"He commands even the winds and the water, and they obey him."

Jesus Calms the Storm

22 One day Jesus said to his disciples, "Let's go over to the other side of the lake." So they got into a boat and set out. 23 As they sailed, he fell asleep. A squall came down on the lake, so that the boat was being swamped, and they were in great danger.
24 The disciples went and woke him, saying, "Master, Master, we're going to drown!"

He got up and rebuked the wind and the raging waters; the storm subsided, and all was calm. 25 "Where is your faith?" he asked his disciples.
In fear and amazement they asked one another, "Who is this? He commands even the winds and the water, and they obey him." (Luke 8:22-28 NIV)

And they're off! Running the race set before them!

Derby Day # 134 at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky. One and a half miles.

Did your horse win the Kentucky Derby? I hope so, especially if you had a wager on him. And if he finished but didn't win at least he/she set the race set before him/her.

Are you running a good race? Do you run the race set before you?

Paul (??) had these words for his fellow Christians:
[large picture] [super sized]

1 Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us.
2 Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.
3 Consider him who endured such opposition from sinful men, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.

Hebrews 12:1-3 (NIV)

And in a race, only one gets the prize!

So then, in Paul's words about running the race to his fellow Christians at Corinth:

24 Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize.
25 Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last; but we do it to get a crown that will last forever.

Post for Saturday - Sunday - Monday (maybe)

Saturday:

[large picture] [super size]

Yesterday (Saturday) I was on the computer a lot. First I had to finish my Sunday school lesson for tomorrow. It is all about Jacob and his trouble getting his wife, Rachel. Did you know that he had to marry her sister, Leah, first. After working for seven years for their uncle thinking it was to earn Rachel. So then he had to work seven more years to earn Rachel.

Did you have a problem with "their uncle?" Yes, that is correct, Jacob and his wives were cousins. Read all about it in Genesis 29-31,

Mrs. Jim and our friend visiting from Maine were shopping. While they were out, I shopped too! On eBay. I spent a lot more than Mrs. Jim did.

[large picture] [super size]

And Adi? She was my helper again. Both of us would rather have been down off the balcony and hitting our golf ball along with this fellow.

Before Mrs. Jim left, we read the paper. A couple of great items caught my attention. First was the 'joke of the day,' "He had a photographic memory that was never developed."

Second item,
this cartoon (click) showing the artist's conception of blogging before the Al Gore had invented the Internet.

Sunday:

How about a church sign?

This sign reminded me of the little fellow who had loaves and fishes in his basket. It had been a long day, Jesus had been preaching longer than Billy Graham does that day. There was a huge crowd and everyone had gotten really hungry, but the only person with foresight to bring supper was this kid with his basket of loaves and fishes.

Jesus said to the kid, "Don't be greedy, pass your basket around!" That reminded me of the Methodist coffee house in Huntsville, Alabamah, I visited one day (in my hippy days a long time ago).

We all sat on the floor, around the room leaning on the walls. After a bit someone broke out a bottle of wine and they began passing them around till they were empty.

Those three bottles lasted us all night, somehow they never became empty. And there were twelve full bottles left over when we were ready to leave! Too bad we didn't have some pizza with anchovies in the basket also. That would have been good passed around going with the wine.

Oh well, just read about how Jesus did his thing to get enough bread and fish for the huge crowd, starting with just that one little basket. It's in
Matthew 14:13-18

Monday, maybe:

I would like to go to Orange, Texas. There is a new garden over there sitting on 252 Texas-sized acres, called the Shangri Law Botanical Gardens. I see I can't do that, because it is open Tuesday through Sunday. Unless they are having a dress rehearsal Monday. That is a long way to drive to find out I couldn't get in. I'd better pay bills and clean up around here, and play a little golf in the afternoon.

Well, I'm off to bed now. Be sure to set your clock ahead an hour or you may be late for church tomorrow. It sure seems early to go to bed but we have set our clocks ahead early!

Jesus Calms the Storm
23 Then he got into the boat and his disciples followed him. 24Without warning, a furious storm came up on the lake, so that the waves swept over the boat. But Jesus was sleeping. 25The disciples went and woke him, saying, "Lord, save us! We're going to drown!"
26 He replied, "You of little faith, why are you so afraid?" Then he got up and rebuked the winds and the waves, and it was completely calm.
27 The men were amazed and asked, "What kind of man is this? Even the winds and the waves obey him!"

Peter's Sermon

Mr. Peter -- Fisherman who left his nets and followed Jesus everywhere He went while on earth [Bible, Books of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John]
Rev. Peter -- Preacher of God's Message [Bible, Books of Acts and 1 and 2 Peter]
St. Peter -- Keeper of the Pearly Gates [
Matthew 16:18-20]

I first heard this sermon idea in a little church in Warrenton, Oregon, preached by a Methodist preacher there. We were visiting my Grandmother Corkill in the summer of 1984. Our visiting party consisted of Mom and Dad, Mrs. Jim, Karen, and me.

I don't remember that preacher's name. He started with the ordinary cantankerous fisherman, Peter, who was Jesus while he was alive here on earth everywhere he went.

Then after Jesus died and went to Heaven, Peter became the leader of the early church as recorded in the Bible book of Acts.

Peter's second sermon, after the healing of the cripple at the Beautiful Gate (Acts 3:1-10), included these elements of God's plan of salvation for the early church people and for all of us in Acts 3:13-26: (see The Cross Proclaimed)

- of humanity's guilt (3:13-15, 19, 26),
- God's wrath (3:23),
- the death of Christ (3:15),
- the prediction of His sufferings by the prophets (3:18, 24),
- His resurrection (3:15, 26),
- the necessity of repentance for salvation (3:19),
- and the fact that the forgiveness of sins was now being offered through Christ (3:19).

Some would include baptism which contained in Peter's first sermon
(
Acts 2:14-41) but is not included in his second sermon (Acts 2:38).

The greatest promise of all is made by the Heavenly Father: “For whoever calls upon the name of the Lord shall be saved” (
Rom. 10:13).

Rainbows, the sign of the covenant between God and the earth

..................................[large picture] [super sized]
I have set my rainbow in the clouds, and it will be the sign of the covenant between me and the earth

Genesis 9:8-13 [New King James (link to Chapter 9)]:
8 Then God said to Noah and to his sons with him: 9 "I now establish my covenant with you and with your descendants after you 10 and with every living creature that was with you—the birds, the livestock and all the wild animals, all those that came out of the ark with you—every living creature on earth. 11 I establish my covenant with you: Never again will all life be cut off by the waters of a flood; never again will there be a flood to destroy the earth."
12 And God said, "This is the sign of the covenant I am making between me and you and every living creature with you, a covenant for all generations to come:
13 I have set my rainbow in the clouds, and it will be the sign of the covenant between me and the earth.

Who may ascend into the hill of the LORD?

Psalm 24:3-5 (NKV, link):
3 Who may ascend into the hill of the LORD? Or who may stand in His holy place?
4 He who has clean hands and a pure heart, Who has not lifted up his soul to an idol, Nor sworn deceitfully.
5 He shall receive blessing from the LORD, And righteousness from the God of his salvation.

Adi Can . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Well, what IS she doing?

Since we couldn't understand Adi's dog talk even IF she could preach, I have found a couple of pretty good messages for today (see note below).

First is by friend, Jamie Dawn, she tells of what would be a hard time for many at their community and church this week. Her sermon is entitled, "Easy Faith, Hard Faith, & Mega Hard Faith." (link)

Second is by my friend, Dale. Dale went with us to Guatemala and was inspired by an experience his passport. His message is "My Passport," where he tells of his Passport to Heaven, without which he couldn't go. (link)

And this Sunday, the 18th, is Raggedy's birthday! (link)

.

.

Note, if we could understand Adi, this would be her message:

Psalm 100

A psalm. For giving thanks.

1 Shout for joy to the LORD, all the earth.
2 Worship the LORD with gladness;
come before him with joyful songs.

3 Know that the LORD is God.
It is he who made us, (and not we ourselves) we are his;
we are his people, the sheep of his pasture.

4 Enter his gates with thanksgiving
and his courts with praise;
give thanks to him and praise his name.

5 For the LORD is good and his love endures forever;
his faithfulness continues through all generations.

Met this friend ...

He had used drugs for many years. Now he has been clean for nineteen years.

This is his message:

He said he could not have straightened up without God's help

And he said he knows he will always be an addict, just a straightened up addict now.

A senior citizen said to his eighty-year old buddy:
"So I hear you're getting married?"
"Yep!"
"Do I know her?"
"Nope!"
"This woman, is she good looking?"
"Not really."
"Is she a good cook?"
"Naw, she can't cook too well."
"Does she have lots of money?"
"Nope! Poor as a church mouse."
"Well, then, is she good at making love?"
"I don't know."
"Why in the world do you want to marry her then?"
"Because she can still drive!"

"God Loves You" -- Sunday, August 19, 2007

"God Loves You"

In the quiet, love is reaching.
It’s yours to hold,
Be still and know that
Even when you’re lost and lonely,
And hope is gone, you’re not alone.

Far beyond the understanding,
There’s a hand that leads,
If you believe.

Through the darkness, see the light.
Remember God loves you.

The road ahead is long and winding.
With eyes of faith, you’ll find the way, yeah.
And when the journey leaves you weary,
You can rest in the comfort of heaven’s arms -
Sweet loving arms.

And peace will follow.
Peace be with you always,
As you go.
For now you know that...

Through the darkness, there’s a light.
Remember God loves you.

When you open up your heart,
His love will meet you where you are.
He will always be a part of everything you do.
He is here to set you free,
And give you all the strength you need
To carry on, to carry on.

Through the darkness, see the light.
Remember God loves you. (remember, remember)
Remember God loves you.
