Letter "C" -- Weekend Roundup and Reflections

The third issue this week of my 2021 WEEKEND ROUNDUP postings and ... (THE THIRD LETTER FOR THIS SERIES) - the Letter "C" Prompts are: (A) Starts with the Letter "C"; (B) "Colorful" (Tom's Choice); (C) A Favorite; (D) Reflections; and (E) A Lagniappe.
_ _ _ _

The Cat In The Window

[click on picture for full screen photo]
(from an earlier post, April 6, 2007 -
(A) Starts with the Letter "C":   Cat begins with the letter "C".  This is Amber, our cat sat kitty, we sat with Amber while she and family were in London five years with her work.

.

(B) "Colorful" (Tom's Choice):   This is our Colorfully decorated golf cart for a 4th of July parade with Mrs. Jim, Adi, and our new college graduate.  She received her Bachelor and Master degrees in Math, and SHE HAS A JOB, using her specialty,  "Statistics".   She taught college Statistics as a professors assistant her junior and senior years and then also as a graduate student teacher.  (Parades)

(C) A Favorite:  As soon as our Boarded Cat came, she decided that our Beagle Dog had a much nicer bed than she.  Adi wouldn't give in to her though, so Adi and Amber shared Adi's bed for her stay's duration (4 1/2 years until she died of old age, 18 years).
(For more Amber blog appearances on my blog, please click here.)

(D) Reflections:  Now this sister Alley Cat decided to sit out the rain from her perch here, looking down a side street from her dry archway.  She wasn't wild at all as the Alley Cat looked in my top picture.

Instead she is a friendly cat who makes her fur shiny and her stomach round by begging food off the street and from the people eating at the outside cafes down the street from our hotel in Dubrovnik, Croatia (picture 1) (picture2). (original post with sister's cat).

(E) A Lagniappe:  Above, a part of our pretty downtown scene and today's forecast courtesy of Houston NBC Channel 2.
On the right this morning's view from our bedroom windows. (Note, window needs a cleaning.)

Bonus Questions:

(1)   Tell a bit about your experience or feelings about parades?   When our grandkids were still kids they loved to go with us to a parade.  Sometimes we were in the parade, several times as adults, once driving the Mustang top down to carry a retired marine.  Also unusual I took the younger grandson to an Art Car Parade back when the Art Car Parade had just coming into existence.  Most times it was the Houston Thanksgiving parade or the local 4th of July parade.

(2) What is your favorite Word starting with  "C"?   Mine today will be "Car" , I have had many in my life, list here to click.  I also have about 40 toy cars, most scale model cast iron cars.

(3) Anything else you were reminded of here that you  would like to tell about?

Wednesday (cat sleeping in picture below):

Let sleeping cats lay -- Tomorrow they may have a busy day

Sarah Palin's favorite cartoon: (go look)
Oooops, looks like her cartoon quit just like she did!

Today: October 1st is World Vegetarian Day (save a pig's life)

Yesterday: Consensus is to keep the little red desk

Picture of the day:

.

This is Karen's cat, Amber. It was sleeping on her bed, just minding it's own business.

Karen is a little mischievous sometimes, this time she put the cover on thinking Amber would wake up and get up. That didn't happen, Amber wiggled and settled in for the finish of her nap.

Amber was rescued from Karen's friend. The cat was used to being a house cat but for some reason that I can't remember Amber was required to become an outside cat.

Neither the friend nor Karen wanted that so Karen has now has Amber. Amber is back to being a house cat. That cat is really spoiled. We tried to unspoil her while we kept her for a couple of weeks. (link)

I did teach her to come when I called and to sleep in her own bed at night. Her bed was right beside Adi's bed, both were right beside our bed.

The cat in this YouTube video is NOT AMBER. This cat seems to be much younger than Amber who is about 16 years old now.

Feline Friday -- Alley Cat, a Cat of the Night

.

I think I startled  Alley Cat with my camera.  She is another Dubrovnik, Croatia, street cat.  One of many.

Last week I posted the Dubrovnik cat who lives in the airport terminal (link).  This one was out on the streets at night, trying to decide what to do.

She could stay out in the rain and stroll the almost deserted 'Main Street' of the old town city center.  The old town is walled and no motorized vehicles are allowed inside.

That makes for a lot of walking as the city area is quite large.  We did walk all around the city on the old wall.  The wall was built to protect the residents and businesses from unwanted guests.

Now this sister Alley Cat decided to sit out the rain from her perch here, looking down a side street from her dry archway.  She wasn't wild at all as the Alley Cat looked in my top picture.

Instead she is a friendly cat who makes her fur shiny and her stomach round by begging food off the street and from the people eating at the outside cafes down the street from our hotel (picture 1) (picture2).

Where did we spend the night?  We had a nice Rick Steves recommended hotel, the Villa Ragusa(veview),  just inside the wall.  Our hotel had five rooms, if you decide to stay make reservations early and ask for the top room called "The Suite."  The picture on the left below is Karen's and KP's room.  All the essential were there, including the ensuite bathroom

Oh yes, like the hotel reviewer said, the owner, Pero, did pick us from the airport and bring us back three days later.  On the way he told of his city, of his family, and gave us a lot of tips on how to make the most of our short visit.  And we nibbled on some of his mother's dried figs with a sampling of local beverages during the rest of his indoctrination at the hotel.

The view of the rest of the city below is beautiful from The Suite.  The picture on the right is the view from our room.  Mostly we look at the 'house' across the street.  But if we hung our head out and looked down, we could see the street below and a lot of orange red roofs around the town.  Click on the picture for a better look.

A 'Six Word Saturday' threesome

my Six Words(three sets today) :
Just about depleted my bulb stash

In the U.S. we have declared these items off limits.  It started last year with 100 watt incandescent bulbs and now we have added 75's, 60,s, and some smaller wattages.  I stocked up good on 75's last year but already am running low on 60's.  Oh well, I'll just smuggle some in from Mexico next fall when I come back from a golfing holiday.  I had to replace two of these 75's yesterday.

- - - - - -

My other stash, stamps, doing better

While I was adding to my "Forever" first class U.S. stamps I ran across these Harry Potter special issues at our P.O.  I got two, one for me and another for a white elephant Christmas gift next year.  Our postage has gone up three cents this year.  One cent increase is permanent and two cents are "temporary" until the U.S. Post Office has eliminated it deficit.

This cat reminds me of Farrah

This cat almost always greets me when I pay our storage monthly rent.  She is very a very friendly "outside cat."  Our Farrah started as an inside cat but when still a kitten she wouldn't train to stay off (she climbed) Mrs. Jim's sheers she very quickly became an "outside cat."

She didn't seem to mind that and hung around our back yard and the little flower garden (one rose plus) beside the garage.  She died in her sleep at a ripe age, asleep in the garden under a bush.

Karen named her Farrah Fawcett Minou (French cat names link) after the American actress Fawcett lady (Farrah Fawcett Googled here ) because of her long pretty hair.  I found her in a basket in front of the Nassau Bay grocery store near my work at the JSC NASA Space Center.  A group of kids were having fun, sitting there giving away a litter of their kittens that day.

Old Buildings on Our Farm - - - Mom's Cat House - - - Dad's Pig Shed - - - Mom's Chicken House

Link to all the "Old Buildings on Our Farm"
Mom's cat house
My mom always had a lot of half-way stray cats. A few would let us pet them or come to the milking barn for a fresh teat treat. She had this special cat house at the edge of the grove. The cats would get fed out there and at our back door. None ever got shots or the like. They seemed to be pretty tough though, most lived to run off or get killed by a wild animal or the neighboring Toms.
.
[click on pictures for full size]

The old pig shed .

At one time this pig shed of Dad's was in the corral. Now the corral is cultivated to become an excellent corn field.

The small door on the left got mainly used by the pigs, but Dad and I went in many a time to help a pig out of some trouble, or to mark their ears so we could tell them from the neighbors if they got mingled.

Dad usually raised about 120 hogs from pigs. He would pick ten to fourteen to become mother pigs and another cycle would begin.

Those others went to the slaughter house. We generally butchered a couple for family eating. Remember, the Jim Bunch eats good.

. Original farm house,
it was a chicken house
ever since I new (70+ years)

Mom raised the laying hens and handled the egg marketing. Again we raised from babies, chicks this time. She always got unsexed chicks. Most of the roosters would get sold for fryers, we would eat about sixty. That is one for each Sunday and a few more for company or the threshing crew.

She would wash every egg with vinegar. Like me, she was a night owl and would start this task around midnight. A lot of times Lois and Dad would have had several hours of sleep before Mom and I went to bed.

Notes:

1. On our farm, the cattle, cows, hogs, and chickens ate the grain and hay grown on the farm. The oat straw was used for bedding. Most times there would be more profit, not counting family labor, from raising and marketing the animals, eggs, and cream.

2. All of the farm buildings were kept in good paint. The cat house and hen house were red, the hog house was black. There is still some of that paint showing after twenty-five years of non-use.

3. Unsexed chickens meant buying a mixture of male and female chicks. The mixture generally was around fifty-fifty. It figures.

Things in a Row / Two Questions

.

For Pat's meme, Thursday's Things in a Row, this week's entry will be my two Lego buildings. The Lego store was wonderful. I didn't dare take pictures inside but this one out of the two buildings in the display window I considered 'fair game' so I shot them.

- - - - - -
.

.
My Thursday Two Questions for Self Sagacity follow:

1. How would you describe your cat's personality?
.

Our cat, Amber (link), is nineteen years old so she likes to sleep in the sunshine. She is loving and even at her age, very playful..

The cat above isn't our cat.  She was playing near the playground when we took KP there to swing. .

.

2. What is your experience with Lego blocks?
.you
No experience except for a little playing with my cousin's Legos. I always wanted some Lego blocks but Santa never brought me any.

Bonus Question: What would be your choice for an "M" word if you posted one this week.
.
Check my previous post (link) for my "M" word, Meow.  It was about the Grey Cat above.
...
For last weeks' bonus question my answer was a farce, trying to get some reactions. It is not true in any way. I said, "I think the government should subsidize the circus industry. Better circuses would help employment, ..

Letter "F" -- Friday's Weekend Roundup 11 and Reflections and-or Street/Candid Captures

 - Tom's this Week's Prompts: Starts with "F." A Favorite. "F"resh.
 - James' request, "Reflections and/or Street Photos/Candid Captures."
     _ _ _ _

Starts with "F":    Ford starts with "F", this is the last Ford that I have bought. I still have it, a 1998 Ford Mustang GT Convertible.   It was my retirement present to myself, in 2001.  Also it has reached 25 years of age this year so in Texas it is now classified as a Classic.

I have owned 15 Ford branded cars plus my 1950 Mercury, which was a Ford product.  Here is a list of the cars which I have owned, click here to read of the 35 cars that I have owned (a 1940 Chevy Tudor is missing--it had been wrecked, I paid $50 for it and was in the process of fixing it back up when I got drafted.  I gave it to my landlord's son to finish the job.)

I worked for Ford Aerospace in New Hampshire and at NASA Houston for 19 years (first three in the Elgin Watch Factory, five in the U.S. Army) before I quit and switched careers to something less stressful--teaching at San Jacinto College in Pasadena, Texas.

The Cat In The Window

Posted by Picasa [click on picture for full screen photo]
A FavoriteFeline is a fancy word for Cat.  Amber stayed with us at our house for her last four years of life while our daughter was working in London.  This is my favorite Feline picture.  I posted it as my favorite before on January 6 of this year.  Amber is in all these blogs, the "most posted feline", click here.

["Dutch", New cat in the family

Newest Cat in the Family:  Dutch is the newest feline in the neighborhood, adopted as a rescue, by our older daughter.  He knows his owner is headed out for a work assignment and is hoping she will not notice him here, hoping to catch a ride and go with his owner.

Right, my "Next to Favorite Feline '"Cat in the Window'" post

Below is the second feral feline post, the first was on here or another blog, I couldn't find her when I looked.

Tom's choice, "Fresh":   Fresh bananas are nice on cereal.  These are not fresh, the skins are not yellow but rather a very dark brown.  And inside the fruit is off color and mushy.  When my wife and I were married I was almost horrified at first when she would have cereal for supper.  But she has won me over there, I like it for a light and healthy supper meal.  In the picture there are two other cereals, raisin bran and granola which are covered by what you see

Reflections and/or Street Photos/Candid Captures:  Three guys in a boat out in the Florida EvergladesFishing?  Alligator hunting?

A LagniappeFinish is a good "F" word.  Mrs. Jim Finished her physical therapy sessions, now she'll add to these on strengthening her back.

Thematic Photographic 208 - Grey / MidWeek Blues / My Alphabe-Thursday — "M" —

.
d
The Tiger Grey Cat
.
Tiger Grey ran the land
like the proverbial sailor
he had a 'friend' in every port
.
He never missed a meal
Tiger Grey became big and fat
More ways than one he was Fat Cat
.
To keep his peace of mind
Tiger Grey moved to the pet house
neighbors liked his way with the mouse
.
He cleaned up Lego town
retired they all gave him his due
that's Mayor Tiger Grey to you
.
- - - - - -

"M" is for Meow, the wonderful sound of a cat.  This one is a sweetheart that I discovered at the children's playground while outing with our three-year-old- granddaughter at the park.

Cats can only speak in Meow language that humans must learn if one is to have a cat.  If spoken urgently the cat may hurt or be hungry or it might not be able to find the new location where its litter box has been moved.

Spoken with a gentle purr, it likes you or what you are doing.  Better rub its tummy some more or pet it if you aren't doing that right now.  Also mind the purring while its asking in sweet begging-toned Meow words, "please let me sit on your lap."

Danny's Cat -- Feline Friday

.

Watch Cat

This my BIL's cat who lives in Tennessee.  Danny doesn't have
any dogs and his cats aren't used to having a dog around.

Of course both Katrin and Adi were wanting to be with us.
I took this shot while we and the dogs were watching TV.

The cat was watching us.

A Random Five post [015] — Feline Friday — Venice to Athens via the Black Sea [001 London to Venice]

.
My Five for Today:.....
[and the cats turned out ......
to be dogs for today] ......

One:  This is my unoficial profile picture for the duration of this series of posts.  Mr. Tin Man will remain but "Jim with a sign and a dog at the Varlaam Monastery, Meteora, Greece" should appear on this series. [Mr. Tim Man

The series will be of our Pacific Princess cruise from Venice, Italy, to Athens, Greece, via the Black Sea.

Two:  Say "Hello to the sleeping dog and KP."  We are riding the Gatwick Express Train from London to the Gatwick Airport where we will catch our plane to Venice.  Both of these little folk needed a nap.

We spent the night at the Sofitel Gatwick Hotel so we could be ready for our early morning flight.  Our room was very nice as we got upgraded to be across the hall from Karen and KP's room.  She is a Premium member which helped us a lot.

Three:  We boarded our ship about noon but it wasn't to depart until after nine.   The Pacific Princess is a Princess 'small ship.'  I think it was to hold 685 passengers and we were pretty well full.

Our room was eighth from the front in the middle row of balcony rooms,of the Port Side of the ship.   Six are showing here on the Starboard Side.

After we ate lunch on ship we took a water taxi over to the Old Venice Downtown.  All four of us had been there before so we mostly walked around.  Our other time was in 1980, Karen and KP were there a year ago.
.
.

Four:  KP was chasing birds again.  In the lower left picture you can see one flying ahead of her.  I don't see her in the right picture but she didn't get lost.

[Click on any picture to make it larger.  Use your "Back" button to return to the blog.]

Five:  Our Sail-Away time was 9:30.  By then we had eaten supper and were ready to 'party.'

We sailed through the old part of Venice where we had been earlier in the afternoon.  It was very pretty all lighted up for the night.

And after leaving the channel we had to check out the sun deck chairs.  They fit very nicely.

Next we were off to Split, Croatia.

I couldn't find a cat in Venice so
this is "Store Window Cat from Split."  Next week I will post
three other poses of Store Window Cat from Split.
I put her here now to keep me honest with Feline Friday
[click on her for a larger view].
