Share Your World -- March 27 Week
Here are Cee’s questions for this week. I hope you’ll share your answers, too.
Does your first or middle name have any significance (or were you named after another family member)?
YES, both first and middle.
My Dad's middle name is Vernon, that is also my middle name. He did answer to Vernon and used C. Vernon for all his documents and signatures.
But no one called him either Charles, his real first name, or a suitable nickname. They mostly called him Jim. Then when I was born they named me James Vernon.
But they couldn't call me Jim as that was Dad's popular name. So I was either Jimmy or Little Jim. Dad was never Big Jim. And I was never a Vernon. My three uncles called me Jimmy all their lives and several of my friends still call me Jimmy. I'd rather be Jim which I am to most people. Hardly ever except for official things am I James. (Sorry this got drawn out and long.)
Music or silence while working?
Classic Rock. That would be a bit of the later 60's, the 70's and maybe a bit of early 80's I'd rather have TV, it is turned on most all of the time now that I don't work. I don't pay much attention to a lot of it though.
If you had a special place for your three most special possessions (not including photos, electronics, people or animals), what would they be?
By my bed.
In my study/office.
In the garage.
The Never List: What are things you know you never will do?
- I will never forgive certain persons even though I can be 'friendly' with him or her. They may have forgotten but I cannot forgive because of scars I have.
- I will NEVER eat egg plant. Probably that is because of a high school joke.
- I will NEVER get to the South Pole. I have always wanted to do that. The closest I've been is around Cape Horn and have visited the Falkland Islands.
- I will NEVER get to Antarctica or the North Pole although I've been into the Artic Circle.
- I will NEVER kick or mistreat a pet or any farm animal, no animal for that matter.
Optional Bonus question: What are you grateful for from last week, and what are you looking forward to in the week coming up?
I'm grateful for my Sunday School class. Without it our church with thousands of members (Second Baptist Church Houston) would not provide the fellowship with other members. Our class has 137 members, most of them fairly regularly attend. Our attendance averages in the 90's on Sunday mornings.
- LAST WEEK, Friday night, our Shepherd Group met at a Mexican Restaurant near the church, ten minutes from our place. We have 20 in the group, 14 came for dinner.
- In the WEEK COMING UP, we are looking forward to our seven-year-old granddaughter, KP, to have a soccer game. She plays mostly at Left Guard. That was on Saturday, on Friday night the men of our Sunday school class will have a supper and meeting at the Church. The ladies will meet Saturday morning.
- EVERY WEEK Mrs. Jim and I put together and mail out a newsletter to our Sunday school class meeting. This week I also will make an April Calendar showing the month's activities for the class.

and his wife. Our class is aged 60 and up.
I had Chile Reno dinner, besides the pepper filled with
hamburger my plate had rice, guacamole salad, charo beans,
a chicken enchilada, and all the corn chips I could eat.
I took a doggy plate home for Sunday lunch, about half of this.

Here is the little poem by Lon Woodrum of the 1940+/- era that I found about King Og. Surely you remember him: (see Note 1)
BED OF OG
While browsing through the Bible once
I ran across the queerest thing:
A Bashanite of giant height
Upon his nation’s throne was king.
His name was Og.
There is no record whether he
Was dull or smart or sour or gay.
He had a bedstead made of iron—
That’s all the Bible has to say
About this Og.
He must have used a lot of room!
They laid a tapeline on his bed;
From side to side it was six feet wide
And fifteen feet from foot to head.
Some man, this Og!
I wonder, was he cruel or kind?
A gentleman or snooty cad?
And did he have a smile or frown?
A bedstead made of iron he had!
That’s all we know.
I hope when I have lived my life
And gone the common way of man,
The folks will find I’ve left behind
Something for memory better than
Old Og’s iron bed!

Verse 11 tells all that we really know about Og, the King of Bashan. We can assume that he was a large man to fit that bed. Very likely a giant.

Abbey Road Baptist Church, London, U.K — Eight things to do in London things 03

Turn right into this intersection and you will be on London's Abbey Road of Beatles Jacket fame (link). Generally there are quite a few tourists taking pictures of each other crossing the Abbey Road street as were the Beatles in that record jacket. Driving, you might want to take another route if you are in a hurry as pedestrians have the right of way crossing in the marked crosswalks.Then Abbey Road Baptist Church (Google link) is almost another block on the right, opposite the Abbey Road Recording Studios. We visited this church again while we were in London during February and March.
On the right below the minister is presenting the church's oldest member a bouquet of roses for her birthday while the congregation is singing her the Happy Birthday song. She was in her ninety's but I didn't catch exactly how old she is. Every visit we have made this lady is in attendance.

Fruits de Mere -- MidWeek Blues -- The Jim Bunch Eats
Or Fruits of the Sea as my friend Joe, of Joe's Pizza and Pasta, calls this dish. Joe closed his Italian restaurant in New Jersey and moved here so we could enjoy delicious fruits of his Italian cooking skills.
Mrs. Jim and I shared this. I am not sure I could eaten the whole thing. I had my first on Mont-Saint-Michel (link) off the Normandy Coast of France.
It was in a quaint little restaurant carved in the mountain giving it a sort of cave-like atmosphere. Yet we could watch the pedestrians walking along on the sidewalks outside.
We have visited Mont-Saint-Michel three times, staying overnight on the island each time. Make hotel reservations early if you'd like to do that.
In this restaurant which was no exception to the general practice, patrons' dogs would come in with them to eat. The dogs are tethered on the owners' chairs and lay perfectly still until it is time to leave. Some save a scrap for their dogs.
That doesn't happen in Texas although Katrin sits perfectly still under our table while we are eating. Adi would beg through the whole meal if we let her.
This was another meal after Church eating with some from Mrs. Jim's Sunday school class. They go to a restaurant almost every Sunday.
Once and in a while they do have a pot luck lunch. We never turn down an opportunity to eat with the group whatever we do or wherever we go.

We have a house guest, a grand ...

Now this cat isn't exactly a stranger to us. We do think she is an angel, an angel couldn't be any nicer or better mannered and behaved.
We don't see her as often as we would like. She is our grand cat and we would like to have her visit us more often. Amber Adi's sister.
Amber is staying at our house for a week. Usually she lives Karen, Billy, and BP but they are on and off the road or air or just ...
Amber is living upstairs at our house, she and Katrin had a hard time getting acquainted the last time they were together. We will spend a lot of time with her this week and we are thinking she will visit some with Adi.
Here, she found a nice soft place to purr and be petted right after she got here.
I tried to catch her laying on her back, legs up. But she rolled over when she heard the camera turn on.
Throughout the Bible, the people of God were being hospitable. Peter did not even know these people but he took God at his word and invited these people in:

21 Peter went down and said to the men, "I'm the one you're looking for. Why have you come?"
22 The men replied, "We have come from Cornelius the centurion. He is a righteous and God-fearing man, who is respected by all the Jewish people. A holy angel told him to have you come to his house so that he could hear what you have to say."
23 Then Peter invited the men into the house to be his guests.

Twelve Days of Christmas -- On the third day of Christmas?

[large picture] [super sized]This is another of our Thursday (remember that foggy day?) walk pictures. Adi was serious in determining her favorite color. Others are coming.
Adi likes her profile picture pose best but I just about always ask her to smile at the camera and say cheese. I gave in for this one as it is just real nice.
The green color, Adi's for today, is the color of the ivy climbing the brick wall surrounding a future addition to Bentwater down the street a little from our house. (link)
I am not in favor of having ivy or any other plant growing up brick walls as eventually it dislodges the mortar holding the bricks together and in place.
For houses it is especially bad because it provides a perfect path for termites and wood loving ants to crawl up and in. There should always be several inches of only foundation before the home area begins.
Not only does it discourage insects from crawling up and in but also is a hedge against a few inches of water standing from a heavy rain. We had 33 inches of water inside our former home, that would have required a high foundation or stilts.
We are busy making holiday preparations here, this morning I addressed and stuffed (wrote on a few who moved away) Christmas cards for the members of my Sunday school class. In the afternoon I finished preparing for today's lesson which I will teach.
The kids and families are coming up for Christmas day so Mrs. Jim has the menu planned for the Jim Bunch Eats. It may be fine tuned as individual requests come in. They had better hurry with that because she already went into town for grocery shopping yesterday.
I also winterized our lawn sprinkler system. If we don't do that the check valve gets too cold (if we get down below freezing) and breaks the plastic flapper inside. Would you believe we can't replace the flapper by itself, we have to buy a whole new check valve.
