~~ Friday’s Hunt v.3.01 -- "A" is for ...
Friday's Hunt for the week of January 6th: 1. Starts with A;

2. Week's Favorite: We had a "friendly stranger" take our picture but I didn't find it very quickly and I'm running late tonight so I put this cute one of Mrs. Jim instead.
She is standing in a field reserved for Penguins. We were on the Johnson Farm at Volunteer Point in the Falklands. We were advised before we left to get some foot protectors for keeping our shoes clean from the Penguin manure, as their habitat is very messy, messier than a chicken house.
The Falklands visit was a part of the second half of our South American Cruise. We left Los Angeles on December 4th and left Rio de Janeiro, Brazil on January 4th, getting back to Houston on the morning of January 5th.
The cities we visited on the second half were Santiago, Chile; Punta Arenas, Chile (Google); Ushuaia, Argentina (Google)-nicknamed "the end of the World."; The Falkland Islands (Google); Montevideo, Uruguay (Google), Buenos Aires (Google); and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (Google).
The boggy ride I told of last week was of our ride out to Volunteer Point to see the Penguins. I'll more about the Penguins later ("P's" perhaps?) and maybe show more ride pictures.
1. Starts with "A": Amethyst gemstone (Googled: https://www.google.com/search?sourceid=navclient&ie=UTF-8&rlz=1T4GGHP_enUS574US574&q=amathist#q=amethyst)
The Amethyst here is the pink quartz rocks. We found these at a table vender in a park, located in Montevideo, Uruguay. Pink Amethyst is the national gemstone of Uruguay. Amethyst is also the state gemstone of South Carolina. The hollow stone is also quartz Amethyst stone. I think the vender said that all were Amethyist but I'm not sure. I am sure that I didn't buy any although I believe they weren't very expensive. Or of very high quality.
3. Beginning: This afternoon I stopped at my friendly NAPA auto parts store in Montgomery, Texas, and picked up my 2017 NAPA Classic Car Calendar. The car for January is a 1967 Pontiac GTO Convertible. You may remember these, I do. I have a collection of the NAPA calendars dating back to the second one in the 1970's.

Note: The King Penguins' little ones are Brown during their first year. Like most humans are born with blue eyes but change them to blue or green the first week or so.

(1) Starts with "B" "B" is for Bellaire, a Red 1957 Chevy Bellaire Convertible. It is the First month's picture for my 2018 NAPA Calendar. BTW, I had a very good friend who had one of these new. Both he and the Chevy Bellaire were consumed in a Gas Station Fire. Someone lit a cigarette, my friend was working at the station.
The specs: Either a 265 c.i.d. or a 283 c.i.d. engine. My flathead Hot Rodded 1952 Ford 2-Door** would outrun or keep even with all the overhead valve 1955-6-7 Chevy's

(3) New Beginning: My Chevy Bellaire is also a New Beginning as it is to be found on my NAPA Auto Parts Classic Car Calendar, New for January 2018.
As I have mentioned before, I have them from the second to this one. These NAPA Auto Parts Calendar had their beginnings in the 1970's.
** Note:
My 1952 Ford 2-door, hot rodded, had a Mercury Flathead valve V-8 engine that I built, bored and stroked, ported and relieved, with a "Street cam". It had an automatic transmission, looked stock, except for upgraded seats. We calculated it to be 297 c.i.d.
It was a very pretty green, I bought it two years old. I don't know how fast it would go but the speedometer only went to 100 and I drove it so fast you could look down into the instrument and not be able to see the needle. Those were my 'fast days'.

4.2. Lagniappe: Braunschweiger (starts with "B") Snack that I take with my Tri-glyceride Meds (take with food" directions). I buy them at our New (beginnings) Aldi's Grocery Store for $1.99 for a one pound package. My other name brand had gone up to $3.99 for eight ounces at our name brand store.
BTW, you may call this treat "liverwurst".

When can I reuse this calendar? If you look closely (click to enlarge) you will see that it is a 2006 calendar. Well this is the first year that we can use the 2006 again.
The picture is of Sorrento, Italy. The Isle of Capri is to the left, across the way. We were in Sicily for two weeks in 2006 and then another week in Sorrento.
Sorry the picture isn't real clear. Our hotel was down the street to the right from the taller buildings. It was a wonderful place to visit!

Not my favorite vehicles — MidWeek Blues
My favorite cars are generally Fords (I have three, a 1960 Tudor Deluxe, a 1974 Mustang II Ghia, and a 1998 Mustang GT Convertible) although our family car is a General Motors. And they have been since 1990.

My twin sons had Chevy Cameros while they were in high school. Their first car was a shared 1962 VW Bug with a nice fold up sun roof. It was a nice car that was my only car while I was single. Unfortunately the engine blew.
They both had good jobs with an ice cream store making them able to finance and make payments on the Cameros. Mitch had a gold 1969 Z-28 similar to the one on my calendar. Mike's was a 1968 RS painted like this one. They were both good cars and so they kept until their college years.
I do like my NAPA Calendars. I have most of them dating back to the 1970's. NAPA is a good auto parts store here in Texas. They are nation wide, you may have one in your town.
Our NAPA is better than most auto parts stores as they have a machine shop to rebore engine blocks and bearing ports as well as plane heads and grind crankshafts. They will even pull gears off your shaft if you don't have a puller.
This four wheeler belongs to our friend Don who keeps it at his ranch. Mrs. Jim's Sunday school class had a very enjoyable picnic there a couple of weeks ago.
I have never ridden a four-wheeler but I did ride a three wheeler. They are a lot of fun but living here we would have to trailer it out of the subdivsion to find a place to ride. Deed restriction prohibit their use here were we live.

Warm Heart Wednesday ~~ No. 008 ~~ A Late Find
I generally get them about the first week in November. I checked the local area NAPA Auto
Parts stores around here in the second week of December. Either these stores were all out or they had not received any for 2016.
Yesterday we went back for an appointment with Mrs. Jim's doctor. On the way, through Montgomery, I stopped at my former NAPA store and they still had some left !!! I felt so good about my 'FIND', it was like having a late Christmas present. "Heart Warming"
The pictures are of two 1955 Desota cars. My favorite is the RED ONE. You can read the specs and ownership information from the picture below.

I have a little story about this model car. Back when I was a University of Nebraska college dropout I worked at a watch factory in Lincoln, Nebraska, the Elgin National Watch factory. I knew Dad would not be happy about my withdrawal from school, so I waited to tell him until after I had a job. Plus, as expected, not long afterwards he wanted his Ford pickup, fairly new, to come home. It soon did.
While working at the Elgin factory I became friends with one of the parts inspectors, named Bill, who was driving a race car. The car was a modified stock class 1934 Ford three window coupe. I spent a lot of time learning auto mechanics while working with them on the race car. My first lesson was how to pull a transmission out of the car. A few times I drove that car and then next one to follow, a 1937 Chevy Coupe, also modified stock.
The point of my story is that Bill's parents purchase a 1955 Desoto 4-door like the blue one in my calendar. That was in the fall, the next spring both parents were killed in a car wreck. The 1955 was totaled.

~~ Friday’s Hunt v.4.07 -- "G" is for ...
Friday's Hunt for the week of August 18th: (1) Starts with "G": (2) Candy: (3) Latch
(1.a) Starts with "G": "G" is for Guy the Gorilla (1946–1978) who lived in the London Zoo from 1960. He is now a bronze gorilla casting at the London Zoo. KP was four (4) and a couple of days. (1.a) Starts with "G": "G" is for GT-350, here a Shelby Mustang GT-350 Convertible. This one is a 1969 model for the August classic car picture for my August 2017 NAPA Calendar.
The car had a 351 CID Ford Windsor engine developing 290 horsepower. That isn't super much, my 1969 Ford T-Bird Hardtop had a 429 CID engine that made 360 horsepower. It would and has run away from these Shelby GT-350's.

I have the spinner hubcaps and the blue glass Thunderbird emblem from it. That was okay as I sold it for scrap after it flooded in 1979 with four feet of water.
My 1998 Mustang GT specifications are
4.6Litter (281 CID) DOHC V8 = 305 hp @ 5500 RPM & 300 lb-ft @ 4000 RPM
It is quicker and faster than either of the cars above because it is lighter.
(2) Candy: Here we see two water bottles from the Marriott Hotel near the Capital in Washington D.C. Since they are disposable many guests take them home to reuse.
The one on the left in the picture Karen brought home for me. It is a new bottle filled with Candy Coated Reese's Peanut Chocolate blended very close in size to the M&M's that we all like.
On the right is a bottle I brought home with the Reese's when we went this January. Now is has some sitting-around leftover candies.
The newer bottles have decreased in size. They are a fill-your-own, water or candy. They may now be smaller as to be less obtrusive when carried in a pocket.
To the right is a piece of Chocolate Covered Honey Comb Candy. It has sort of a Butter Finger taste. I've cut through it so that we can see the honeycomb.
Bees didn't make this honeycomb, it is a piece of mostly sugar and honey heated to the candy stage, infused with baking soda, and then poured out on a baking sheet.
Below I have copied a recipe to make your own. We bought ours in bulk from Sprout's Grocery out of a 40 or so gallon wooden barrel.
(3) Latch: We went to Jackson, Tennessee last month, driving the loaner SUV I blogged about last week and the week before. My BIL & SIL sang a duet for the Sunday Night Service at the Methodist church. Winetta sang four additional songs after that. It was an outside affair with Barbecue and fixings, soft drinks, and homemade dessert.
Jackson is a nice smallish city, population of 67,265 by a 2012 estimate. (Wikipedia) Sunday after church and on Monday we toured the city and surrounding area. One of my favorites was the little train museum with inside and outside exhibits. The inside was the old Jackson train station but it was closed on Sunday when we visited.
In the picture above at right we were peeking into the Dining Car which was closed. I am sure it had a latch with a lock to keep people out when things are closed. We were standing between this caboose (what is that!!!) and the kitchen looking into it ahead.
Mrs. Jim is operating the manual switching levers to get a feel of what her daddy did when he worked in the railroad yards. He died when Mrs. Jim was only seven years old. (Click on the pictures to get a larger sized view.)

Chocolate Covered Honeycomb recipe
Chocolate Covered Honeycomb Candy

A flaky honey candy covered in chocolate.
Ingredients
- 1/4 cup honey
- 1/2 cup corn syrup
- 2 cups sugar
- 3 tablespoons water
- 1 tablespoon baking soda
- Chocolate Candy Coating
Instructions
- Combine honey, corn syrup, sugar and water in a deep pan on the stove. Stir together quickly and then turn the stovetop to medium high and do not stir again. Watch closely to keep from bubbling over. Cook until mixture reaches 300 degrees, about 12-13 minutes and a light amber color.
- While mixture is cooking, prepare a deep pan by lining it with parchment paper and greasing it liberally.
- When mixture is at 300 degrees or a light amber brown, remove from heat and quickly stir in 1 tablespoon of baking soda. Mixture will expand rapidly.
- Pour into prepared pan and let cool and harden for 30 minutes.
- When the candy is hard, cut into smaller pieces over a sheet of parchment paper.
- Melt chocolate in microwave according to package directions. Coat candy in chocolate and set aside on parchment paper to harden.
- Enjoy!

Yesterday — MidWeek Blues —
Yesterday was my lucky day. Three nice things happened. I will post them here in chronological order:1. I was FINALLY able to get a 2012 NAPA Calendar. Because I was driving very much after my back pain episode I missed out on them at my favorite NAPA store in Conroe.
Last Friday I went to their other store in Montgomery to see if by any chance they had some left. They did not but the nice parts counter fellow said that he would ask (someone). He made a call and said he would have me one that afternoon.
It was Monday, yesterday, before I could get in to pick it up. You will be seeing if off and on here when I like one of the cars. Past calendars I've posted are here.
2. I am through with my rehab therapy for my after surgery stuff. The physical therapist said to continue the exercises that he had taught me and to walk for 30 minutes a day.
My doctor concurred saying to walk at least 30 minutes at least five days a week. He knew that we were soon going back to London and said that I should get another pair of nice walking shoes. I showed him my fairly new ones but he said I needed a spare to use when those were drying out after getting them wet walking around on rainy days.
3. Mrs. Jim's doctor's office called her on the results of her bone density tests. Her doctor also said that she should start walking for 30 minutes a day. So now we both have each other as walking partners. Mrs. Jim is in better shape than me so she walks faster than I do. But she waits for me or walks slower, at least last night she did.

Happy New Year! -- Happy Birthday, Mrs. Jim!
Isn't that a good looking family, taken just on the spur of the moment. Karen came to get KP who had been here almost a week and obliged for a 'blog picture' of us. Left to right you see KP, Mrs. Jim, Adi, Katrin, and me (Jim). More new Baby KP pictures here.
That was taken yesterday, today is Mrs. Jim's birthday. Yes, she was a New Year's Day Baby. On that day her preacher, Dr. Herschel Hobbs*, came to bless her, pray for her, and help Mema** commit her to the Lord. Sounds like Samuel.
Happy New Year to everyone who reads this. I would love to know how many do but there isn't any way. I think there are as many relative, friends, and interested persons who read this as there are those who leave comments. I say there are 50 for this blog and 40 for the Photo and Poem Place (link). If I thought 100 I might want to brag so these are my numbers for 90.

The old 1999 calendar you have laying around can be recycled this year. It matches the one for 2010 perfectly. I save mine for just to reuse them. When I find my 1999 NAPA car calendar I will post a picture, for February I hope, of that. In the meantime this other planner 1999 calendar will do just fine. And of course my 2010 free car calendars which I aways get a few of each year.***Notes:
* Dr. Herschel Hobbs (1907-1995) was a Baptist preacher who preached in Louisiana before he came to Oklahoma to spend the most of his career. Dr. Hobbs wrote a Sunday school lesson commentary which was very useful to me. He became famous for being the author of The Baptist Faith and Message. Once when he came to Houston I was honored to shake his hand and talk briefly with him. (link)
