Letter "H" -- Weekend Roundup and Reflections
(2) What is your favorite Word starting with "H"? Mine today will be "Happy". I've used it a lot here today. An old saying, "If the wife isn't happy then nobody is."
(3) Anything else you were reminded of here that you would like to tell about?

Weekend Roundup -- 07-18 (for letter "G")
Favorite: After reviewing KP at museum. We once more fell in love with KP at that visit. Here she is sizing up a lamb at the petting yard. Today she won't pet a dog, let alone pull a sheep's ear.
Something Green: Had hoped to find some green at the zoo. But since I didn't how about this green grasshopper that I found in Tennessee.
Any idea of what this grasshopper eats?
Langnape: The GMC logo (link). I wasn't familiar with the GMC until 1954. That was when we blew an engine in our 1934 Ford Coupe modified stock racing car. Our sponsor decided not to spend anymore big money on our car so we punted.
We did lay our hand on a 1936, could have been 1937, Chevy Coupe and put a GMC engine in it. Our race rules limit on engines was 300 cubic inches (ci) so we put in a GMC 302 engine, bored and stroked to about 375 ci. A GMC 270 head fit right on so we never were subject to a tear down of the engine.
The car wasn't nearly as fast around the corners as our little Ford. This was because of the side location of the intake manifold, at the side of the engine, and the effect of gravity (a "G" word) pulling on the fuel. Electric fuel pumps did not remedy this, it was also the fuel mainly in the carburetor but clinging to the outside while the engine was inside (Ford carburetors were located on top, in the center of the engine).
So it always stayed in the "B" Feature final race and sometimes would win. But it never made, or could make the "A" Feature.
Day at the Zoo with an eighteen-month-old grandchild in a nutshell:.

We fed the giraffes then gazed at them for a bit
We rode the merry-go-round
We ate a nice lunch from Grandma's bag
We took pictures a zillion times
The elephants were to KP the most amazing. They were huge!

Mrs. Jim, KP, and I visited the Houston Zoo on November 1, 2011. KP, here peeking around and through the bridge, was one and a half at the time and really enjoyed seeing the animals and fishes.

We had a happy Sunday -- The Jim Bunch eats again, then we went to the City of Houston Herman Park for a while
Son Tim e-mailed the Jim Bunch last week to have a get-together at Niko Niko's Greek Restaurant. Megan was coming home from Austin. She is graduating from the University of Texas this May with a Masters Degree in Accounting.
That is pretty good, she did it all in five years with extremely good grades. And never once did she change her major. [Her Grandpa Jim changed his three times at the University of Nebraska and three times at the University of Houston, just in getting his bachelor degree.]
At the end here, are Megan and her boy friend, James. We all like James.
Here we have the Jim Bunch, mostly candid this time. Sorry guy, if you weren't looking at the camera.
Missing were grandkids, Tim and Renee (live out of town) and BP (she had other places to be), then kids Karen, Billy, Mitch, Carmen, and Mike. A couple of kids were working, three were playing golf.

After lunch, Mrs. Jim and I drove over to the 445-acre (1.80 km²) Herman Park (link 01)(link 02).
Everyone is proud of the new Herman Park Train. We haven't ridden this one but sure did ride the other one, a lot. Kids and grandkids all liked it when they were young. Mrs. Jim and BP rode that old one just this winter.

The Herman Park has a really nice Japanese Garden too! We didn't get to stay long there because it closes at 5:00 PM until summer time. (link)

The bridge and pond above remind me of Monet's works at Giverny. Mrs. Jim and I want to go there before we get too old for things like that.

That's General/President Sam Houston at the end of the reflection pool. [large picture] [super size]
We didn't rent a paddle boat but you do that.

There is the Museum of Natural Science, the Cockrell Butterfly Center (link), a planetarium, and a very nice IMAX Theatre if you want to stay cool in the air conditioning.[large picture] [super size]
Walking to the Museum, we saw this orange flowering fruit tree in bloom (in the center of the picture).[large picture] [super size]
The steps here are in front of the Museum. They lead to a huge sun dial where there are always a bunch of kids playing something similar to hopscotch among the numbers.
What we didn't see were the 4500 animal Houston Zoo (at Herman Park)(you gotta see this link to the zoo and all other attractions at Herman Park, the Miller Outdoor Theatre, and the 18-hole Herman Park Golf Course (click here for a free round of golf).
All three of these are Houston Texas size, that means real big(!!). If you haven't been there, please visit the Wikipedia article, you will be impressed. Come visit us and I promise we can go there!

Tom's Choice, "Painting": The original Painting for this Print was given to President Richard Nixon on National Prayer Day, early 1970's. Amazon has one signed by President Nixon for $199, ours is signed and numbered.
A Lagniappe (2): Panning for Gold? We did in Alaska, got a little to take home. But like "all the fish he had got was in his mother's pail," all the gold we got was purchased in the gift shop.
