.
RodeoHouston warhorses Reba McEntire and Brooks & Dunn will be making their 16th appearances at the event.
But no one can touch George Strait, who will be celebrating his 20th performance at RodeoHouston in 2007.
A few new faces include Sheryl Crow who ... [triumphantly returned from a bout with breast cancer] which forced her to cancel her Rodeo Houston debut in 2006.
Expect a sellout when Houston's 'tweens gather en masse to worship at the feet of the Disney-created Cheetah Girls and Hannah Montana.

Besides these entertainers, there is an honest-to-goodness rodeo. I like to go over to the livestock show as well. Four H'ers and FFA kids show first, followed by the professionals.
Last year the top steer sold for $315,000. The 16 year old owner plans to use her $85,000 cut to attend Texas A&M University, where she wants to study agricultural engineering [link].

MidWeek Blues -- Some blue at the fair
We went to the County Fair at Brenham, Texas, on September 17 of this year (2010). It was a nice fair with a very fine rodeo.Today I'm posting a few of the rodeo pictures. "Another day" I will post some pictures of the other things happening at the fair. Click on my pictures to make them larger.
From top left: a wonderful bull riding contest; one of the horseback riding exhibitions, this one being all ladies carrying plenty of American flags; and another picture of the ladies with the new red Dodge pickup supplied by the local Dodge dealer. The pickup would be put to use ferrying items in and out of the arena.
From left to right: son, Tim; from Paris, France, Corinne; Mrs. Jim, and me. Corinne was visiting the U.S. and wanted to see cowboys and bull riding at a rodeo. We hope she had a good impression of Texas and our country.
A friendly native took this one for us. When on holidays I love to get the residents or other friendly tourists to take a group shot for me.
I liked this view of the Ferris wheel appearing above the bleachers. Everyone over there in the carnival area seemed to be enjoying themselves. Midweek blues purists, please note the pretty blue florescent light emitting from the spokes of the wheel.
A rodeo is not complete without some clowns. There are three kinds of clowns. The one on the left, in uniform, has as his main duty to please the audience. He would alternate between being in the audience and down in the arena. This fellow also had running commentaries which involved the announcer.
On the left is the real 'worker clown.' This one helps in the arena by scaring the bulls away from the dismounted rider, helping herd cattle, catching runaway horses, etc. He wasn't a showoff or the likes, just steadily did his duties.
The other kind of clown is an amateur. A wannabe clown. He is present in a lot of public places making jokes and drawing attention to himself.

Trail Rides In Spring -- a popular sight in Texas
.This looked like trouble ahead. We were in Camilla, Texas, on the way to Louisiana. I was just telling Mrs. Jim that I would like some Texas trail ride pictures this spring. Really though, I wasn't ready for one to be in our lane ahead of us.

This group had come from Beaumont, Texas, and expected to end up in Houston for the Houston Rodeo and Livestock show. That is the world's largest rodeo.

Yes, and Camilla is where that little house was featured in my last May 26 blog (link). Rachel wrote a nice little story about it also.

Two Shoes Tuesday #2 / Danger! -- MidWeek Blues

What you are seeing in the picture above is the scene below me that I took while up in an antique Ferris Wheel. Our friend Alton, a fellow club member of our Montgomery Country Early Ford V-8 Club, owns this wheel and has it permanently (well, I guess he could move it if he wanted to) in place on his farm down by his 'early village' place.
Mrs. Jim and I were to get off shortly like this couple to the right is about to do when it was our turn. But it was at least a half hour before our turn came up. We were stuck near the top when the Alis Chalmers engine belt pulley failed to go around on its own power anymore to pull the big wheel around.
Alton's hired hand and fellow old car mechanic had to do some fixing in the mechanism used to engage the pulley into 'drive.'
I am thinking that there was no real danger here but it was a little scary because the old Ferris wheel would sway back and forth with the breeze.
The pictures on the left above is a full view of Alton's old Ferris wheel. He found this old wheel in Oklahoma and trailered it down to his Texas ranch. Then he proceeded to restore/rebuild it modern specifications. The Alis Chalmers engine also needed restoring but that was an easy and fun task for Alton.
The Ferris wheel is early 1900's while the engine is one from the 30's or 40's. I seem to have the number 1928 in my mind but I cannot associate it with either the engine or the wheel. (more about the wheel and our Christmas picnic party)
I took the pictures while attending Alton's annual Christmas party in 2010. We had a wonderful Christmas dinner at his early village in his restored saloon.
Also we viewed his antique cars, mostly Fords from 1932 to 1953 which were in various stages of restoration. After the dinner, a noon affair, we all took turns riding the Ferris wheel. There were no more rides that day after we all disembarked.
The picture on the upper right was taken of a modern Ferris wheel when we attended the County Fair in Brennan, Texas. We were sitting in the rodeo area watching the rodeo when I noticed this wonderful view of this wheel. We enjoyed the rodeo very much.
One of our objectives in going there was to give our French visitor, Corine, a chance to see in real time, live, a bull riding episode. Corine was not disappointed. I blogged about that back in 2010.

You may have noticed that Pocahontas is first. I remember studying about her early in grade school. Amelia Earhart is my favorite because of her exciting bravery. Someday they may find her plane in the Pacific.

Kind also starts with "K". March has been very Kind with us, coming in like a lamb. It is my Kind of Weather. Some other parts of the country and world had worse. Mrs. Jim, Daughter Karen, and BP were in Chicago earlier this week. Those people's Kind of weather is rough!!! Mrs. Jim was glad she had brought her Ear Muffs.

Note: The orange cowpuncher hat was a reminder that our Houston Rodeo, the world's largest rodeo, indoors too, was to be in progress.IT HAS BEEN CANCELED after seven of the scheduled performances due to the COVID 19 pandemic. We have had about 25 cases or suspected cases in our three county area.
As you probably know air traffic has been suspended from the U.S. to and from E.U. nations for non-citizens' in addition to our previous bans to several Asian/Oriental countries. President trump idea.
It has not been suspended to England and Ireland, they are no longer E.U. members. There was speculation as to why not. As of This Noon, our time, Coronavirus: UK live updates, 11 deaths and 798 cases reported in Britain
(B) "Keepsake" (Tom's choice): Kind of old, just a little bit younger than me. It is my Hurst Gyroscope and is pre-WW-2. It is sitting on the instruction paper which had the price, $1.00, but no Copyright which would have had a date. Gyroscopes have been around a long time so patents have all expired. A quick Google search found, "The Hurst Gyroscope 1940s toy! This is the precursor to the fidget spinner …" and was pictured as mine.
Other Keepsakes: In the back are four of my Miniature toy cars, the taxi cab, on the right, and the truck carrying the flag, are the oldest. My sister Lois gave the taxi to me and was wearing a very high priced tag, authenticated by "Antique Road Show."
In the link below I discuss it more and my real antique taxi, a 1920"s Yellow Cab. Dad ran over it with his tractor. I had called it "my Favorite' then also, in November, 2019.

Parts follow. " "K" is for the word Kangaroo. This 2013 blog post was about the kangaroos and other animals that we saw when we visited the Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary in Brighton, Tasmania (more). The entire island of Tamania, directly south of the mainland Australia, makes up the state of Tasmania, Australia (map) (Google, Tasmania)."
(D) Reflections: I took the scenic route to the mail box. It was a mile plus in the green belt Flood Control area's paths test that are laced within the houses. There was a duck swimming in the pond but it wasn't the day for her to take photos. The water seemed 'Greenish', click on the picture to enlarge and you decide about the Greenness.
Just before the mail boxes was this Kids Neighborhood Area Playground.

My Two Questions (you can answer just one if you wish).
(1) How What has been your experiences with wild animals? Most of min have been in the Zoos. Outside of the zoo, I think of the boyhood adventure when my dog, digging madly in hole near some brush, go sprayed by a Skunk.
(2) Would you please tell a little about your growing up Toys. Do you call them Antique"? Do you still have them? Are they valuable? I My favorite childhood toy was a "Dick Tracy Camera" that took real pictures on 127 film. I have several others, plus a whole log of grown up toys.
Bonus Questions: 1) what is your favorite "K" word? I think it will be Kinky today. Donno why.
(2) What comes to mind when you hear "Kangaroo"? Until the trip to Tasmania I generally thought of "Kangaroo Jokes".

MidWeek Blues -- Some blue at the fair -- No. 2
We went to the County Fair at Brenham, Texas, on September 17 of this year (2010). It was a nice fair with a very fine rodeo.Today I'm posting a few of the livestock pictures. Previously I have posted pictures and all about the rodeo "Another day" I will post some pictures of the other things happening at the fair. Click on my pictures to make them larger. These are cattle to be auctioned off. I like them all so I really have not favorites. Well, if I had to pick one it would be the fine little filly (horse) below.
This nice little filly was a year plus old. She sold for $2000. We think this was a bargain for the new owner.
Our house guest, Corinne, enjoyed petting the goat. This was in the 'petting zoo' which was enjoyed by both children and adults. For some this was their first up close encounter with farm animals.

The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo announced its 2006 concert lineup this morning. RodeoHouston performances will start on Feb. 28 and run through March 19.
Each performance begins with the grand entry, rodeo events and the calf scramble, and ends with the concert.

Friday’s Hunt v 1.11 -- "K" is for ...
1.a. I will choose KP first. KP is our youngest grandchild who lives about a half mile away since we moved. We walk with her to school, first grade when both her parents have to be at work fairly early.
KP also most always has us take her to gymnastic class because it is too early for either of the kids to take her. Then we eat at MacDonald's before we take her home. MacDonald's is close to our home also.

The second picture she did let me take. I think that she wanted me to buy the dog for her but that didn't happen.
1. b. Kick is for the Eagles song, Kick 'em when theyre up, kick 'em when they're down. The real name is Dirty Laundry and is dedicated to Rupert Murdoch (Wikipedia Link). We don't watch the Fox TV channel except for the O'Reilly Factor and our local Fox Broadcast Channel 26 for non-network news.
The choir and singers and players were dressed very nicely. We had guitars, a harmonica (mouth harp), fiddles, a banjo, and a steel guitar besides the keyboard.
3.a. Flower -- I will have a bunch of flowers. The were Valentine Flowers waiting to be sold at a local Kroger store. Some Kroger stores have tents outside, they are good and affordable place to buy plants and flowers.
Besides, a Sunday school teacher, the preacher's wife, once told our class, "Candy's dandy but liquor is quicker." I think she wished she hadn't said that, we had no discussion on that remark. But I won't ever forget it, Bless her.
3.b. Flower - a Confederate Rose
In October 2013 we visited some cousins in Louisiana. One was Dorothy who moved from Houston.One gave us this flower from her bush. She calls it a Confederate Rose. Mary took some blooms and also a couple of cuttings.
You may know more about Confederate Roses than they do. I don't think they are real roses. (Wikipedia says, "Hibiscus mutabilis, also known as the Confederate rose or the cotton rosemallow, is a plant noted for its flowers."
