Winter might be coming to Texas!

. [click on the pictures to make them full screen]
.
It was you who set all the boundaries of the earth;
you made both summer and winter.
Psalms 74:17,
New International Version (NIV Bible).
.

.

That's our Savannah holly tree growing in our front yard. When the weather turns cold the berries turn red.

It was cold yesterday, down to about 33; a lot of winters we don't get colder than that. This morning I could see my breath.

.

Notes:

1. Psalm 74:16-18 follows:

16 The day is yours, and yours also the night; you established the sun and moon.
17 It was you who set all the boundaries of the earth; you made both summer and winter.
18 Remember how the enemy has mocked you, O LORD, how foolish people have reviled your name.

Fall in the Houston area -- Six Week Saturday

.
A leaf fell, is it Fall?

[large picture] [super large]

The calendar says we are a couple of months into Fall. Our trees accept that but all still have their leaves. Except this one leaf that fell off from someplace.

[large picture] [super large]

It probably was from one of the three ornamental pear trees on the left. Eventially all of the leaves will turn yellow, then fall off.

Here are the other three trees in our yard. We planted all six ten years ago when we moved here.

The next to the right is an oak tree which will stay green all winter. To the right again, the tall tree is a cypress tree which will also lose it's needles. Finally, to the right and close up is a holly tree. It will stay green all year and the green berries will turn red.

All that is to say that we still will have a couple of green trees along with the four baren ones. Our hedge is holly also so it will stay green with more red berries.

[large picture] [super large]

I haven't posted a picture of our new granddaughter, KP, for a while. KP is now three months old. She spent a couple of nights with us and will go back home with Karen this morning.

KP and I were on the back porch with the stroller. She would smile at my corny jokes but it was so hard to catch her smile. Finally I got this one. And don't worry most of the time that left eye is wide open.

[large picture] [super large]

This is Einstien again. KP likes to kick the upright to make the music play. There is a little battery operated music box strapped to the top. We have it set to be motion activated. Can Can is her favorite song.

Katrin likes to listen to the music. She would have a turn in there if we allowed her that priviledge. In the meantime, she is standing sitting guard.

I wish to thank everyone last week who came up with ideas on my running away. Where to go or views on travel for me were really appreciated. Thank you.

All is still up in the air, I might not run very far.

The view from our garage door

Go to jim's little Christmas tree farm (link) to see my Christmas tree collection.
Leave a comment on the tree(s) you like, if you like.

This is down the street to the left. Note the leaves have turned red and yellow now. Those will soon drop off, the oak, pine, and trees will stay green this winter.
.

This is our front yard to the right going/looking out. We live on a three way corner, a little to the left is the street up our 'hill'. The first picture is the dead-end street to the left going down the hill.

To notice here is our holly tree. Those berries have turned real pretty red now.

Behind the holly tree, nearer to the street are our three ornamental pear trees. Their leaves are red also and will almost cover our yard when all those leaves fall.

The fog came in from the Gulf and our Lake Conroe between taking the first picture and this one. You can see how heavy it is, just across the street. We couldn't see the first house up or across the golf course.

Doesn't Adi look sad here? Her house is all messed up royally. The painters and the carpenters have been here two weeks now, they should be finished by the end of next week.

We are changing colors of every room downstairs except the baths and my office. The den upstairs is getting paint too.
The carpenters are puting frames around the windows and doors that didn't have it in the den, adding to the crown molding there, and changing out the chair rails in the dining room and breakfast room.

[The view idea came from Cliff Morrow's Blog (link). periodically he shares his nice photos taken from a neat vantage point--example: the view from the back porch (link).]

Go to jim's little Christmas tree blog for December 21, (three entries) for more about that red leaved pear tree. Click here for link to first entry.

The Letter "X" ~~ Weekend Roundup and Reflections

The 50th issue of Weekend Roundup for this year...
(THE TWENTY-FOURTH LETTER FOR THIS SERIES)
- the Letter "X" Prompts are:
(A) Starts with the Letter "X" : (B) A Favorite;
(C) Contains the letter "X" for '"W"ater' (Tom's choice); and (D) Reflections.
_ _ _ _

(A) Starts with the Letter "X": That would be "Xmas".  Very likely this will be our Christmas Picture.  (Remember, we are on Sabbatical.)

Letter "X" in eXtreme:  an eXtreme lot of fruit.

(B) A Favorite:  Shrimp Coctail is one of my FAVORITE foods.  Fish Stew is a close runner up.  My delicious dish here was full of Shrimp, Scallop, Mussels, (Moule), Octopus,  and pieces of Fish.  Also for this meal my salad was smothered with Anchovies.

(C) Contains the letter "X":  Christmas eXpress.

(D) Reflections:  The scene is of a distant lighted highway along the coast of Muscat,  Oman.  The brightest area on the left is from a small shopping center.  You can see the WATER REFLECTIONS better from viewing a larger size.  For that click on the picture once and perhaps again for larger still.

_ _ _ _ _ _ _

My Two Questions (you can answer just one if you'd like):

1. What will your Christmas decorations be?    I They will be miserly as we are doing Sabatically things.  So far we have bells and holly on the door. We might add outside reindeer and an artificial tree inside.

2. How do you feel about Shrimp?   Like I said above, they are one of my favorite foods.

Bonus Questions:

1. What is your favorite "X" word?  "Expert", i like to be the best.

2.  What has your experience been with trsins?    My first train ride was when I was inducted into the army.  Since then we have used them some while traveling in Europe.

It's Here! — Six Word Saturday —

s..
my Six Words:
My New Camera Finally Got Here!!!

Here are some of the first couple of day's pictures with the camera.  Mrs. Jim has honors with the first picture taken, and now posted to my blog.  I missed having a camera while this one was coming but finally it came.  Remember (link scroll down to the Two Quetions part) that I washed my old one because I didn't check front pants pockets when I did my clothes washing.

The new camera is another Sony pocket camera, this time a Sony DSC-WX50, a 2012 model.  Being a 2012 model means reduced price.  It was listed at $199.99 but I doubt many were sold at that price.  My price was $107.95 from an Amazon.com associate supplier, Roberts LP.  Not being from Amazon itself eliminated $6.80. T e x a s . sales tax.

So far I am fairly satisfied with the camera's operation.  I don't like the 'in camera' battery charging set up but then we already have here two Sony external battery chargers from other cameras.  The packaging was the worst I have ever had come through the mail, there was NO INSIDE PACKING to stop the camera box from rattling around inside a larger box. And the twilight picture had a lot of round light spots, I don't know where they came from.

Mrs. Jim and Katrin here are scrounging in the refrigerator for us some leftovers for lunch.  Mrs. Jim did well with these left over from our Tuesday evening domino group dinner.

Next comes a back yard picture followed by two side yard pictures.  The golf course is dried grass mostly yet due to a late heavy frost.

You can click on any picture to make it larger.

The side yard pictures below are of the back porch and the greenery on the property line.  The right hand picture shows the red bud tree pretty good.

Here is a front yard picture.  The ornamental pear trees in front are starting to bloom.

The holly tree in front here has its berries starting to fade.  They soon will drop and the birds will pick them up for us.

Below is a before and after picture of Katrin.  She had a trip to the groomer today.  I can get three haircuts for the price of one for Katrin.  But then mine last three times longer so we come out about even.

She gets pretty shaggy between her cuttings.  Mrs Jim will trim some in between times, especially around her eyes.  While Katrin was getting her cut Mrs. Jim and I played a round of golf.   Neither of us were up to our usual so so game as each of us for differing reasons had not played for a couple of weeks.

Here are a couple of trial pictures.  At left is my twilight shot of the moon.  The Moon is not any of the round items as it was a sliver moon.  It is the small dot, second from the top of the slanting upward four above and right of the tree.  My drowned camera would not take pictures of the moon.

At left is a trial of the zoom function.  I was sitting beside Mrs. Jim, top picture here, and the chair was thirty feet away in the living room.  I think it did pretty good.  This camera zooms five times with the lens and five more digitally after the lens is fully extended.

The green on Katrin's head is a St. Patrick's Day
ribbon that the groomers put on her.

Happy St. Patrick's Day to you!
(be sure to wear green tomorrow
so that you don't get pinched.)

My Operation # 01 — Six Word Saturday —

It is nice to be home

I know that this may sound corny but today and for the next few days I will be writing about my recent surgery.

I had a total left knee joint replacement. It all started here in this office where my knee doctor had moved to since the last time he worked me over. That was either my fall in Ireland back in 2007 or an earlier double arthroscopic repair of my torn left knee meniscus.

He had moved to this office of the HC Bone and Joint Clinic of Houston. It was a newly opened Woodland branch from their established Houston Medical Center main office.

I am home now with Mrs. Jim, KP, Karen and Billy, and Adi, Katrin, and Amber.

Home health has been coming for rehab every day this week. An RN has also been coming out daily to change my dressing. That part will stop now as Holly, Dr. Price's Pa, removed my staples this Thursday. Dr. Eric Price is my orthopedic surgeon and sports medicine doctor.

There were some interesting situations, some good an some not so good, associated here with the surgery. These and my more recent health findings I will tell about soon here on my blog.

Next will probably be about my "BOUT WITH Diarrhea."

Weekend Letter "F" (Feet, Flowers, Fords, Followed, Free Cat ...)

The 5th issue of Weekend Roundup for this year...
the Letter "F". Prompts are:
(A) Starts with "F"; (B) A Favorite; (C) Free; and (D) Reflection(s).

(A) Starts with "F": "Foot" starts with "F".  [Then and Now Pictures]
My feet have had a great life.  Chronology:
1.  Born with two toes on RIGHT foot Webbed - Doctor told Mom it's okay but he would cut them apart if she wished
2.  Broken metatarsal in LEFT foot during hazing in college, Pershing Rifles fraternity, University of Nebraska, due to "March Foot."
3.  Army was drafting men with TWO flat feet
4.  1980 -- Walked all over the Holly Land, Athens, Israel, Jordan, Egypt, and some Mediterranean Islands
5.  Dropped a brick on LEFT large big toe, lost nail but it grew back
6.  ________ (cannot remember the incident but my Podiatrist said he would rebuild my LEFT foot if I wanted it done. (Don't mess with my feet)
7.  2010 -- Neighbor ran over my right foot -- I hollered and she stopped on top of it.
Miscellaneous:
 - They win the "Ugly Feet" contests that I run here.  I'd have another if enough people want to enter theirs.
 - They have walked in all 50 States and on Six Continents.
 - They rebel at walking bare footed.
 - Younger daughter Karen and I made a pact, "Our feet will always smell like strawberries no matter what."

(B) A Favorite:  This is another of my Toys, a 1937 Ford Deluxe Two Door Convertible cast iron 1:18 scale model.

My school car would have been a 1937 Ford, Tudor model.  It was very pretty, previlouslyi owned by a LOL (Little Old Lady) and had very low mileage.  But Dad decided that with the mechanical brakes, Ford had not yet adopted hydrolic brakes, the car would not be safe for me. (note: the Ford on the right is a 1936)

So Dad trading my car in bought himself a new Ford pickup and I drove it to school for my last two years.  Previously I had ridden a horse to a country two-room high school three miles from our house.

Favorite Flowers also starts with "F".  These are winter flowers in front of our house.  Notice the grass has stayed green this winter also.  Kind of scraggly but green.  For some reasons we like a part of global warming.

(C) Free:  This one, Free Cat Food Coupon, came in the Mail a couple of days ago.  We will use it and give the food to our neighbor.  No the Cat isn't free, you can have anything at Alice's Restaurant except Alice.

"Free" pets don't stay Free long.  My advice.  This is Adi, our Beagle dog, in her retirement photo (read about it here).  Adi and I and Mrs. Jim were Pet Therapy Dog Teams.  Adi retired in 2012 and died in 2013.  She was the nicest dog ever and we were buddy buddies.

(Adi came free to us, Karen paid about $250 for her as a registered Beagle but before a year she could no longer have a Beagle dog in her apartment.  Dogs yes, but not a Beagle because some of them Howl.  Discrimination!!!)

(D) Reflection(s):  "Followed"

"Followed" by Motor Cycle Gang

Letter "Z" -- -- Weekend Roundup and Reflections/People on the Street

MERRY CHRISTMAS!!! and
HAPPY NEW YEAR!!

For the 26th letter time, The Week's Prompts are Christmas, A Favorite, and "Red and Green".  The letter not asked for would be "Z".
 _ _ _ _

Christmas:  Our Christmas Tree lighted.  It's a seven-foot store bought artificial.  Also Red and Green.

At the foot of the tree is a manger scene, a Fisher Price "toy".  It represents the purpose of tomorrow's holiday, celebrating the human birth of Jesus Christ.  Christians celebrate it on December 25 regardless of the actual birth date.  (Click here for viewing other nativity word posts)

Hence the song that we sang over and over in my country schools, grades one through ten:
Away in a Manger
.
Away in a manger
No crib for a bed
The little Lord Jesus
Laid down His sweet head
(Full words of song at the end below)

Away in a Manger - Kid's Version w/ Lyrics (listen)

A Favorite:  My Holly Tree -- Again, also Red and Green.

My Hard Time Canna Lilly
The rabbits ate all the tender
leaves after we planted it.

Red and Green:  We hope the hibiscus other plants didn't freeze again this winter

 - - - -

A Lagniappe:  The last rose of Autumn but more are on the way.

Another Lagniappe:  my favorite "Z" Words are
1. Zipper;
2. Zigzag; and
3. Zoo (not necessarily in that order; plus there may be other favorites that I have not mentioned.)

I am showing you a fence owned by my friend who has a "little ranch" near Telluride in Colorado.

Today I like best "zig-zag" as a zig-zag fence appeals to the hidden rocket scientist nature in me.

They can be freestanding without the use of buried fence posts.  A section can be removed and put back for access/entrance without damage to the fence.  Lastly on my short list is that their rustic looking appearance appeals to me.

- This fence belonged to my friend and neighbor before we moved to Katy.  It was on his Colorado ranch and was there before he acquired the property.
He was a retired major oil company CEO who started in the Chemistry lab of the company when he graduated with his degree, a PhD in Chemistry.

A Reflection or a Street Photo Capture
:   during a little bit of Christmas shopping I had to use this restaurant.  The store had two, both "any gender" per the sign.

It's been a long time since I've rated a relief facility but this on would have been a Zero except that scale goes from one to five. I RATE THIS ONE A ONE.

Another Lagniappe:  Below, is the last full posting on this blog for the year, the following post is from 15 years ago.  I started it in December 2005 but the picture and text below are from January 2006, it was Adi's, our beagle dog's, first of many on this blog.  She was also on some of my other blogs here and there.

Incidentally, this blog has 2,257 posts, 884 draft posts, for a total of 3,140 writings.  It has 18,690 comments with 710,899 hits.  Quite a few families and friends read it and tell me about their viewing but don't leave comments.

"Saturday, January 07, 2006

it's for Adi this time

This is Adi, our therapy dog

She specializes in reading with children

and visiting assisted living residents"

Adi died September 17, 2012 (read my tribute to her here)

Adi was born September 1, 1996.  Read Adi's blog post here.

Away in a manger
Away in a manger
No crib for a bed
The little Lord Jesus
Laid down His sweet head
The stars in the bright sky
Looked down where He lay
The little Lord Jesus
Asleep on the hay
The cattle are lowing
The Baby awakes
But little Lord Jesus
No crying He makes
I love You, Lord Jesus
Look down from the sky
And stay by my side
Until morning is nigh
Be near me, Lord Jesus
I ask You to stay
Close by me forever
And love me I pray
Bless all the dear children
In Your tender care
And fit us for heaven
To live with You there
